To buy Amazon stock, open a brokerage account available in your country, choose a cash or margin account, deposit funds, search for Amazon.com, Inc. or ticker AMZN, select an order type, and confirm the trade. Amazon’s common stock trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under AMZN, according to its 2025 Form 10-K. The exact account rules, investor protections, taxes, fees, fractional-share access and market availability depend on your country, broker and circumstances.
What Amazon stock is—and what AMZN means
Amazon.com, Inc. is a publicly traded company whose common stock trades on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol AMZN. The company states this listing in its 2025 Form 10-K filed with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC): “Our common stock is traded on the Nasdaq Global Select Market under the symbol ‘AMZN.’”

When you buy AMZN, you are buying an ownership interest in one company. You are not buying Amazon’s products, a guaranteed income stream or a diversified portfolio. The share price can rise or fall, and you can lose some or all of the money you invest. A ticker symbol identifies the security; it does not indicate whether the stock is cheap, safe or suitable for you.
Amazon’s filing describes business uncertainties such as economic conditions, customer demand and spending, competition, technology and cloud-market developments, operating execution, and legal or regulatory proceedings. Those are risks disclosed by the issuer, not a forecast of what the stock will do.

Amazon reported that common shares outstanding plus shares underlying outstanding stock awards totaled 11.0 billion as of December 31, 2025. That is a company-reported share-count figure from the filing, not an estimate of an individual investor’s return or ownership percentage.
What you need before placing an AMZN order
- A permitted brokerage account: The broker must serve your country or state and offer access to the market on which AMZN trades.
- Money for the purchase: A cash account requires you to pay in full. A margin account can borrow against securities, but borrowing creates interest expense and additional loss risks.
- Identity and financial information: Brokers commonly request information needed to open and operate an account. The exact requirements vary by jurisdiction and firm.
- A plan for risk: Decide how a single-company position fits with your other savings and investments before submitting an order.
Residents outside the United States should confirm whether they can buy a U.S.-listed stock, how currency conversion works, what investor protections apply, and how dividends or sales are taxed. The SEC’s U.S.-focused guidance does not replace rules from your local regulator or tax authority.
How to buy Amazon stock, step by step
1. Compare a brokerage and read its disclosures
A brokerage is the intermediary that receives your instruction and routes it for execution. Do not choose solely because an app advertises low trading costs. Compare the account agreement, commissions and other account or transaction costs, funding and withdrawal rules, available order types, currency-conversion charges where relevant, and the service’s access to U.S. securities.

For a U.S. broker, the SEC recommends reading the firm’s relationship summary, called Form CRS, and checking its background and disciplinary history before opening an account. The SEC’s Investor Bulletin: How to Open a Brokerage Account explains this review. A broker’s registration, legal entity, dispute process and protection scheme can differ from those of an affiliated banking or cash-management service.
There is no universal “best” broker. The right choice depends on your location, account needs, costs, currency, research tools, order controls and the protections available to you.
2. Open the account and select its type deliberately
During the application, look for the account-type choice rather than accepting a preselected option. The SEC warns that some applications make margin the default. If you do not want to borrow, confirm that the account is set up as cash.

Read the broker’s margin agreement even if you initially plan to use only your own cash. The agreement can explain when interest begins, how collateral is valued and what the firm may do during a shortfall. Rules and terminology differ by country.

3. Fund the account and check the available balance
Transfer money using a funding method the broker supports. Wait until the platform shows funds available for the type of trade you intend to place; a displayed account balance may not always mean that money is immediately available for every transaction. Check transfer limits, settlement timing, currency conversion and any funding charge in the account terms.
Do not borrow outside the account merely to make a stock purchase unless you understand the separate costs and risks. If you are using a cash account, make sure the amount needed for the order and any applicable fee is available before submitting.
4. Find and verify the security
Use the broker’s search box to enter AMZN or Amazon.com, Inc. Before continuing, verify the issuer name, ticker, exchange and security description shown by the broker. Similar names, depositary receipts, options and other instruments can appear in search results. The company’s filing identifies the ordinary common stock as AMZN on Nasdaq Global Select Market.
If the platform shows a currency, trading session or venue, make sure it matches what you intend to trade. A foreign-listed instrument that references the same company may have different costs, liquidity, trading hours, custody arrangements and tax treatment.
5. Choose the order type
The two basic choices for a straightforward purchase are a market order and a buy limit order. Read your broker’s definitions because available instructions, time-in-force choices and handling can differ.

A market order is not a promise that you will receive the number shown as the last price. A limit order provides price control, not execution certainty. The SEC explains these distinctions in Understanding Order Types (updated August 18, 2026) and Types of Orders.
6. Review every field before submitting

- Issuer and ticker: Amazon.com, Inc., AMZN.
- Action: buy.
- Quantity: the number of whole or fractional shares, if your broker supports fractional trading.
- Order type: market or buy limit, with the limit price entered correctly if applicable.
- Estimated total: purchase amount plus any disclosed commission, fee or currency-conversion cost.
- Account: the intended cash or margin account.
- Duration or other instructions: confirm what the broker selected and what it means.
When the details are correct, submit the order once. Online investing is not an instantaneous direct connection to a stock exchange. The broker receives the instruction, selects an execution venue and sends the order onward. The quote can change while that happens. The SEC describes this process in Executing an Order.

