Solo Leveling: Ragnarok Explained: How the Sequel Connects to the Original Story

Solo Leveling: Ragnarok shifts the story to Sung Soo-ho, Sung Jin-woo’s son. Here is what the official sequel and spin-off descriptions establish about its continuity, premise, canon status and reading order.

Yes. Solo Leveling: Ragnarok is the continuation connected to the original Solo Leveling through Sung Jin-woo’s son, Sung Soo-ho (also rendered Sooho Sung). Yen Press and Ize Press market the comic as a sequel, while Kakao Entertainment describes the web novel as a spin-off. Those labels describe different editions and publishing contexts; both identify the same direct franchise connection.

Ragnarok moves the viewpoint from Jin-woo to Soo-ho. Years after the original conclusion, Soo-ho appears to be an ordinary college student until a campus monster outbreak, a near-death experience and a system notification force him to confront his missing parents, his bloodline and the legacy left by his father.

What is Solo Leveling: Ragnarok?

Solo Leveling: Ragnarok is a new story in the Solo Leveling franchise, not an unrelated fantasy using the same name. Its central character is Sung Soo-ho, the son of Sung Jin-woo, the protagonist of the original series. The family relationship is the clearest bridge between the two works.

The terminology varies by format. Yen Press and its Ize Press imprint describe the English comic as “the highly anticipated sequel to the hit fantasy novel and comic SOLO LEVELING.” Kakao Entertainment’s January 12, 2024 newsroom article calls the web novel a spin-off following Sung Jin-woo’s son. Neither description contradicts the other: “sequel” is the English comic publisher’s marketing position, while “spin-off” identifies Kakao’s web-novel project as a story branching from the established series.

Version or description How the official source labels it What that means for readers
English comic cataloged by Yen Press/Ize Press Sequel to the original fantasy novel and comic A follow-up story in the same franchise, centered on Jin-woo’s son
Web novel described by Kakao Entertainment Spin-off A related story that expands the franchise through a new lead character
Continuity evidence Shared family, history and inherited stakes Soo-ho’s identity and his father’s legacy drive the new plot

These are official positioning statements, not a detailed public canon policy. The available publisher descriptions establish continuity, but they do not spell out a formal rule for every event, side story or adaptation.

How Ragnarok connects to the original story

Soo-ho is Jin-woo’s son

Ragnarok inherits its connection through parentage rather than by keeping the original hero as the viewpoint character. Soo-ho is Jin-woo’s son, and the new story asks what that inheritance means for someone who did not choose it. Yen Press describes him as discovering the truth about his lineage and the weight of a legacy he never asked for.

That setup lets the sequel acknowledge the original protagonist while giving the new lead his own motivation. Soo-ho is not simply a renamed version of Jin-woo. His questions begin with his family: where his parents went, why parts of his past are hidden, and what his father’s history has left behind.

The missing-parent mystery

Publisher and licensed-platform summaries say Soo-ho’s parents disappeared around the time gates began appearing. At the start, he is presented as an apparently ordinary college student. His routine changes when a monster outbreak occurs on campus. He risks himself to save a classmate and receives a system notification telling him that he has become a Player.

This incident is the practical starting point for the sequel. The gates and outbreak connect his everyday life to the supernatural crisis familiar from the original franchise, while the disappearance of his parents supplies a personal mystery. The story therefore links public danger and family history instead of treating them as separate plot lines.

Memories, awakening and bloodline

Tappytoon’s licensed-series description adds that Soo-ho’s strange visions turn out to be actual memories. A near-death experience awakens dormant memories and reveals more about his bloodline. These details frame the early story as an investigation: Soo-ho must determine what he remembers, what was concealed from him and how his inherited abilities relate to the danger facing Earth.

The summaries establish those ingredients but do not provide every resolution. They should not be read as confirmation of later twists, a complete explanation of Jin-woo’s whereabouts or a scene-by-scene account of how the original ending leads into Ragnarok.

Where the original ending and side stories fit

The original web novel concluded before the webtoon received additional material. Kakao Entertainment reported that the original webtoon later added special episodes covering side stories and an epilogue. Those episodes belong to the post-conclusion run of the original series.

