If Windows 10 shows no playback devices, it usually cannot detect, load, or expose the audio hardware and its driver. A wrong or muted output, a disabled or hidden device, a failed driver, or unavailable internal hardware can produce the same symptom. Work through the checks below in order: select the correct output, reveal disabled devices, inspect Device Manager, repair the driver, run Microsoft’s audio troubleshooter, and only then consider a USB audio adapter or hardware support.
What “no playback devices” means
Playback devices are the outputs Windows can use for sound: built-in speakers, a headphone jack, a monitor connected by HDMI, a Bluetooth output, or a USB audio device. The list in Settings > System > Sound is not a complete inventory of every physical component in the computer; it shows outputs that Windows currently detects, has loaded, and is willing to expose.

A missing list therefore does not automatically prove that the speakers have failed. Microsoft explains that Windows may not detect an audio output when the required driver is missing, outdated, disabled, or not loading correctly. The output can also be present but disabled, disconnected, muted, or not selected as the active device.
- Wrong output: Windows is sending sound to another speaker, a monitor, HDMI, Bluetooth, or USB device.
- Muted output: The selected device or the system volume is muted.
- Disabled or hidden output: The device exists but is not shown in the normal Playback list.
- Driver problem: The audio device is absent, disabled, or not loading correctly in Device Manager.
- Hardware availability: The internal audio device is not being detected even after software repair.
Start with output selection in Settings
Choose the intended speaker or headphone output
- Open Start > Settings > System > Sound.
- Under Output, open the device list and select the speakers, headphones, monitor, HDMI device, or other output you actually want to use.
- Confirm that the volume is not muted, then play a test sound.
Disconnecting a monitor, docking station, Bluetooth headset, or USB audio device can change which output Windows prefers. If more than one device is listed, test each relevant choice rather than assuming the first one is correct. Microsoft identifies a wrong output selection or mute as common reasons for this symptom.

Reveal disabled and disconnected devices in the classic Playback tab
Open Sound Control Panel
- From the Sound settings page, open Sound Control Panel. This opens the classic sound window rather than the newer Settings page.
- Select the Playback tab.
- Right-click an empty area of the device list.
- Enable Show Disabled Devices and Show Disconnected Devices.
Enable the device and make it default
If your speakers, headphones, monitor, or HDMI output now appears, right-click it and choose Enable when that option is available. Right-click it again and select Set Default, then apply the change and test audio. Microsoft’s supported procedure specifically uses the Playback tab and Set Default for this situation.
If the expected output is still absent after both display options are enabled, continue to Device Manager. At this point the issue is more likely to involve detection or the driver than a simple selection error.
Inspect the audio device in Device Manager
Confirm whether Windows detects the hardware
- Open Device Manager from the Start menu search.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers.
- Look for the computer’s sound card, onboard audio device, USB audio device, or another listed audio controller.
- Confirm that the device is enabled, then restart the computer.
This check separates a hidden or disabled output from a device that Windows cannot currently identify. A listed and enabled device gives you a driver-repair path. An empty category, or a device that never appears, points toward missing detection, an unavailable driver package, or a hardware-specific failure.

Show hidden devices when appropriate
In Device Manager, open View > Show hidden devices. A previously connected audio device may appear only after hidden entries are shown. If it is listed, use the available enable or driver options, then restart Windows and check the Playback tab again.
Repair the audio driver
Let Windows search automatically
- In Device Manager, right-click the audio device under Sound, video and game controllers.
- Choose the option to update the driver.
- Select the option that lets Windows search automatically for a driver.
- When the process finishes, restart the PC and check Settings > System > Sound and the classic Playback tab.
This method is appropriate when the device is visible but its driver is outdated or not loading. It cannot repair a device that Windows does not detect at all.
Install the manufacturer’s Windows 10 package
If automatic detection does not restore the output, download the Windows 10 audio driver from the manufacturer of the PC, motherboard, or sound card. Use the exact model and Windows 10 edition shown for your computer; an unrelated package may not match the audio controller. Install the package according to the manufacturer’s instructions, restart, and repeat the Settings and Playback-tab checks.