After submitting, open the order or activity screen and check whether it is filled, partially filled, open, rejected or canceled. Record the execution price, number of shares and time shown by the broker. A market order can fill at more than one price; a limit order can remain open.
If you decide to cancel an open order, use the broker’s cancel command and verify that the status changed to canceled before entering a replacement. Submitting a second order while the first is still active can result in buying more shares than intended. The SEC’s Online Investing guidance covers checking order and cancellation status and the payment obligations associated with cash accounts.
How much money do you need to buy AMZN?
The amount depends on the current market price, the number of shares, your broker’s minimums and whether fractional shares are available. The supplied evidence does not establish a current AMZN price, a universal minimum investment or a universal fractional-share policy, so do not rely on a fixed figure.
Ask the specific broker:
- Whether it permits fractional AMZN shares and whether fractional orders use market-only pricing or other restrictions.
- Whether it imposes a minimum dollar amount or share quantity.
- How it handles dividends, corporate actions and transfers for fractional holdings.
- Whether a partial-share position can be transferred to another firm or must be sold.
If only whole shares are available, you need enough settled purchasing power for at least one share plus applicable costs. Never infer the required amount from an old quote or from another broker’s display.

Trading cost is more than a headline commission. The SEC identifies commissions and other account or transaction costs and notes that they vary among broker-dealers. Review the current schedule for:
- Commissions or per-trade charges.
- Account maintenance, inactivity, transfer, statement or withdrawal fees.
- Currency conversion and foreign-exchange spreads for non-U.S. investors.
- Margin interest if you borrow.
- Any fee attached to fractional trading, real-time quotes or special order handling.
Execution quality also matters. A broker may route orders to different venues, and routing choices can affect transaction cost. A quote displayed on your screen is not a locked purchase price. Compare the broker’s routing and execution disclosures where available, rather than assuming that two platforms with the same advertised commission produce identical results.

Fractional shares: what is and is not established
Fractional trading lets an investor buy less than one whole share, but availability is a broker-specific feature rather than a universal attribute of AMZN. The reviewed sources do not establish which brokers currently offer fractional Amazon shares, what minimums they use or which order types they accept. Confirm the rules directly with the broker serving your jurisdiction.
Fractional ownership can change how orders, voting rights, dividends, transfers and corporate actions work. Read the firm’s fractional-share disclosure before assuming that a partial position has exactly the same treatment as a whole share.

Single-stock risk and diversification
Buying only AMZN concentrates your exposure in one issuer. Amazon’s results and market value can be affected by company execution, competition, consumer spending, economic conditions, technology changes, cloud-market developments and legal or regulatory outcomes. Even a financially strong company can have a declining stock price.
Diversification means spreading money among investments with differing risks and return characteristics. The SEC discusses diversification and investment-product risks in Investment Products and its Stocks – FAQs. Diversification does not eliminate losses, but it can reduce the effect of one company’s problems on an entire portfolio.
Before buying, consider whether your emergency savings, debt payments, retirement objectives, time horizon and tolerance for a large price decline are already addressed. This is a decision framework, not a recommendation to buy or avoid AMZN.
Cash account or margin account: which fits a first purchase?
For a beginner who wants to purchase shares without borrowing, a cash account is the simpler structure: the trade is funded with your money and does not create margin interest. It still exposes you to stock-market losses and to the cash-account payment and settlement rules that apply in your jurisdiction.
A margin account is a borrowing facility, not a requirement for owning Amazon shares. It can increase purchasing power, but interest reduces returns and a falling portfolio can trigger a demand for additional funds or a forced sale. A broker may sell securities without asking you to choose which holding to liquidate first, subject to its agreement and applicable rules. Select margin only after reading the agreement and understanding those consequences.
Common problems and how to resolve them
The search returns several Amazon-related securities
Stop and compare the issuer, ticker, exchange, security type and currency. Select the common stock identified as AMZN on Nasdaq Global Select Market if that is the exposure you intended. Do not assume that an option, fund, depositary receipt or similarly named instrument is equivalent.
Your market order filled at an unexpected price
Review the execution report and the time submitted. Market orders prioritize execution rather than a guaranteed price, and the quote can move while the broker routes the instruction. For future trades, consider whether a buy limit order’s price ceiling is more important to you than guaranteed execution; a limit order can remain unfilled.
Your limit order has not filled
Check the limit price, order duration, market status and whether the order is still open. The market may never have reached your maximum price. Do not submit a duplicate until you have confirmed the original order’s status.
The broker rejected or restricted the order
Read the rejection message and contact the broker if it is unclear. Possible explanations include insufficient available funds, an unsupported order type, an account restriction, market-hours rules, identity verification, security eligibility or a jurisdictional limitation. Only the broker can confirm the reason for a specific account.
You cannot find fractional-share settings
Look in the broker’s order ticket, help center and fractional-trading disclosure. If the feature is absent, ask whether whole-share orders are required and how any small cash balance is handled. Do not assume another broker’s fractional-share rules apply.
A practical AMZN purchase checklist
- Confirm that your country and account type permit access to the U.S.-listed AMZN security.
- Review the brokerage’s Form CRS or equivalent disclosure, background, disciplinary history, fees and order types.
- Choose cash or margin intentionally; do not leave an unwanted margin default selected.
- Deposit enough available funds and understand currency-conversion and settlement rules.
- Search for Amazon.com, Inc. and verify ticker AMZN, exchange and security type.
- Decide whether execution priority or a maximum price matters more to you.
- Enter the share quantity or dollar amount, then check fees, account and order instructions.
- Submit once, monitor the status and save the execution details.
- If canceling, verify cancellation before entering a replacement order.
- Keep the position’s single-company risk in the context of your broader financial plan.
What buying AMZN does not guarantee
- It does not guarantee a profit, dividend or recovery after a price decline.
- It does not guarantee that a market order will receive the displayed quote.
- It does not guarantee that a limit order will execute.
- It does not guarantee fractional-share access, a minimum investment amount or identical protections across brokers.
- It does not remove the need to consider taxes, currency, investor-protection rules and reporting obligations in your country.
Use the broker’s current documents and your local regulator or tax authority for rules that depend on your residence, account, transaction date or tax status.
