The startup message “This Driver can’t release to failure” is most often generated by the GIGABYTE App Center or another GIGABYTE motherboard utility loading with Windows 10. It usually indicates an outdated, mismatched or conflicting utility package rather than a Windows stop-code failure.
Identify your exact motherboard, install the package intended for that model, and restart. If the warning remains, remove GIGABYTE App Center and related utilities. When Windows refuses to uninstall one of them, Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter can repair damaged uninstall information.

What “This Driver Can’t Release to Failure” means
This wording commonly appears immediately after Windows 10 starts. In the documented cases, the message is connected to the GIGABYTE App Center and the supporting GIGABYTE motherboard-utility stack. App Center loads components during startup, and Windows displays the warning when one of those components cannot initialize or cannot match the installed motherboard software.

It also does not identify a specific Windows system driver. The practical question is which GIGABYTE package is installed, whether it belongs to the motherboard in the computer, and whether an older utility is being loaded alongside newer software.

Before changing software, identify the motherboard and installed utilities
GIGABYTE distributes different App Center functions and applications for different motherboard models. Installing a package for a similar-looking board can leave the same error in place or create new conflicts, so record the exact model first.
Find the model in Windows 10
- Press
Windows+R, typemsinfo32, and pressEnter. - In System Information, note BaseBoard Manufacturer, BaseBoard Product, and, if shown, the board revision. You can also record System Model as a cross-check.
- Write the model exactly, including suffixes, numbers and revision letters. Do not shorten it to a similar series name.
Check the firmware screen or board label
If System Information is incomplete, restart and open the UEFI/BIOS setup using the key shown by the computer during startup. The main information page normally identifies the board. A physical model label printed on the motherboard is another useful confirmation; shut the computer down and disconnect power before opening the case.
Inventory GIGABYTE software
Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features and search for GIGABYTE. Also check Control Panel > Programs and Features, because older desktop installers may appear there instead of in the modern Settings list. Record whether you see GIGABYTE App Center, GIGABYTE Control Center, or other GIGABYTE utilities. This inventory determines whether an update or a clean removal is the safer path.

Fix 1: Install the package for the exact motherboard model
Use GIGABYTE’s official support and download area, select the motherboard model you recorded, and choose the Windows 10 package listed for that board. The available App Center applications vary by model, so do not use a download intended for another board in the same product family.
- Open the support page for the exact motherboard model and revision.
- Select the Windows 10 operating-system option offered for that model. If the page separates 32-bit and 64-bit packages, select the edition that matches your installation.
- Download the current App Center package, or GIGABYTE Control Center when the board’s page supports it.
- Close other installers and hardware-tuning utilities, then run the downloaded installer as an administrator.
- Accept the requested restart. Test the next startup before installing additional GIGABYTE applications.
GIGABYTE Control Center’s Update Center can check BIOS, firmware, drivers and software on supported systems, and the published compatibility is Windows 10 and Windows 11. It is not offered as a universal replacement for every older board, so follow the package choices on your model’s page rather than assuming that GCC applies to all GIGABYTE hardware.
Fix 2: Move from older GIGABYTE software to Control Center correctly
Some products support both older GIGABYTE software and GIGABYTE Control Center. GIGABYTE advises uninstalling the previous software before installing GCC to prevent unexpected errors. Leaving both generations installed can cause duplicate startup components or incompatible services.

- In Settings > Apps > Apps & features or Control Panel > Programs and Features, select the older GIGABYTE software.
- Choose Uninstall and complete the wizard. Remove the older App Center and its associated GIGABYTE components that you no longer need.
- Restart Windows even if the uninstaller does not request it.
- Return to the exact motherboard support page and install GIGABYTE Control Center only if that model lists it as supported.
- Restart again and check whether the startup message has disappeared.
Do not remove a BIOS update or firmware package merely because the warning mentions a driver. The immediate target is the Windows utility that launches at startup. Keep the motherboard model and the name of each package visible while deciding what to remove.
Fix 3: Uninstall App Center and related utilities
If installing the correct package does not help, a complete removal is the next documented solution. This is appropriate when you do not use GIGABYTE’s tuning, monitoring or update interface, or when the installed package is clearly for a different board.
- Open Settings > Apps > Apps & features.
- Select GIGABYTE App Center and choose Uninstall. If Windows opens a classic Programs and Features window, select the same entry there.
- Uninstall other GIGABYTE utilities that were installed with App Center or that depend on the old package. Remove only software you recognize; leave unrelated motherboard, audio or graphics drivers alone.
- Restart Windows after the final uninstall completes.
- Use the computer normally through another restart. If the message no longer appears, the removed utility was the startup source.
Removing App Center does not remove Windows itself or erase personal files. It does mean that any features delivered through that utility—such as its update interface or model-specific controls—will no longer be available until you install a compatible replacement.

