Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallOutdated Drivers Are Slowing You Down
One free scan finds every outdated or missing driver and matches the right update for your exact hardware.Free scan · exact hardware matchThe “Synaptics device not found” message means Windows or the Synaptics installer cannot match an active touchpad to the driver package. The touchpad may be hidden, disabled at the software level, missing its driver, or paired with a package for a different laptop model or Windows build. In many cases you can restore it with Windows Update, Device Manager, and the exact package supplied by your laptop manufacturer.
Follow the sequence below in order. It starts with Microsoft’s recommended update path, then checks whether Windows can see the device, reinstalls the driver when necessary, and finally moves to model-specific manufacturer support.

What “Synaptics device not found” actually means
Synaptics touchpad software is not a universal driver that works on every laptop. The installer expects to find compatible touchpad hardware and an operating-system package that matches it. If that match is missing, it reports that no device was found instead of completing installation.

A missing entry does not prove that the physical touchpad has failed: Windows can retain a device record while the device or its driver is inactive, and that record may only appear when hidden devices are displayed.

Why a generic Synaptics installer fails
The package does not match the laptop
Touchpad packages are tied to hardware and operating-system details. A package intended for one laptop family can fail on another, even if both machines use Synaptics hardware. The Microsoft Update Catalog, for example, identifies Synaptics SMBus TouchPad packages for Windows 10 and later with a defined system architecture. That specificity is why a package must match the Windows version, architecture, and exact computer model.
Windows has no active device to match
If the touchpad is hidden, disconnected from the driver stack, or otherwise inactive, an installer has nothing to identify. In that situation, repeatedly launching the same generic installer will not make the hardware appear; first restore visibility or obtain the correct manufacturer package.
The product class is different
Synaptics software covers more than one class of touchpad product. The company’s TouchPad Software Q&A distinguishes product classes and explains that not every class is affected by every software issue. Treat the laptop manufacturer’s package as the authority for your model instead of forcing an arbitrary Synaptics download.

Prepare before changing the driver
Use a temporary mouse if needed
If the built-in touchpad is unusable, connect an external USB mouse. A basic wired mouse is sufficient to navigate Settings, Device Manager, and the manufacturer’s support site while you repair the touchpad.
Identify the exact computer
Record the laptop manufacturer, full model designation, and the Windows edition and version shown in Settings > System > About. Keep this information available when selecting an OEM driver. Do not substitute a nearby model number or a package intended for a different Windows release.
Step-by-step fix sequence
1. Install available Windows updates
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update. On some Windows editions this is under Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
- Select Check for updates and install all available updates.
- Restart when Windows requests it, then test the touchpad.
Microsoft recommends Windows Update as the normal way to update touchpad drivers. It can deliver a compatible driver without requiring you to identify a package manually. If Windows Update reports that the system is current but the touchpad is still absent, continue with Device Manager.

2. Check the normal Device Manager locations
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Human Interface Devices.
- Expand Mice and other pointing devices.
- Look for Synaptics, HID-compliant touchpad, or another entry that clearly represents the touchpad.
If you find a touchpad entry, note whether it has a warning icon. A warning mark indicates that Windows has identified a problem with the device or its driver; open the device’s Properties window and read the status shown on the General tab before proceeding.
3. Reveal hidden devices
- In Device Manager, open the View menu.
- Select Show hidden devices.
- Check Human Interface Devices and Mice and other pointing devices again.
A faded touchpad entry means Windows has retained information about the device but does not currently see it as active. Hidden status explains why an installer can say “device not found” even though a touchpad record exists. Do not delete every faded item indiscriminately; work only with the entry that corresponds to the touchpad.
4. Update the existing touchpad entry
- Right-click the Synaptics or touchpad entry and select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Allow Windows to search for and install a compatible driver.
- Restart the computer and test the touchpad.
If Windows says the best driver is already installed but the touchpad remains unavailable, that result only means Windows did not find a newer matching package through this search. Continue to the reinstall step rather than installing an unrelated package.

