If the Microsoft Teredo Tunneling Adapter is missing, do not install a legacy pseudo-interface manually. Open an elevated Command Prompt and run netsh interface Teredo set state type=default. Microsoft says Teredo should reinstall automatically. Restart Windows if it does not reappear, then check Teredo’s registry state, Xbox networking, and any router or firewall that may block Teredo.
What the missing Teredo adapter means
Teredo is a Windows networking component used when applications need Teredo tunneling, commonly for Xbox app multiplayer and NAT traversal. The adapter may not be visible in Device Manager even when Windows can recreate it on demand. A missing entry therefore does not automatically mean that a physical network card has failed.

The practical distinction is important: a Teredo state problem, a local policy setting, a router or firewall restriction, and a general network-driver failure require different fixes. Start with the supported Teredo command before changing drivers or resetting the entire network.
Fastest supported reinstall
Microsoft Q&A guidance uses an administrative netsh command. Run it exactly as shown; the command restores Teredo’s default state rather than installing a legacy device by hand.

- Open the Xbox app’s network settings, or inspect the network-adapter list again. If the component is still absent, restart Windows and check once more.
Do not use Add legacy hardware in Device Manager to install a “Teredo Tunneling Pseudo-Interface.” Microsoft warns that manually installing that legacy adapter can cause Teredo-functionality issues. The supported command lets Windows create the component with the correct configuration.
Check whether Teredo is disabled in Windows
If the default-state command does not restore Teredo, check the IP Helper service’s Teredo registry key. This is a read-only query and does not change anything.
- Open Command Prompt as administrator again.
- Run:
reg query HKLMSystemCurrentControlSetServicesiphlpsvcTeredo - Read the output for a line similar to
Type REG_DWORD 0x4.
A Type value of REG_DWORD 0x4 indicates that Teredo is disabled. Microsoft Q&A guidance recommends re-enabling it with the supported administrative command rather than editing the registry value manually. Run:

If your organization manages the computer, a Group Policy or security baseline may reapply the disabled setting; contact the administrator instead of repeatedly changing the local registry.
Why Teredo can remain unavailable
Microsoft identifies three broad sources when Windows cannot obtain a Teredo address: the Teredo component itself, a network device that blocks Teredo traffic, or software that disables Teredo functionality. Use the symptoms below to choose the next check.
| What you observe | Most likely area | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| The adapter is absent immediately after a change or update | Local Teredo state or policy | Run the default-state command, query the registry, and restart. |
| Teredo is present but Xbox reports “Teredo is unable to qualify” | Router, firewall, VPN, or other network filtering | Test without interfering software and review router/firewall rules. |
| Ethernet or Wi-Fi also fails, or the adapter has a warning icon | General network-driver health | Repair or reinstall the physical network adapter driver. |
| Only a managed work or school PC shows the issue | Administrative policy | Ask the administrator whether Teredo is intentionally disabled. |

The Xbox message is a symptom, not proof that Teredo hardware needs replacement. Work through local Windows configuration first, then isolate network interference.

1. Confirm the Windows state
Run netsh interface Teredo set state type=default in an elevated Command Prompt, restart Windows, and reopen the Xbox app. If the registry query shows Type REG_DWORD 0x4, the disabled state must be reversed through the supported command.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2. Test security and tunnel software
Firewalls, VPN clients, traffic filters, and other software can disable or block Teredo. Temporarily disconnect a VPN and exit network-filtering utilities for a controlled test, while keeping your normal security protection enabled. If Xbox networking works only after a product is disabled, restore it and consult that product’s documentation for a Teredo-compatible exception; do not leave the computer unprotected.
3. Check the router and network path
A router or another network device can prevent Teredo from obtaining an address even though ordinary web browsing works. Restart the router, install its current firmware according to the manufacturer’s instructions, and test the PC on a different trusted network, such as a phone hotspot. A change between networks is useful evidence: it points to the original router, ISP path, or network policy rather than to Windows’ local adapter.

Use these steps only when the physical Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter is also malfunctioning, not as a substitute for the Teredo command. Microsoft Support describes uninstalling the network adapter driver and restarting so Windows can detect the hardware and look for a driver again.
Uninstall and redetect the physical adapter
- Right-click Start and open Device Manager.
- Expand Network adapters.
- Right-click the affected Ethernet or Wi-Fi adapter and choose Uninstall device. If a checkbox asks whether to remove the driver package, select it only when you have a known compatible replacement available.
- Restart Windows. The operating system should detect the hardware and attempt to install an available driver.
- Reconnect to the network and retest Teredo with the Xbox networking page.
If Windows cannot reinstall the physical adapter, download the exact driver for the computer or adapter model from its manufacturer using another device, copy it to the affected PC, and install it. This repairs the underlying network hardware path; it does not manually create a Teredo pseudo-interface.

Use Network reset as a later fallback
Network reset removes and reinstalls network adapters and returns networking components to their default settings. In Windows 11, open Settings > Network & internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset. In Windows 10, open Settings > Network & Internet > Status > Network reset. Select Reset now and restart when prompted.
Network reset can remove saved Wi-Fi networks, VPN adapters, and custom networking software settings. Record Wi-Fi passwords and VPN details first. Because it changes general networking, use it after the Teredo command, policy check, router test, and physical-driver checks.
Windows-version and support considerations
The Teredo procedure applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, but the surrounding menus differ slightly by release. Microsoft ended Windows 10 support on October 14, 2025. A Windows 10 PC can still have a Teredo configuration problem after that date, yet the operating system’s unsupported lifecycle is a separate risk: it no longer receives normal Windows 10 support and security servicing. If the machine is eligible, plan a supported move to Windows 11 rather than treating an upgrade as a Teredo repair.

An update may correct a networking component, but no update can override a router policy or a deliberately disabled Teredo setting.
What not to do
- Do not install the Teredo pseudo-interface manually through Device Manager’s legacy-hardware wizard.
- Do not edit the registry’s Teredo values blindly; first query the key and use the supported
netshcommand. - Do not replace a working Ethernet or Wi-Fi card solely because the Teredo entry is absent.
- Do not assume an Xbox NAT message proves that Windows’ physical network driver is defective.
- Do not disable security software permanently to make a test pass; identify and configure the specific conflicting feature instead.
When the problem is fixed
After a successful repair, the Xbox networking page should no longer report that Teredo is unable to qualify, or it should show a reachable Teredo/NAT status. The physical network connection should remain stable, and the registry query should no longer show Teredo disabled. If the command completes but the Xbox error returns only on one network, keep the Windows configuration unchanged and investigate that network’s router, firewall, or policy.
Quick Recap
As an optional shortcut for a broader adapter-driver problem, Outbyte Driver Updater can scan more than 100 devices for outdated, corrupted, or missing drivers, install official drivers, show current and recommended versions, and provide backup, restore, and scheduled scans. It runs on Windows 11, 10, 8, and 7; a two-day free trial requires no credit card, followed by a subscription. Results vary, and it does not repair every Teredo or Xbox networking problem.