Fix 4: Use Microsoft’s troubleshooter when uninstall is blocked
A failed uninstall can leave corrupted registry keys or incomplete uninstall data. In Windows 10, Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter is designed for desktop programs that cannot be installed, updated or completely removed.
- Download the Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter from Microsoft’s support site and run it.
- When asked what problem you are experiencing, choose Uninstalling.
- Select the GIGABYTE App Center or related entry from the list. If it is not listed, use the option to provide the product code when the troubleshooter offers one.
- Allow the tool to repair the uninstall information and registry data it identifies.
- Restart Windows, then check Apps & features or Programs and Features to confirm that the entry is gone.
The troubleshooter repairs the removal records that block the normal uninstaller; it does not install a replacement GIGABYTE package. If you still need a motherboard utility, install the current model-specific package only after the old entry has been removed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFix 5: Confirm which startup item is producing the warning
When the popup continues after an apparent uninstall, verify that another GIGABYTE component was not left behind.

- Press
Ctrl+Shift+Escto open Task Manager. - Select Startup or Startup apps and look for entries whose publisher or name identifies GIGABYTE.
- Note the entry names before changing anything. Disable one GIGABYTE startup item, restart, and observe whether the message changes.
- If the warning disappears, leave that obsolete item disabled and remove its parent application through Apps & features or Programs and Features. Re-enable it only if you reinstall a current package that requires it.
Use this as a diagnostic, not as a substitute for uninstalling damaged software. Disabling every startup item at once makes it harder to identify the responsible component and can also disable utilities you still use.

| What you find | Best next step | Why |
|---|---|---|
| The motherboard model is known, and the support page lists a current App Center package. | Install that exact package, then restart. | Model-specific applications and functions differ across boards. |
| The board supports GIGABYTE Control Center and older GIGABYTE software is installed. | Uninstall the older software first, restart, then install GCC. | GIGABYTE recommends removing previous software to avoid unexpected errors. |
| You do not need GIGABYTE’s Windows utility, or updating did not stop the warning. | Uninstall App Center and related GIGABYTE utilities, then restart. | Removing the startup utility eliminates the component that is generating the message. |
| The GIGABYTE entry will not uninstall or update. | Run Microsoft’s Program Install and Uninstall troubleshooter in Uninstalling mode. | It addresses corrupted registry keys and incomplete uninstall data. |
| No GIGABYTE entry is visible, but a GIGABYTE startup item remains. | Use Task Manager’s Startup list to identify the leftover item, then remove its parent program. | A partial uninstall can leave a startup component behind. |
What not to do
- Do not install a driver or utility solely because its name contains your motherboard series; verify the complete model and revision.
- Do not keep an older App Center installation alongside GCC when the product supports GCC and GIGABYTE recommends removing the previous software.
- Do not repeatedly reinstall the same package without restarting and checking whether the warning has changed.
- Do not delete random files from Windows’ system folders or edit registry keys manually when Microsoft’s uninstall troubleshooter can repair the recorded uninstall data.
- Do not assume that a successful BIOS update will remove a Windows startup utility error; firmware and desktop utilities are separate components.
Optional automated driver maintenance
If you want a shortcut after trying the vendor steps, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide driver backup, restore and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8 and 7 and offers a two-day free trial without a credit card before a subscription; results vary, and no updater repairs every startup error.
When the message should be considered resolved
Restart Windows at least twice after the final change. A successful fix means the warning no longer appears and the GIGABYTE utility you kept—if any—opens normally. If the message returns, repeat the model check and inspect the installed GIGABYTE entries rather than mixing packages from different motherboard pages. There is no published success percentage or controlled test showing that one method fixes every system, so the correct choice depends on model compatibility, whether you still need the utility, and whether Windows’ uninstall data is damaged.
