How to Unlock a Chromebook Bootloader—and Check Whether Your Model Supports It

“Unlocking” a Chromebook can mean Developer Mode or a separate firmware change. Check your exact model’s support and risks before proceeding.

On a Chromebook, “unlocking the bootloader” can mean two different things: enabling Developer Mode, or enabling alternative booting or replacing read-only firmware to run another operating system. Developer Mode is not a full firmware unlock. Check your exact model and board before choosing a procedure: support, key sequences, and firmware protections vary by device.

First, decide what you want to do

If you want developer access to ChromeOS, you may mean Developer Mode. It relaxes verified boot and provides access to a root shell, but it does not by itself replace the Chromebook’s firmware or guarantee that another operating system can boot.

If your goal is to boot an alternative payload, use legacy or alternative boot support, or replace read-only firmware, those are separate capabilities. A Chromebook may support Developer Mode without supporting the firmware change or boot method you want.

Check support for your exact Chromebook

  1. Identify the complete model name and, if possible, its board or code name. Do not rely on a product family name or assume that a similar-looking model has the same support.

    • Intel Celeron N4120: 4 Cores & Threads, 1.1GHz Base Clock, Up to 2.6GHz Boost Clock, 4MB Cache, Intel UHD Graphics 600. The perfect combination of performance, power consumption, and value helps your device handle multitasking smoothly and reliably with four processing cores to divide up the work.
  2. Open the ChromiumOS Project’s Developer Information for ChromeOS Devices index and find the entry matching your device.

  3. In that entry, check the capability you actually need: Developer Mode instructions, USB or legacy boot, alternative bootloader support, full read-only firmware replacement, and any write-protection notes.

  4. Follow the device-specific documentation for the procedure. For example, an official Samsung ARM Chromebook entry explicitly says legacy BIOS mode is not supported; support for another Samsung model cannot be inferred from it.

There is no universal Chromebook key sequence or firmware-unlock procedure. The index and the matching device entry are the right starting points; an example setup guide is not a procedure for every model.

Enable Developer Mode, if that is your goal

Back up local files first. Moving into or out of Developer Mode wipes the stateful partition, removing user accounts and associated information stored there. Developer Mode also weakens some ChromeOS security protections by making verified boot less restrictive. The ChromiumOS Project warns: “Modifications you make to the system are not supported by Google, may cause hardware, software or security issues and may void warranty.”

  1. Check the matching device entry for the correct startup instructions. Modern keyboard Chromebooks use startup key presses; tablets use a different control sequence. Do not guess the combination from another model.

  2. Use the device-specific instructions to enter Developer Mode. If the Chromebook is managed by an enterprise or school, policy may block the change; contact the administrator rather than trying to bypass management.

  3. Allow the transition to complete and follow the on-screen prompts. The device may restart and display a warning screen at startup while Developer Mode is enabled.

    • Fast WiFi and Bluetooth, Integrated Webcam
    • Chrome OS, AC Charger Included, Pastel Silver

To return to normal mode, use the option on the startup warning screen. This transition also wipes local user data. If you modified the root filesystem, restoring normal mode may require recovery rather than simply switching modes.

Developer Mode is not the same as disabling firmware write protection

Developer Mode alone does not inherently require disabling firmware write protection. Some devices support alternative bootloader use—sometimes called legacy BIOS or RW_LEGACY—without disabling write protection. Replacing the full read-only firmware is a different, more invasive operation, and availability depends on the model.

Chromebook write protection can be implemented in different ways, including a physical switch, a write-protect screw, or protection controlled by the Cr50 security chip. Check the exact device documentation before opening the machine or changing hardware. Do not remove a screw or disconnect a battery based on instructions for a different Chromebook.

Check the additional risk before full firmware replacement

For Chromebooks launched in or after 2023, read-only firmware verification can affect full firmware replacement. The ChromiumOS Project’s guide to unlocking read-only firmware on 2023-and-newer devices says the feature was enabled through a remote update in ChromeOS M122. It warns that removing write protection and replacing read-only firmware can leave a Chromebook unable to boot, break security guarantees, and may void the warranty.

This warning concerns full firmware replacement. It is not a blanket prerequisite for enabling Developer Mode, and it does not establish that every Chromebook launched in or after 2023 supports replacement.

Prepare a recovery path before risky firmware changes

Before attempting firmware work, prepare recovery media using the official ChromeOS recovery instructions for your device. Recovery storage can be a removable USB drive or SD card. Recovery media is a contingency, not a bootloader-unlock tool: it is not required just to enable Developer Mode and does not unlock firmware.

Compare the capabilities that matter

When deciding whether a particular Chromebook can meet your goal, check each capability separately in its official device entry:

A yes for one item does not imply a yes for the others. If the exact device entry does not document the capability you need, do not assume it is available from instructions for a related model.
