iOS 26 does not provide a documented switch that completely disables Liquid Glass. You can change its appearance in Settings > Display & Brightness > Liquid Glass: choose Clear for a more transparent look or Tinted for greater contrast and opacity. These options do not restore the previous iOS design.
Change the Liquid Glass appearance
- Open Settings.
- Tap Display & Brightness.
- Tap Liquid Glass.
- Choose one of the available appearances:
- Clear: makes the material more transparent.
- Tinted: increases contrast and opacity, making the material less see-through.
The setting applies the supported system-wide appearance adjustment; it is not an off switch.
If the Liquid Glass choice is unavailable
Accessibility display settings can prevent the appearance from being changed. Check these settings:
- Open Settings.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap Display & Text Size.
- Turn off Reduce Transparency and Increase Contrast if either is enabled.
- Return to Settings > Display & Brightness > Liquid Glass and select Clear or Tinted.
Which option should you choose?
| Option | Visual effect | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Clear | More transparency | Keeping the translucent Liquid Glass style while reducing its visual weight |
| Tinted | More contrast and increased opacity | Making controls and Lock Screen notifications easier to distinguish |
What changed in iOS 26.1?
Apple added Tinted in iOS 26.1. Apple describes it as increasing the opacity of material in apps and Lock Screen notifications. Liquid Glass remains part of the iOS 26 system design, so the update adds an appearance choice rather than a complete disable control.

- They cannot remove Liquid Glass from iOS 26.
- They cannot bring back the exact interface styling from an earlier iOS release.
- They cannot guarantee that every translucent or animated element will look opaque.
If your goal is maximum legibility, start with Tinted and review the accessibility display settings above. If you prefer the lighter, more translucent treatment, choose Clear.
