If Resident Evil 5 will not launch, opens and immediately closes, or shows a LIVE-related error, start with the current Steam build’s official checks: update Windows and your graphics driver, verify the game files, remove unexpected compatibility settings, clear shader data, check security software and display settings, and update DirectX. The Steam release removed Games for Windows LIVE support in February 2023, so do not install random GFWL files unless you have confirmed that you are dealing with an old or partially migrated copy.
Why Resident Evil 5 may fail to start
Resident Evil 5 has two very different troubleshooting histories. The current Steam release is a Steamworks build. Capcom’s February 27, 2023 update removed Games for Windows LIVE support, added local split-screen co-op and included minor bug fixes. A normal, up-to-date Steam installation should therefore not require a separate LIVE client or an xlive.dll download.

Older installations, copied game folders and incomplete migrations can still contain the legacy GFWL components. Those copies may show LIVE, profile, sign-in or save errors that do not apply to a clean current Steam install. The fix depends on which build you have, your exact Windows version, your graphics hardware and whether the symptom is a silent close, a black screen, a missing-media error or a login/save failure.
Steam lists Windows 10 for Resident Evil 5. Windows 7 support for the title ended on April 24, 2022. Capcom also warns that normal operation is not guaranteed on unsupported minimum specifications, mobile or external GPUs, or Windows Insider builds.

Identify your installation before changing anything
Check the platform and Windows version
- Open Steam and note whether Resident Evil 5 is installed through your current Steam library, rather than copied from an older computer or disc.
- Press
Windows + R, enterwinver, and record the Windows edition and build. Also note whether the edition is an Insider preview or an “N” edition without media components. - In Steam, open Library, right-click Resident Evil 5, choose Properties, and check the installed-files page. Write down the exact error text before trying a fix; “xlive,” “LIVE,” a black screen and an immediate close point to different branches below.
Check hardware against the Steam listing
Compare your processor, memory, graphics adapter and free storage with the minimum and recommended specifications shown on the game’s Steam page. A laptop’s integrated or external GPU can behave differently from a supported desktop adapter. If your PC is below the listed minimum, or if you are using an external or mobile GPU, software fixes may not produce normal operation.
Official first-line fixes, in the safest order
1. Update Windows, the graphics driver and restart
- Open Settings > Windows Update, install all available updates, and restart even if Windows does not explicitly request it.
- Install the latest driver supplied by your GPU manufacturer for your exact graphics model and Windows version. Reboot after installation.
- If the failure began immediately after a driver change, use Device Manager > Display adapters > your adapter > Properties > Driver to check whether Roll Back Driver is available. Do not remove a working driver without having a replacement ready.
Updating the operating system and graphics stack is a prerequisite for the later graphics and DirectX checks. Test the game once after the restart before changing several settings at once.
2. Verify the Steam installation files
- In Steam, open Library, right-click Resident Evil 5, select Properties, then Installed Files.
- Choose Verify integrity of game files and wait for Steam to finish.
- Launch the game from Steam, not from a copied executable. If Steam reacquires files, allow that process to complete before testing.
Verification is reversible and should be attempted before deleting components or reinstalling the game.

3. Check security software without leaving protection disabled
Security software can block a newly updated executable or quarantine a game file. Only make an exclusion when your security product’s event or quarantine history shows that it blocked Resident Evil 5 or Steam.
- Add the Resident Evil 5 installation folder, the game executable and the Steam installation folder to the product’s allowed or excluded list.
- Restore normal real-time protection immediately after the launch test. Do not download replacement DLLs or disable protection permanently.
- If an excluded file was quarantined, restore it only when you recognize the file and the alert is clearly a false positive; otherwise remove the exclusion and contact the security vendor.
4. Set appropriate permissions and remove unexpected Compatibility Mode
- Right-click the Steam shortcut, choose Properties > Compatibility, and make sure Compatibility Mode is not enabled unexpectedly. Apply the same check to the Resident Evil 5 executable in its Steam folder.
- For a permissions test, right-click Steam and choose Run as administrator, then launch the game from the Steam client. If that works, close Steam and review folder permissions rather than leaving every program permanently elevated.
- On the executable’s Compatibility tab, do not combine several compatibility modes, DPI overrides and administrator settings while troubleshooting; change one setting at a time so you can undo it.
5. Review GPU selection, power and display settings
- On a laptop, open Settings > System > Display > Graphics, add the Resident Evil 5 executable if necessary, choose Options, and select the high-performance GPU. The label differs by Windows edition.
- In Control Panel > Power Options, select a normal or high-performance plan while testing on AC power. Return to your preferred plan afterward.
- Disconnect an external GPU or dock temporarily if the game is being forced onto it, then test the computer’s supported internal adapter.
- Check the monitor’s resolution, refresh rate and scaling. If the game reaches a black screen, test a standard desktop resolution and a windowed launch from the game’s available display settings.
Capcom does not guarantee normal operation on mobile or external GPUs, so hardware routing is an important distinction rather than a universal fix.
6. Install the required media components and update DirectX
Resident Evil 5 can depend on Windows media components for video playback. On Windows 10 or 11 “N” editions, open Settings > Apps > Optional features and install the applicable Media Feature Pack, then restart. On other editions, install pending Windows Media Player updates through Windows Update or Optional Features. Do not use codec packs from unattributed download sites.

