Solar Panels vs. Solar Shingles: Cost, Efficiency, and Installation Compared

Solar panels usually suit a roof in good condition; solar shingles may be worth pricing during a planned roof replacement. Compare equivalent roof and PV scopes, expected production, warranties and total project costs.

Conventional solar panels are usually the simpler choice when your roof is in good condition; solar shingles are worth pricing when you already need a new roof and want the photovoltaic system integrated into it. The cost comparison is not panel price versus shingle price: it is the cost of a panel installation versus the combined cost of a solar roof, or a needed roof replacement plus a panel installation. There is no reliable single current national price or complete, current efficiency comparison for all solar-shingle products, so decide from written proposals for your roof.

What is the difference between solar panels and solar shingles?

Conventional rooftop panels are photovoltaic (PV) modules mounted above a finished roof. The roof remains a separate building component, and the panel system is installed on top of it. Solar shingles, by contrast, incorporate PV cells into roofing products that replace or form part of the roof surface. They generate electricity while also serving as roofing material.

That distinction affects more than appearance. A panel project is primarily an electrical installation attached to a roof; a solar-shingle project also involves roofing work across the areas included in the proposal. The products therefore may differ in how much of the roof is replaced, what structural or electrical work is needed, how the system is laid out, and which warranties apply. Ask the contractor to state exactly what roof area and materials are included rather than relying on a label such as “solar roof.”

Solar shingles can give the roof a more integrated appearance, while conventional panels sit visibly above the roof. Appearance is a legitimate preference, but it does not tell you how much electricity a design will produce or whether its total project cost is competitive.

Which option is likely to cost less?

For a home with a serviceable roof, compare a conventional panel installation with the added cost of doing solar shingles instead of simply keeping that roof. If a roof replacement is already due, compare the solar-shingle proposal with the actual combined cost of a conventional roof replacement and a panel system. The second comparison is the one that accounts for the fact that solar shingles do roofing work as well as generate electricity.

GAF Energy says Timberline Solar costs “comparable to the cost of buying a new roof plus installing traditional solar panels.” That is the manufacturer’s claim, not an independent finding that applies to every home or a guarantee of savings. GAF also says it does not guarantee a level of savings. Treat the statement as a reason to request a roof-specific comparison, not as a substitute for one.

A single dollars-per-watt figure can obscure important differences. A panel quote may not include a roof replacement, while a solar-roof quote may include some or all of the roofing scope. Battery storage, inverters, structural work, electrical work, permits, financing charges and other project costs can further change what is being compared. The U.S. Department of Energy’s PV benchmark approach separates equipment, fieldwork, office work and overhead, among other components; that kind of breakdown is useful when asking bidders to explain a total. Its Q1 2025 benchmark dataset is a model for understanding costs, not a direct quote for a solar-shingle job.

Historical price examples—not current quotes

EnergySage’s comparison page, published in 2023, says its pricing was confirmed in early 2022 and can vary by location. Its figures below are historical examples; they should not be presented as current installed prices or used to predict what a homeowner will pay in 2026.

System or product in EnergySage’s comparison Reported power and efficiency Historical price example
Traditional solar system 170–350 W; 19–23% efficiency $2.86/W; $28,600 for a 10 kW system
Tesla Solar Roof 71.67 W per shingle/cell; approximately 17–20% efficiency $6.40/W; $64,000 for a 10 kW system
SunTegra 105–114 W; 15.9–17.2% efficiency $4.90/W; $49,000 for a 10 kW system
CertainTeed Apollo Tile II 73 W; 17.8% efficiency Approximately below $6.40/W; approximately $64,000 for 10 kW
GAF solar shingles 45 W; efficiency not listed in EnergySage’s table Approximately $4.80/W; $48,000 for 10 kW

These entries are not a like-for-like estimate for a particular house. They are from a historical comparison whose underlying scope and local conditions may not match a current proposal. In particular, the table’s system-level cost examples should not be treated as proof that a solar roof today costs a particular multiple of a panel installation. Obtain current local bids that identify the roof work, PV equipment, storage and other included items separately.

How to compare the totals fairly

  • If the roof is still serviceable, ask for a panel quote that leaves it in place and a solar-shingle quote that identifies any additional roof work.
  • If the roof needs replacement, get a conventional roofing proposal and a panel proposal, then compare their combined cash total with the solar-roof proposal for equivalent roof coverage and PV capacity.
  • Ask each bidder to break out the roof, PV modules or active shingles, inverter, battery, electrical and structural work, permits, and other charges where available.
  • Compare both total cash price and total financed price, including lender or dealer fees. A low advertised payment does not establish a low total project cost.
  • Use cost per watt only for comparable PV scope. Tesla advises subtracting any battery cost before making a panel-system cost-per-watt comparison; do not compare unlike projects by dividing their different total scopes by system capacity.

Which is more efficient, and which produces more electricity?

Efficiency is the fraction of sunlight a PV device converts to electricity under specified conditions. It can help compare modules, but it does not by itself tell you how much electricity a home’s system will generate. Rated system capacity, usable roof area, roof orientation, shading, inverter configuration and local sunlight also affect annual production. A product with a higher efficiency rating is not automatically the better project if its layout, capacity, price or roof coverage differs.

EnergySage’s comparison estimates typical solar shingles at 15–22% efficiency and premium panels at 20–23%. Those are the publisher’s estimates, not a complete set of current, manufacturer-certified specifications. In the same comparison, EnergySage noted that Tesla had not released Solar Roof efficiency data and did not list an efficiency figure for GAF solar shingles. The product-level values in its historical table should be read with those disclosure gaps in mind.

