Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf OBS shows no microphone activity, first find the layer that is failing: the operating system may not be receiving the signal, macOS may be blocking permission, OBS may be using the wrong device, or the signal may be routed, muted, monitored, or assigned to the wrong recording track. Speak while watching the operating system’s input meter, then select the exact microphone in OBS, verify the mixer, and make a short local recording. This order tells you whether you need a setting change, a routing fix, or different hardware.
What “mic not working in OBS” actually means
OBS can fail to produce an audible voice in several different ways. The microphone can be electrically fine while the operating system input is muted. The operating system can show a healthy signal while OBS is listening to a different device. OBS can show a moving meter while the recording is silent because the source is muted, monitored incorrectly, or excluded from the recording track. Treat these as separate failure layers rather than replacing hardware immediately.

| What you observe | Most likely layer | First check |
|---|---|---|
| No movement in the operating-system input meter | Microphone, cable, port, interface, permission, or OS input control | Test the device in the OS sound settings and check its input level |
| OS meter moves, OBS meter does not | OBS source or device selection | Open source properties and choose the exact microphone |
| OBS meter moves, playback is silent | Mute, monitoring, track assignment, or recording routing | Inspect Advanced Audio Properties and the recording tracks |
| A known-good input works but this microphone does not | Original microphone, cable, port, or interface input | Swap one hardware component at a time |
Step 1: Prove that the operating system receives your voice
Do this before changing an OBS scene or adding filters. Open your operating system’s sound input controls, select the intended microphone, and speak at a normal level. Watch the input meter.
Windows
- Open Settings → System → Sound.
- Under Input, select the microphone or interface you intend to use. If several devices have similar names, disconnect unused devices temporarily so the choice is unambiguous.
- Raise the input volume and speak while watching the test meter. Also open the Windows volume mixer and confirm that the recording device is not muted or attenuated.
- If Windows has no response, reconnect the microphone, try another USB port or interface input, and test a different cable where applicable. A different known-good microphone is a useful isolation test.
Windows has its own input level and mixer controls, separate from OBS. A device can be selected in OBS and still deliver silence if Windows is sending it a zero-level signal.

macOS
- Open System Settings → Sound → Input (or System Preferences → Sound → Input on older macOS versions).
- Choose the microphone and speak while observing the input level. Raise the input volume if necessary.
- In OBS, open OBS Studio → Review App Permissions and enable Microphone. This permission is required for OBS to capture the microphone and external audio devices.
- Quit and reopen OBS after changing the permission, then test the input again.
If macOS does not show input movement, solve the device, cable, interface, or macOS input selection first. If macOS does show movement but OBS remains silent, continue with OBS source selection.
Linux
- Open the desktop sound settings and select the intended input device.
- Speak while watching the desktop input meter. Confirm the microphone is not muted and that its capture level is raised.
- Use an OBS audio input source appropriate to the audio stack installed on your distribution, then select the same device explicitly.
- If the desktop sound system does not see the microphone, test another port, cable, interface input, or known-good microphone before changing OBS scenes.
Linux systems can expose different source choices depending on the installed audio stack. The essential test is the same: the desktop audio system must receive a signal before OBS can capture it.
Step 2: Select the microphone explicitly in OBS
Do not assume that Default means the microphone you just tested. Default can change when a headset is connected, an interface is powered on, or a monitor becomes the active audio device.