5. Uninstall and reinstall the device
- In Device Manager, right-click the touchpad entry.
- Select Uninstall device and confirm.
- Restart Windows.
- After the restart, run Windows Update again and check Device Manager for the touchpad.
Microsoft documents reinstalling the touchpad as a way to force a fresh driver download from Windows Update. The device may briefly disappear while Windows rebuilds its driver record. If it returns without a warning icon, test left-click, right-click, scrolling, and multi-touch gestures that your laptop normally supports.
6. Install the laptop manufacturer’s package
- Open the support page for the laptop manufacturer.
- Search using the exact model or service identifier you recorded earlier.
- Choose the package listed for your installed Windows version and system architecture.
- Download the Synaptics or Precision Touchpad package supplied for that model.
- Close other programs, run the installer, and restart when it finishes.
The manufacturer’s package is the correct next step when a generic Synaptics installer cannot identify the device. OEM packages can include model-specific hardware identifiers and dependencies that a broadly labeled Synaptics package lacks. If the support page offers several touchpad packages, use the one whose model and Windows requirements exactly match your system rather than choosing the newest-looking file by date alone.
7. Recheck visibility after the OEM install
- Open Device Manager again.
- Use View > Show hidden devices so that inactive records are not overlooked.
- Confirm that the touchpad appears under one of the two expected categories.
- Open Properties and verify that Windows reports the device is working normally.
- Test the touchpad in several applications, including scrolling and both mouse buttons.
If the installer still says “no device found” but the OEM driver is installed, do not keep layering generic Synaptics packages over it. Record the exact error text, the device name shown in Device Manager, and whether the entry is normal or faded; those details are useful when contacting support.

8. Contact the laptop manufacturer when the device remains absent
Microsoft’s escalation guidance is to contact the computer manufacturer when updating or reinstalling the touchpad does not help. Use that route when the correct OEM package has been installed and restarted but the touchpad is still missing from both normal and hidden Device Manager views. The manufacturer can identify the proper package for the model and determine whether service is required.

| Approach | Driver source | What you should see | Best use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Windows Update | Microsoft’s update service | Windows offers or installs a compatible touchpad driver | First step for most systems |
| Device Manager update | Windows driver search | An existing touchpad entry is updated in place | When the device is visible |
| Uninstall and restart | Windows rebuilds the device and can download a fresh driver | The entry returns after reboot, ideally without a warning icon | When an existing driver is damaged or misregistered |
| OEM package | Laptop manufacturer’s model-specific download | The installer recognizes the exact computer and completes | When a generic Synaptics package reports no device |
| Manufacturer support | Model-specific service and hardware guidance | Support identifies the correct package or service path | When the touchpad remains absent after the correct package and restart |
Common situations and what to do
“I cannot see Synaptics anywhere”
Check both Device Manager categories, enable Show hidden devices, and run Windows Update. The device may be listed as HID-compliant rather than Synaptics. If no touchpad-related entry appears after those checks, use the exact OEM package and then contact the manufacturer if it remains absent.
“The installer worked on another laptop but not mine”
That is a compatibility clue, not evidence that your Windows installation is damaged. Packages can be limited by model, Windows release, architecture, and product class. Replace the generic download with the package listed for your own laptop.
“The touchpad appears faded in Device Manager”
A faded entry is a retained but inactive record. It confirms that Windows has seen a touchpad device, but not that the driver is currently active. Update or uninstall that specific entry, restart, and then let Windows Update reinstall it.
“Windows says the driver is current”
Use the uninstall-and-restart procedure, then check Windows Update again. If that does not restore the touchpad, install the exact manufacturer package. A “best driver already installed” message does not validate a generic package for your model.
What not to do
- Do not repeatedly force-install a package for another laptop model.
- Do not assume that the word “Synaptics” must appear in Device Manager; HID-compliant touchpad is also a valid listing.
- Do not remove unrelated hidden devices while trying to repair the touchpad.
- Do not skip the restart after uninstalling or installing a driver; Windows uses the restart to rebuild the device association.
- Do not treat continued absence after the exact OEM package as proof of a particular hardware fault. At that point, provide the manufacturer with the model, Windows version, Device Manager status, and installer message.
When the problem is resolved
The repair is complete when the touchpad appears in Device Manager without a warning state, the Synaptics or touchpad installer no longer reports that no device was found, and normal pointer movement, clicking, and scrolling work after a restart. Keep the model-specific package information in your records so that a future Windows reinstall can use the same compatible source.