Manufacturer packages are especially important when the audio device depends on a model-specific driver rather than a generic Windows package. Driver availability increasingly depends on the manufacturer because Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. Windows 10 continues to run, but it no longer receives free software updates, technical assistance, or security fixes from Microsoft.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRun the built-in Windows 10 audio troubleshooter
Microsoft recommends starting with the automated Audio troubleshooter in the Get Help app on Windows 10.
- Open the Get Help app from Start.
- Search for the audio or sound troubleshooter and start the automated diagnostic.
- Follow its prompts, allowing it to inspect the output and attempt the suggested repairs.
- When it finishes, test the output in Settings and in an application that normally plays sound.
The troubleshooter can identify configuration and driver-related conditions and attempt a fix. It does not guarantee recovery when the hardware is absent or has failed, so continue with the manufacturer’s support process if no device returns.

- Balanced audio sound with depth - 2 Watts Peak/ 1.2 Watts RMS power produces immersive and crystal clear sound.
- Simple and quick USB connection. Just plug the speakers into your computer USB-A port. An orange LED stays lit when your speakers are on. Disconnect the USB-A cable to power off.
- Easy controls. You can easily control the volume or mute on the front of the right speaker to get great audio experience.
- They are slim, lightweight and easy to move around so you can accommodate your setup and get perfect sound wherever you are.
- Your long lasting product set with a solid build quality.
Disable enhancements and sound effects
Audio effects can interfere with playback on some devices. If the output appears but produces no sound or fails during testing:
- Open the classic Sound Control Panel and select the Playback tab.
- Right-click the affected device and choose Properties.
- Open the enhancements or sound-effects controls.
- Disable all enhancements or effects, apply the change, and test playback again.
If disabling effects restores sound, leave them off while you confirm that normal playback is stable. You can test individual effects later, but re-enabling a problematic effect can bring the symptom back.
Use a USB audio adapter as an external fallback
If the internal speakers or sound card never reappear, a USB audio adapter or USB sound card can provide a separate output. This is a physical workaround rather than a repair of the internal device.

- USB-powered (5V) speakers plug directly into your computer for portable convenience
- Turn the speakers on and adjust the volume using one simple control (located on the front of the speakers); volume control includes On/Standby
- Simple plug-and-play setup (no drivers needed); can be used with headphones via the 3.5mm jack connector
- Frequency range of 103 Hz - 20 KHz; 2.2 watts of total RMS power (1.1 watts per speaker)
- Measures 2.76 by 3.55 by 5.3 inches (LxWxH); weighs approximately 1.4 pounds;
- Choose an adapter that explicitly supports Windows 10.
- Connect it directly to the PC and allow Windows to detect it.
- Return to Settings > System > Sound and select the USB output.
- If it is not listed, check Device Manager for the USB audio device and install the adapter’s device-specific driver when required.
Microsoft’s USB-audio documentation notes that both the Windows USB driver and a device-specific driver can affect whether playback works. Compatibility should therefore be checked before purchase, particularly for older Windows 10 systems.
Choose the next step from what Windows shows
| What you see | Most likely situation | Best next action |
|---|---|---|
| Output appears in Settings but is muted or another output is selected | Wrong selection or mute | Select the intended output and unmute it. |
| Device appears only after showing disabled or disconnected devices | Output is present but not active | Enable it and choose Set Default. |
| Audio device is listed in Device Manager | Windows detects the hardware | Update the driver automatically, restart, and test. |
| Device is listed but automatic update changes nothing | Generic or damaged driver is insufficient | Install the exact Windows 10 package from the PC, motherboard, or sound-card manufacturer. |
| Device is visible only under hidden devices | Previously connected or currently unavailable device | Enable it if possible, restart, and check the Playback tab. |
| No audio device appears in Device Manager | Detection, driver availability, or hardware problem | Use the Get Help troubleshooter, then obtain manufacturer support or try a compatible USB adapter. |
| Internal output remains unavailable but USB audio works | Internal audio path is still failing | Use the USB device temporarily or arrange hardware-specific repair. |
When to contact the manufacturer
Escalate to the PC, motherboard, or sound-card manufacturer when no playback device appears after the Settings checks, Playback-tab checks, Device Manager inspection, driver installation, and Get Help diagnostics. Use the exact model number and the manufacturer’s own Windows 10 driver and hardware-support process. A manufacturer can determine whether the audio controller is disabled at the hardware level, requires a model-specific package, or needs physical service.
Have the following information ready: the computer or sound-card model, whether the device appears under Sound, video and game controllers, whether hidden devices were shown, which driver package was attempted, and whether a compatible USB audio adapter works. Those details identify whether the remaining issue is selection, software, or internal hardware.