Run Windows Update and install the current DirectX components intended for your Windows version. Use Microsoft’s official installer or Windows servicing tools, not a standalone DLL copied from a third-party site. Restart and test again after DirectX installation.
7. Clear shader data and close competing applications
- Exit Resident Evil 5 and Steam completely, including Steam in the notification area.
- Delete the game’s shader-cache files using the locations and file names specified in Capcom’s troubleshooting instructions. Steam or the game will recreate needed shader data on the next launch.
- Close overlays, screen recorders, hardware monitors, RGB utilities and other background applications. Temporarily disable the Steam overlay for Resident Evil 5 from its game properties.
- Restart Steam and test before re-enabling those programs one at a time.
A corrupted shader cache or an overlay hook can cause a launch crash without producing a useful error message.
When a GFWL or xlive error appears
Do not treat every mention of “LIVE” as proof that a current Steam installation needs GFWL. First confirm that Steam has finished updating the game and that file verification has completed. If the folder is an old GFWL-era copy, or the error explicitly names LIVE or xlive, document the message and use the historical cleanup only for that legacy case.

Historical cleanup for an old or partially migrated installation
An archived Capcom support response describes incompatible GFWL files as a cause of launch crashes, LIVE-profile problems and save failures. Its procedure is invasive and version-specific:
- In Settings > Apps > Installed apps (or Control Panel > Programs and Features), uninstall Microsoft Games for Windows – LIVE Redistributable and Microsoft Games for Windows Marketplace. Remove Windows Live ID Sign-in Assistant if it is present.
- After uninstalling, remove remaining GFWL folders left by those components. Also remove the user folder
%LOCALAPPDATA%MicrosoftGFWLiveif it exists. - Restart Windows, open Steam, verify Resident Evil 5’s installed files again and launch the current Steam build.
- Only reinstall a legacy LIVE component when the specific older game build or another application still requires it. The current Steam release removed GFWL support, so adding it blindly can recreate the conflict.
Back up any local saves before deleting user-data folders. If the game still reports LIVE after a clean Steam verification, contact Capcom or Steam support with the exact error, Windows build and installation history instead of repeatedly installing different GFWL packages.

RE5Patch is an unofficial, version-sensitive option. Its README describes a DLL-proxy patch for the Steam executable and warns that the project must recognize the installed game build. Treat it as a last resort after the official checks above.

- Read the project’s README and confirm that its supported build matches your Steam executable.
- Keep a backup of the original files and use Steam’s verification feature to restore them if the patch causes a new failure.
- Never download DLLs from unattributed mirrors, “DLL fix” pages or file-reupload sites.

When to reinstall or contact support
Reinstall only after Windows, driver, security, compatibility, DirectX, media-component and file-verification checks have failed. Before uninstalling, confirm that Steam Cloud is synchronized if you use it and preserve any local saves you need. After reinstalling, launch the untouched Steam build before adding overlays, patches or custom settings.
When opening a support ticket, include the exact error text, Windows edition and build, CPU and GPU model, driver version, whether the installation is current Steam or legacy GFWL-era, and which official steps you completed. Capcom asks users to follow its PC, Steam and game-file checks before creating a ticket; that information lets support distinguish a missing dependency from a hardware or compatibility problem.