For a meaningful production comparison, request the current product datasheet and a proposal stating system capacity in kilowatts, estimated annual production in kilowatt-hours, and the assumptions used for roof orientation, shade and usable roof planes. Ask bidders to use the same household usage assumptions and to explain differences in the modeled roof layout. Tesla notes that an appropriate system size depends on household energy use, sunlight exposure and panel efficiency; a quoted system size without its production assumptions is not enough to assess fit.

What does installation involve, and when does the roof matter?

Panels are mounted above the existing roof, so an otherwise suitable roof may not need replacement as part of the solar project. Integrated PV roofing products replace or form part of the roofing surface, so the contractor’s roofing scope matters. If replacement is already planned, coordinating roof and solar decisions can make a solar-shingle quote worth considering. If the roof is sound, include the cost and disruption of unnecessary roofing work when evaluating an integrated system.

Either route involves more than attaching a product. A project can require construction and electrical work, permitting, inspections and approval from the utility before the system can operate or export electricity. Requirements differ by location. Confirm with the installer which approvals it will obtain, which are your responsibility, and whether its schedule depends on permit or utility review.

Do not infer a universal installation time from small project samples. A 2023 National Laboratory of the Rockies report examined integrated PV installations, including costs, processes, installation times and possible barriers. Its reported observations covered two California reroofing sites totaling 20.52 kW and the equivalent of nine new-construction sites totaling 71.75 kW, alongside 15 expert interviews. Those cases provide context about the work, but they do not establish how long a project elsewhere will take.

Roof, warranties and workmanship

Before signing, establish which contractor is responsible for each layer of the job: roof preparation and weatherproofing, PV equipment, electrical work, inspections and any repair if a roof or system issue arises. Compare the actual written terms for product, performance, roof, workmanship and labor coverage. A warranty may cover equipment but not the labor to diagnose, remove or reinstall it; Tesla specifically notes that labor coverage varies among warranties. Ask who performs covered work and what happens if the installer is no longer available.

Are solar shingles worth it?

They are most worth pricing when a roof replacement is already part of the plan, the integrated appearance matters to you, and a local qualified installer can supply a clear proposal for the roof and electrical scope. Their appeal is weaker if the roof is in good condition and the added roofing work costs more than the value you place on integration. The right answer depends on the written totals and expected production for the same home, not a general claim that either format always saves more.

Market adoption is not a substitute for that household comparison. A National Laboratory of the Rockies report published in 2023 attributed 94% of U.S. residential integrated-roofing-and-PV capacity installed in 2022 to Tesla Solar Roof and 3% to GAF Energy Timberline Solar. Those are historical shares of installed capacity in that category and year, not current market shares, nor an endorsement of either product.

How to evaluate solar proposals

Ask every bidder to answer the same questions in writing. This makes it easier to find a scope difference hiding behind an attractive headline price and gives you a practical basis for comparing a panel system with integrated roofing.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Define the roof scope. Record whether the proposal keeps the existing roof, replaces only selected sections or covers a full roof replacement. Request the roof material and work included, plus the price of any optional roofing work.
  2. Separate project costs. Request itemized costs for roof work, PV modules or active shingles, inverter, battery, electrical and structural work, permits and other charges where available. Ask for total cash price and total financed price, with any financing or dealer fees shown.
  3. Match system size and production. Compare system capacity in kW and estimated annual production in kWh. Ask for the assumptions about roof orientation, shade, usable roof planes and inverter configuration, and have bidders explain material differences.
  4. Normalize cost per watt carefully. Compare only equivalent PV scope and capacity. Identify whether storage is included and remove its cost before comparing panel-system prices on a cost-per-watt basis, as Tesla advises. Do not divide a solar-roof total that includes roofing by PV watts and treat it as equivalent to a panel-only figure.
  5. Review warranty coverage. Compare product, performance, roof, workmanship and labor terms separately. Confirm who handles service calls, whether labor and removal or reinstallation are covered, and how roofing repairs interact with the PV warranty.
  6. Confirm local rules and economics. Ask the utility or installer about export-credit rules and any limits on sending surplus power to the grid. GAF notes that incentives vary by state and that compensation for excess electricity depends on local net-metering policy. Verify current incentives with the relevant authority rather than assuming a national amount or eligibility.
  7. Verify delivery details. Confirm the proposed products are available for your address, who will perform the work, roof compatibility, installer service coverage, permit and inspection responsibilities, and the approvals required by your utility.

Common comparison mistakes

  • Comparing a roof-and-solar total with a panel-only price. Add the conventional roof replacement cost when one is genuinely needed, or keep it out of both sides when it is not.
  • Treating a historical example as a current quote. EnergySage’s price figures were confirmed in early 2022 and published in a comparison in 2023; they do not establish current prices.
  • Assuming higher efficiency means higher bill savings. Annual production depends on system size and site conditions as well as efficiency. Compare modeled kWh output and its assumptions.
  • Counting a battery as solar generation equipment. Storage changes project scope and price. Identify its separate cost before making cost-per-watt comparisons.
  • Assuming permits, credits or incentives are the same everywhere. Requirements, utility export compensation and available incentives are location-dependent and may change. Get current answers for your address.
  • Reading a warranty headline as a full service promise. Check whether labor and roof-related work are covered, not only the equipment itself.

What is not established by the available comparisons?

There is no established single current national installed price for solar shingles, no complete current efficiency comparison across manufacturers, and no universal answer on product availability, warranty terms, incentives, permitting or utility credits. Those details can vary by product, location, project design and time. A homeowner should rely on current manufacturer specifications, local authorities and utility rules, and written proposals for the actual roof. A licensed tax professional can advise on tax treatment for an individual household; this comparison does not establish eligibility or the amount of any current tax credit.
