For a first electronics project, use a pencil-style iron that can heat the joint promptly, a stable stand, electronics rosin-core solder, and basic eye and ventilation protection. Adafruit suggests 25 watts or more for most of its kits and projects; a temperature-controlled iron with interchangeable tips gives better control but is not required for every beginner job.
What a soldering iron actually does
The iron heats the component lead and the circuit-board pad at the same time. Solder then melts onto those hot surfaces, wets them, and solidifies into the electrical and mechanical connection. A reliable joint depends on clean surfaces, suitable heat, enough solder, and keeping the parts still while the solder cools.

What should a beginner buy?
Choose an electronics pencil iron rather than a plumbing torch or a tool intended for heavy metalwork. The right choice depends on the joints you will make, not wattage alone.

|---|---|---|
| Modest pencil iron | Simple heating with fewer controls | Occasional, small hobby joints if it reaches the joint promptly |
| Temperature-controlled iron, interchangeable tips | Adjustable heat, recovery control, and tip flexibility | Frequent work, varied components, or projects where consistent technique matters |
| Higher-power controlled iron | More reserve for larger thermal masses | Adafruit’s professional-style example: 50 watts or more; this is a source-specific recommendation, not a beginner requirement |
Adafruit’s guide recommends 25 watts or more for most of its kits and projects. A 30-watt, 120-volt Weller corded iron with interchangeable tips is an example of the type of product currently listed by Weller in the United States; product specifications and availability can change, so verify voltage and replacement-tip support for your region.

Starter-tool checklist
- Electronics soldering iron and a stable, heat-resistant stand
- Electronics rosin-core solder
- Diagonal cutters for trimming component leads
- A vise, helping hands, or another method to keep the board and component still
- Solder wick or a desoldering pump if you expect to correct mistakes
Never use plumbing acid-core solder or acid flux on circuit boards. They can damage electronics and are not substitutes for electronics solder.
What temperature should you set?
Temperature depends on the solder alloy, the joint, the tip, and the workpiece. As cited examples, Adafruit says to set a temperature-controlled iron to 370°C (700°F) for 60/40 solder or 400°C (750°F) for lead-free solder. Treat these as starting examples from that guide, not universal settings for every iron or joint.

At the same time, the use of insulating rubber materials improves the safety of the soldering iron.
Lead-free solder can accelerate tip oxidation and may need more heat and flux. Do not compensate for an underpowered, dirty, or poorly tinned tip simply by turning the temperature up; fix the tool or technique first and use the lowest effective setting.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsHow to make a good through-hole joint
- Secure the work. Insert the component and support the board so neither part can move.
- Prepare the tip. Use a clean, lightly tinned tip. Follow the iron maker’s cleaning method; a damp sponge is one method described by Adafruit.
- Heat both surfaces. Touch the tip to the component lead and pad together. Heating only the pad or only the lead prevents proper wetting.
- Feed solder to the joint. Touch solder to the heated lead and pad, not to a blob carried on the iron. Feed only enough to form a smooth connection around the lead.
- Stop and withdraw. Remove the solder first, then the iron, while keeping the component still.
- Let it solidify. Do not move the board or lead during cooling. Movement while the solder is solidifying can create an unreliable cold joint.
- Inspect and trim. Look for solder covering the pad and lead without a loose ball, bridge, or obvious gap; then trim the lead with diagonal cutters.
Signs to correct
- Dull, cracked, or grainy surface: the joint may have moved during cooling or was not heated adequately. Reheat the lead and pad together, add a small amount of fresh solder if needed, and allow it to cool untouched.
- Solder will not spread: clean and tin the tip, remove contamination from the joint, and verify that both surfaces are being heated.
- Solder bridge between pads: remove excess solder with wick or a desoldering pump, then reheat each connection separately.
- Large blob with little contact: the solder was likely applied to the iron instead of the heated joint. Remove excess and repeat with the tip heating both surfaces.
Tip care and storage
- Keep the working surface clean and coated with a small amount of fresh solder.
- Use the manufacturer’s recommended cleaning method. Bill Earl’s Adafruit guide states: “Do not use files or abrasives to clean the tip.”
- Use the lowest temperature that reliably wets the joint.
- Switch the iron off during an extended idle period.
- Before shutdown, leave the tip covered with fresh solder to help protect it.
These practices matter especially with lead-free solder, whose flux and temperature demands can increase oxidation.

Safety while soldering
- Work in a ventilated area; for more than a few joints, use outdoor ventilation or a fan-and-filter arrangement as appropriate.
- Wear safety glasses, particularly when clipping leads or removing solder.
- Keep the iron in its stable stand whenever it is not touching the work.
- Wash hands after handling solder and before eating. If using leaded solder, keep food and drink away from the bench and clean surfaces to avoid spreading residue.
- Lead-free solder removes lead alloy content, but it does not eliminate flux fumes or the need for ventilation and good hygiene.
When to upgrade the iron
Upgrade when your current iron cannot heat the joint promptly, struggles with larger copper areas, lacks available replacement tips, or makes temperature control inconsistent. A controlled iron with interchangeable tips is useful when you move between fine pads and larger through-hole connections. Keep the safe stand, tip availability, regional voltage, and recovery behavior in the decision—not just the wattage printed on the box.
