Choose Solid when its signal-based, fine-grained updates fit your interface and your team understands reactive tracking. Choose React when you need React-specific APIs or dependencies, are building on an existing React codebase, or prefer its render-and-Hooks model. Both let you compose interfaces from reusable components, but similar JSX does not make their component execution or state behavior interchangeable. Neither framework is a universal performance winner; decide based on semantics, team and dependency fit, and measurements from your own workload.
What composition means in Solid and React
UI composition means assembling an interface from reusable components and deciding where state and behavior belong. Solid and React both use JSX to describe interfaces, but JSX is syntax, not a shared execution model. In Solid, a component function initializes once and reactive expressions update the DOM regions that depend on tracked values. In React, a component describes UI from its current props, state, and context; React may render it again when those inputs change.

That difference affects how you write derived values, share state, and reuse behavior. Code that looks alike in JSX may have different tracking, lifecycle, and state-preservation semantics.

How Solid composition works
Components initialize once; tracked expressions update
Solid builds its state model around reactive primitives such as signals. A component runs during initialization; changing a signal does not, by itself, rerun the component function. Instead, Solid updates the DOM expressions that read the changed signal in a tracked scope. This supports targeted updates, but it also means you should not expect ordinary code in the component body to execute again whenever state changes. See Solid’s component basics and state management with signals.

Tracking determines what reacts
A signal read inside a tracked JSX expression or reactive scope subscribes that scope to updates. A read outside a tracking scope is untracked, so changing the signal will not cause that read’s surrounding code to run again. When behavior seems stale, check where the read occurs and whether the relevant code is inside a reactive construct. Solid explains this distinction in its fine-grained reactivity guide.
State ownership and sharing
Solid treats props as read-only, supporting one-way data flow. For state that spans components, its documentation describes context and stores as ways to organize data. Keep ownership clear as an application grows, and put derived or side-effectful work in appropriate reactive constructs rather than relying on a component rerender. The Solid state-management overview discusses these approaches and the organizational challenges of more complex interactions.

How React composition works
Components render from current inputs
A React component describes the UI for its current props, state, and context. A state update can cause that component—and potentially descendants—to render again. React’s rules frame components as descriptions of UI, while React Compiler can automatically memoize supported components and values to avoid some unnecessary work. Compiler support and project setup matter, so it is no longer accurate to say that React always requires developers to add memoization by hand.
Sharing state and reusable logic
When multiple components need coordinated state, React recommends placing it in their closest common parent and passing the relevant values and handlers to the children. Context can provide values to more distant descendants. React calls the first pattern “lifting state up” and describes it as one of the most common practices in React code. See Sharing State Between Components.

Custom Hooks let you reuse behavior across components, but they run as part of a component’s render behavior and must follow the Rules of Hooks. React state also follows identity and position in the render tree: component type and keys affect whether state is preserved or reset. This matters when composition changes which components appear at a given position; see Preserving and Resetting State.
Compare the approaches by the work you need to do
| Decision area | Solid | React |
|---|---|---|
| Component and update behavior | Components initialize once; tracked signal consumers update targeted DOM expressions. | Components describe UI from current props, state, and context; updates can cause component render work. |
| State organization | Reactive primitives form the foundation; context and stores can organize shared or complex state. | Lift coordinated state to the closest common parent; context can serve distant descendants. |
| Reusable behavior | Use Solid’s reactive primitives and scopes with attention to tracking. | Custom Hooks reuse logic within component render behavior and must obey Hook rules. |
| Optimization | Fine-grained reactivity updates consumers of tracked values. | React Compiler can memoize supported components and values when available and configured. |
| Compatibility and migration | Verify that the specific libraries and deployment requirements your project needs are supported by the Solid stack you plan to use. | React-specific APIs, libraries, and existing code can make React the more natural fit; assess migration from the actual dependency graph. |
These are different trade-offs, not a single ranking of which framework is “more composable.” Similar JSX does not make React components, Hooks, or state abstractions drop-in replacements for Solid’s components and reactive primitives.

When to choose Solid
- Your interface’s update patterns map naturally to explicit signal subscriptions and targeted reactive updates.
- Your team is comfortable reasoning about tracking scopes and components that initialize once rather than rerendering for each state change.
- The libraries and deployment requirements of the project are supported by the Solid stack you intend to use. Check the actual dependencies: framework documentation alone cannot establish compatibility for every third-party package.
When to choose React
- The project already uses React, or depends on React-specific libraries and APIs. Evaluate migration against the actual dependency graph instead of assuming shared JSX makes a port straightforward.
- Your team prefers rendering from current props, state, and context, along with Hooks and React’s state ownership conventions.
- Your project can use React Compiler and has the required support and configuration; its optimizations can reduce the need for some manual memoization.
How to decide if performance is the main concern
Solid’s targeted updates and React’s render model describe how each framework works; they do not prove that one will be faster for every application. Test representative user interactions with realistic data, using the versions, compiler and build configuration, and target devices you expect to ship. Compare the work your users actually trigger, rather than choosing from a general framework-speed claim.

A practical decision checklist
- Check your starting point. If you already have a React application or depend on React-only APIs, include the cost and risk of changing that dependency graph.
- Match the model to the team. Decide whether the team is more comfortable with Solid’s tracked reactive scopes or React’s component rendering and Hooks.
- Verify project fit. Confirm support for the libraries, deployment targets, and APIs the application needs; do not infer compatibility from JSX alone.
- Benchmark only if it can change the decision. Use representative interactions, realistic data, and the actual versions and build configuration on target devices.
