A Solon AI ChatModel can serve either a simple, application-defined server-sent event (SSE) stream or the structured Vercel AI SDK UI Message Stream Protocol v1. The right choice depends on what your frontend expects: SSE is only the transport here, not a guarantee that two clients understand the same event data.
Choose the event contract before wiring the endpoint
Both approaches can carry a live response over SSE, but they expose different event contracts. Solon’s documented adapter converts ChatModel.prompt().stream() output—a Flux<ChatResponse>—into events following the AI SDK UI Message Stream Protocol v1. A separate example sends response content as ordinary SSE for a client that handles its own parsing.

| Decision | Plain SSE for a custom frontend | AI SDK UI Message Stream Protocol v1 |
|---|---|---|
| Event contract | Application-defined or simple SSE data; Solon’s example sends message content. | Typed message parts intended for compatible AI SDK UI clients. |
| Best fit | An existing frontend, a custom parser, or straightforward text rendering. | Vue or React integrations using AI SDK useChat and richer message features. |
| Rich message parts | Your application must define and parse them. | Documented support includes text, reasoning, tool calls, sources, files, custom data, and metadata. |
| Backend setup | Return SSE events in the format your client expects. | Use the adapter, return SSE, and set x-vercel-ai-ui-message-stream: v1. |
| Main trade-off | You own parsing and UI state. | You must follow the protocol and match the client’s expected message contract. |
These are implementation trade-offs, not performance comparisons. The Solon guide, dated March 9, 2026, presents solon-ai-ui-aisdk as an adapter for the AI SDK UI and includes Vue and React examples. It credits the plugin’s main community contribution to 烤烧饵块. The guide does not establish an exact artifact release or a release-by-release compatibility matrix.

Choose plain SSE when the frontend is not using the AI SDK UI protocol, or when you deliberately want to define how streamed data becomes application state. Solon’s vanilla JavaScript example uses fetch and a stream reader/decoder to consume the response. Your client then parses the SSE events and decides what to display.

This route can be adapted to an existing UI, but it leaves event interpretation to your application. A client expecting plain message content cannot be assumed to understand typed events such as text-delta or tool-input-*. Likewise, sending SSE does not make a custom payload interchangeable with the AI SDK’s structured stream.
When to use the AI SDK UI Message Stream Protocol
Use the structured protocol when the client needs typed message parts rather than only rendered text. The Solon guide lists message start, optional metadata, step start and finish, reasoning, tool input and output, URL and document sources, text start/delta/end, files, custom data-* parts, finish, and error or abort events.

The AI SDK documentation says, “Text streams only support basic text data.” For tool calls and other structured UI data, use a data stream and a client that understands the corresponding protocol. See the AI SDK Stream Protocols documentation for its stream formats and termination behavior.

Wire the Solon endpoint to the AI SDK contract
The Solon example injects a ChatModel, exposes an SSE-producing endpoint, sets the protocol header, and wraps the streamed model response with the adapter. Its essential shape is:

return wrapper.toAiSdkStream(chatModel.prompt(prompt).stream());
For this endpoint, return an SSE response and set x-vercel-ai-ui-message-stream: v1. The header signals the UI Message Stream Protocol version; it is part of the contract, not a substitute for producing correctly structured events. The Solon guide’s implementation examples and the protocol documentation are available at Solon’s AI SDK UI integration guide.
Map the Vue request body to the backend prompt
In the guide’s Vue example, useChat targets the endpoint. A custom fetch function adapts the submitted request body so the last user message becomes the backend’s prompt, alongside a sessionId. This matters because the client’s message-oriented request shape need not match the controller’s prompt-oriented input shape.

Keep versions aligned
The Solon guide provides Maven coordinates but does not state the adapter’s exact current artifact release or an authoritative compatibility matrix for the adapter and @ai-sdk/vue or @ai-sdk/react. Check the current release metadata and the dependency versions in your project before treating an example as copy-paste-ready; do not infer compatibility from the fact that both sides use SSE.

Preserve event identity and ordering
Structured streams can represent multiple actions and parts, so event IDs and ordering affect how the UI assembles them. Keep an action’s ID consistent across its start, delta, and end events, and give separate actions distinct IDs. The Solon guide cautions that parallel, out-of-order agent activity can otherwise be confused in the interface.

For a custom SSE contract, define equivalent identity and ordering rules if the client needs to combine chunks into separate messages or actions. SSE itself does not supply the application semantics for that work.
Do not turn a completed call into a token stream by name alone
The Solon guide also shows wrapping a blocking prompt().call() result as a “fake stream” for a less common scenario. That can provide a stream-shaped response after the model call has completed; it is not token-by-token generation. Use prompt().stream() when the endpoint is meant to forward streamed model output.
Check the client’s expected termination and error behavior
The AI SDK protocol documentation describes SSE and a [DONE] termination marker. Its clients and the Solon adapter need to agree on the protocol details, including completion and error handling. For a custom SSE consumer, implement the termination, parsing, and UI-state behavior your own event contract requires rather than assuming that an AI SDK client can consume it unchanged.