Add or edit an Audio Input Capture source
- Open the scene that should contain your voice.
- In the Sources panel, click + and choose Audio Input Capture (the label can vary slightly by OBS version and platform).
- Create a new source or select the existing microphone source.
- In the device field, choose the exact microphone, USB interface input, or headset you confirmed in the operating system. Avoid leaving the field on Default while diagnosing.
- Click OK, speak, and watch the corresponding channel in the OBS Audio Mixer.
An Audio Input/Output Capture source adds an audio input or output device to a specific scene. This scene-level behavior matters: a microphone source in one scene is not automatically present in another scene unless you add or share it there.
Check the global Mic/Aux device
If you use OBS’s global audio controls instead of a scene source, open Settings → Audio and inspect the Mic/Auxiliary Audio device. Select the same exact microphone rather than a stale default entry. Avoid selecting the same physical device both as a global Mic/Aux input and as an Audio Input Capture source, because duplicate sources can create confusing levels or echoes.
Step 3: Confirm the OBS mixer is receiving and routing the signal
Unmute and set a usable level
In the OBS Audio Mixer, find the microphone channel. The speaker icon must not show a slash, and the fader must not be at the bottom. Speak and look for meter movement. A very low but moving meter indicates level attenuation rather than total capture failure; raise the fader temporarily for testing, then set a comfortable level that does not remain in the red.

- Positionable design: Pivot the mic in relation to the sound source to optimize your sound quality thanks to the adjustable desktop stand and track your voice in real time with no-latency monitoring
Inspect Advanced Audio Properties
- Right-click the microphone channel in the mixer and choose Advanced Audio Properties.
- Confirm the source is not muted and review its Monitoring setting. Use monitoring only when you need to hear the signal through OBS.
- Check which recording tracks are enabled for the source. A source can appear in the mixer yet be absent from the track selected for the recording you are playing back.
- For testing, use the simplest routing: leave monitoring disabled, enable the track you intend to record, and make a short clip.
If you need live monitoring, wear headphones. Speakers can feed the microphone and create acoustic feedback. Once the raw signal records correctly, restore your preferred monitoring and processing settings one change at a time.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Step 4: Remove filters and test the raw signal
Filters can reduce a voice to near silence when thresholds, gains, or suppression settings are inappropriate. Temporarily remove or disable every filter on the microphone source, including noise suppression, expander, compressor, and gain filters. Speak close enough to produce a clear raw meter response, record a short clip, and play it outside the live stream. If the raw clip works, re-enable filters one at a time and test after each change. The filter that makes the voice disappear is the one to adjust or replace.
Step 5: Separate recording problems from streaming problems
- Choose Start Recording in OBS rather than testing only a live stream.
- Speak for 10–20 seconds while watching the mixer.
- Stop recording and play the local file in a media player.
- If the local file contains your voice, microphone capture is working; investigate the streaming service’s selected audio track, scene, or platform-side settings instead.
- If the local file is silent while the OBS meter moved, return to mute, monitoring, and track assignment checks.
This test avoids confusing an OBS capture issue with a stream-platform configuration issue and gives you a repeatable clip for every subsequent change.

Step 6: Isolate a hardware fault
Once the operating system and OBS settings are correct, change one physical element at a time:
- Try a different USB port, preferably a port directly on the computer rather than an unpowered hub.
- Replace a detachable microphone cable with a known-good cable.
- Use a different input on an audio interface.
- Connect a known-good microphone or headset to the same port and select it explicitly in the OS and OBS.
- Test the original microphone on another computer if available.
If the known-good input works immediately while the original remains silent across ports and computers, the original microphone, cable, or interface input is the likely fault. If neither input works, return to operating-system permissions and input controls rather than buying replacement hardware.

When a USB microphone is a sensible replacement or diagnostic tool
A USB microphone is useful when you have confirmed a hardware fault or need a controlled alternate input. OBS supports selectable audio input devices, so a USB model can replace a failed microphone and provide a separate test path that bypasses a suspect analog cable or interface input.

Common symptoms and the fastest branch to follow
“OBS does not list my microphone”
Confirm the operating system detects it first. Reconnect the device, try another port, and reopen OBS. On macOS, verify Microphone is enabled under OBS Studio → Review App Permissions. If the OS never lists the device, OBS cannot select it.
“The OBS meter never moves”
Watch the OS input meter while speaking. If it is also still, fix the OS device, permission, level, cable, port, or interface. If it moves, edit the OBS source and choose the exact device instead of Default.
“The meter moves, but the recording is silent”
Check the mixer mute icon, fader, Advanced Audio Properties, monitoring configuration, and enabled recording track. Disable filters and make another local clip before changing hardware.
