Engineering Publishing Platform: What It Aims to Preserve

A project that began as a way to publish engineering articles across multiple destinations grew into a vision for capturing and sharing the judgment behind them.

Publishing engineering content shouldn’t require publishing it five different times. I started building an engineering publishing platform to reduce the repeated work of distributing an article—and then realized the harder problem was capturing and developing the engineering ideas worth sharing in the first place.

What prompted the project

I had committed to writing more because engineering knowledge can disappear when architecture discussions end, incidents recede into memory, and lessons from one project never reach the next. I began publishing on my own website as well as Medium, Hashnode, DEV.to, and Coder Legion.

That workflow meant repeating practical tasks for each destination: copying Markdown, uploading images, recreating tags, adjusting formatting, updating SEO metadata, generating excerpts, and preparing social posts. My initial goal was straightforward: automate distribution while keeping my own website as the source of truth.

This is a problem I encountered in my own publishing workflow; it is not evidence that every engineering writer or team faces the same burden.

Why distribution alone was not enough

The first concept was a service that would publish an article once and push it to other destinations. Designing that idea led me to think beyond a collection of platform integrations. Each destination has its own publishing conventions, so the system would need to represent content, target-specific behavior, and the progress of a publication as separate concerns.

Articles as releases

In the proposed design, an article becomes an immutable release that can be sent to one or more publishing targets. A release gives the system a defined version of the content to distribute, rather than treating every destination as an unrelated copy.

Connectors and orchestration

Each target would have a connector that understands its platform. An orchestration layer would manage deployments, retries, status, and lifecycle across those connectors. Together, those ideas make the design resemble a software delivery pipeline more than a conventional blogging tool.

These are architecture ideas from the project’s vision, not a claim that the capabilities are already available in a released product.

The bigger challenge is developing the idea

As I worked through the design, I changed my view of what makes publishing difficult. Distribution creates repetitive work, but the central challenge is often discovering and developing an idea worth turning into an article.

Writing can begin with a conversation, an old lesson, or an architectural decision. The words may come only after time spent reflecting on what happened, what mattered, and what another engineer could learn from it. Automating the final publishing steps does not solve that earlier work.

A platform for preserving engineering judgment

The broader vision connects conversations to drafts, drafts to articles, and articles to releases that can reach different destinations. The platform should help organize ideas, generate summaries and metadata, manage revisions, and eventually make sense of relationships among an author’s writing.

The aim is not simply to store Markdown files. It is to help preserve engineering judgment: the reasoning behind decisions, the lessons drawn from experience, and the connections that make those lessons useful later. This describes the product vision, not a checklist of released features.

What I plan to document

As the project develops, I plan to write about its architecture, implementation, tradeoffs, and mistakes. That may include technical deep dives into connector architecture and deployment pipelines, as well as explanations of the decisions behind the system.

I thought I was building a way to publish blog posts. Instead, I found myself designing a platform for capturing and sharing engineering experience.