They can be useful context for readers who want to trace the franchise beyond the main ending, especially if they prefer to read every available original-series chapter before moving on. However, the official pages reviewed do not say that completing the side stories is mandatory before starting Ragnarok. They also do not identify the epilogue as literally being Ragnarok’s prologue.

That distinction prevents two common reading-order mistakes:

  • Do not treat the original side stories as chapters of Ragnarok.
  • Do not assume that every event in the side stories has been explicitly mapped to a sequel plot point.

The safest description is that the side stories and epilogue expand the original series, while Ragnarok is a separate follow-up centered on Soo-ho.

Recommended reading paths

There is no competing sequel title to choose between. The meaningful choice is how much of the original material you want to read before entering Soo-ho’s story.

Path 1: Complete background

  1. Read the original Solo Leveling novel or comic through its main conclusion.
  2. Read the original webtoon’s special side-story episodes and epilogue if you want all post-conclusion material from that series.
  3. Begin Solo Leveling: Ragnarok and treat it as Soo-ho’s story, not as a continuation narrated by Jin-woo.

Path 2: Main-story-first

  1. Finish the original main story.
  2. Start Ragnarok once you understand Jin-woo’s identity and Soo-ho’s place in the family.
  3. Return to the original side stories afterward if you want additional franchise context.

Path 3: New-reader entry

You can begin with Ragnarok if the premise of a college student discovering his bloodline appeals to you, but the emotional and historical references will have more weight after reading the original. The official summaries establish the family link and central mystery; they do not promise that every earlier event will be re-explained for a first-time reader.

Who made the comic adaptation?

Credits are edition-specific. The Yen Press catalog lists Daul as the original author, JIN of REDICE STUDIO as artist and Brix of REDICE STUDIO as adapter for its comic edition. Those credits identify the people and studio attached to that cataloged adaptation; they should not be generalized to every edition or to the web novel without an edition-specific credit line.

Is Ragnarok officially canon?

The strongest verifiable answer is narrower than a blanket canon declaration. Official descriptions consistently connect Ragnarok to the original through Jin-woo, Soo-ho, the missing-parent mystery and inherited powers. Yen Press calls the comic a sequel, and Kakao calls the web novel a spin-off. Together, those statements establish an official franchise relationship.

What has not been published in the cited material is a formal canon policy explaining how every adaptation, side story, epilogue event and future installment should be ranked. Therefore, it is accurate to call Ragnarok the official sequel or spin-off continuation in publisher terms, but not to claim that the available descriptions provide a complete canon map.

How its audience and view figures should be understood

Kakao has reported large audiences for both works, but the figures measure different titles in different years and should not be compared as a single performance chart.

Work Figure Source and date Important qualification
Original Solo Leveling webtoon 14.3 billion cumulative worldwide views Kakao Entertainment announcement, January 26, 2023 This is for the original webtoon, not Ragnarok
Solo Leveling: Ragnarok spin-off web novel Over 50 million views Kakao Entertainment newsroom article, January 12, 2024 “Over 50 million” is the wording reported at that time, not a current total

The numbers use different dates, titles and reporting contexts. They demonstrate the reach of the franchise, but they are not equivalent measurements and do not show that one work has overtaken the other.

What returning fans and new readers should expect

For returning fans

  • Expect the original hero’s legacy to matter even though Soo-ho is the lead.
  • Pay attention to the missing-parent mystery and visions, which supply information about Soo-ho’s past.
  • Keep the original side stories separate from Ragnarok when organizing your reading list.

For readers starting with Ragnarok

  • The opening premise introduces Soo-ho as an ordinary student before the supernatural conflict intrudes.
  • The family connection is central, so some references carry more significance after reading the original.
  • Publisher summaries reveal the setup, not every later answer; avoid treating promotional copy as a full plot synopsis.

Bottom line on the connection

Solo Leveling: Ragnarok follows the original through Sung Soo-ho, Sung Jin-woo’s son. Its story begins with Soo-ho’s missing parents, a campus monster outbreak, a Player awakening and the discovery that his visions and bloodline are tied to a larger legacy. Yen Press presents the comic as a sequel; Kakao presents the web novel as a spin-off. Both descriptions point to the same continuity link, while the available official material stops short of defining every canon relationship or making the original epilogue a required prologue.
