Short answer: a panel’s efficiency rating is a laboratory conversion figure, not a promise of how much electricity your home will receive. Real-world energy yield changes with cell temperature, shade, sunlight, dirt, orientation, equipment, age and downtime. Heat usually reduces power, shade can cut production by a highly variable amount, module capability typically declines by about 0.5% per year as a general DOE/FEMP figure, and a photovoltaic (PV) system is commonly described as lasting 20–30 years. A separate Berkeley Lab industry survey cited by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) found average operational panel lifespans of 25–35 years in 2025, up from around 20 years in 2007. Neither figure guarantees the life or output of an individual installation.

What does a solar-panel efficiency rating actually measure?

Efficiency is a conversion ratio

Panel or cell efficiency is the percentage of sunlight striking a photovoltaic device that is converted into usable electricity under defined standard test conditions. It lets manufacturers and buyers compare modules on a common basis. It does not mean that the panel will convert that percentage of all sunlight reaching your roof over an entire year.

For a household, the more useful question is usually energy yield: how many kilowatt-hours the system produces at a particular site over a day, month or year. Yield includes the amount of sunlight available, the module temperature, shade, dirt, roof orientation and tilt, inverter and wiring performance, system design, age and periods when equipment is offline. DOE guidance explicitly distinguishes this site-level yield from laboratory efficiency.

Why a higher-rated module is not automatically the best financial choice

A higher-efficiency module can produce more power from a given roof area, which matters when usable space is limited. But annual energy and value also depend on the roof’s solar resource, shade pattern, layout, inverter sizing, installation quality and local electricity economics. A lower-rated module in a better-exposed area can outperform a higher-rated module placed in shade. Compare a site-specific production estimate, not only the percentage printed on a datasheet.

Do solar panels become less efficient in heat?

Why output generally falls as cells get hotter

Yes. Higher cell temperatures generally cause a small increase in electrical current but a much larger decrease in voltage. Because power depends on both current and voltage, the voltage loss normally dominates and output falls as the cells heat. The DOE Solar Energy Technologies Office summarizes the principle this way: “Solar cells generally work best at low temperatures.”

This does not mean a panel stops working on a warm day. It means that, with the same incoming sunlight, a hot cell normally delivers less power than a cooler cell. Do not apply a universal percentage loss to every installation. The correct calculation requires the module’s temperature coefficient, the actual cell temperature and the operating conditions used for the estimate.

Cell temperature is not the same as air temperature

A weather app’s air temperature is only a rough indicator. Sunlight itself heats the module, while wind and the way the panel is mounted affect how readily heat escapes. Roof-integrated construction, open-rack mounting, roof color and airflow can all produce different cell temperatures in the same outdoor air. A production model that uses measured or modeled module temperature is more informative than comparing output with air temperature alone.

When heat becomes a durability concern

DOE notes that extreme temperatures can damage cell and module materials and shorten operating life. Repeated heat stress may contribute to failures such as hot spots, delamination or other material damage, but a warm season by itself does not prove that a panel has been damaged. Look for a sustained, unexplained change in monitored production or visible damage rather than judging from one hot afternoon.

How much does shading reduce solar-panel output?

There is no single percentage for every roof

Shade removes part of the solar resource reaching the array, so it reduces energy yield. The amount depends on how much of which modules or cells are shaded, the time of day and season, and the array’s electrical design. A brief shadow over a small area is a different problem from a neighboring tree covering several modules for hours every winter morning. The evidence does not support one universal “shade loss” percentage.

Common sources include trees, chimneys, vents, neighboring buildings and seasonal vegetation growth. A roof that looks clear in summer can have a very different exposure in winter when the sun is lower and deciduous trees may be bare. DOE homeowner guidance warns that excessive tree cover can make a roof unsuitable for solar.

Check shade before installing

Ask for a site and shade assessment that shows exposure across the year, not just a photograph taken on the installation date. The production estimate should state its assumptions about roof planes, usable area, orientation, tilt, shading and expected annual yield. If trees are on another person’s property, confirm ownership, permission and local rules before assuming they can be pruned or removed. Tree work also carries safety risks around roofs and electrical lines.

Diagnose shade on an existing system

Compare the affected hours and seasons with the system’s modeled production. A monitoring graph that shows a repeatable dip when a tree or structure casts a shadow is stronger evidence than a single low bill. Also check whether the same pattern appears across the whole array or only one string or module group; a localized decline can point to a design or equipment issue rather than general weather.

Choosing a mitigation path

No shade remedy eliminates the sunlight that an object blocks. The practical choice depends on the timing and duration of shade, the area affected, tree growth and ownership constraints, roof orientation and usable area, the existing electrical design, expected annual yield change, cost and safety. Module-level electronics may help manage mismatch in some designs, but they do not create sunlight or guarantee that all shade losses disappear. A qualified designer should model the proposed change before work begins.

Situation to evaluate Questions that affect the decision
Tree or vegetation shade How many hours and which seasons are affected? Will growth increase the shaded area? Who owns the tree, and is pruning or removal permitted and safe?
Building, chimney or vent shade Which modules are shaded, at what times, and can the roof layout use a less-obstructed area?
Electrical design Are shaded modules on the same string or array section? Would a redesign change modeled annual yield, and is the equipment compatible?
Any proposed intervention What annual production change is modeled, what work is required, and what are the installation and safety implications?

How quickly do solar panels degrade?

The commonly cited rate

The DOE Federal Energy Management Program (FEMP) states: “Age: PV module efficiency unavoidably degrades at about 0.5% per year.” Treat this as an approximate general figure, not a warranty term or a prediction for your particular panel. Weather, solar resource, operating conditions, installation quality and component faults can make an individual system’s trend different.

Degradation is a gradual reduction in capability. It is not the same as a sudden production drop caused by shade, dirt, unusual weather, inverter trouble, wiring damage, module damage or downtime. A sharp change should therefore trigger diagnosis rather than an assumption that normal aging is responsible.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Failures that can look like degradation

FEMP identifies module damage such as hot spots, cell cracks, water intrusion and delamination, along with inverter and wiring problems, as possible causes of poor performance. A failed inverter can make an otherwise healthy array produce no energy, while a wiring fault can affect one section. Dirt or a new obstruction can create a seasonal or reversible decline. These conditions require different remedies from ordinary age-related loss.

Use a performance ratio instead of comparing raw bills

FEMP defines performance ratio as actual production divided by modeled production using the same measured solar-resource and temperature data over the selected period, while accounting for system age. This comparison is more useful than comparing two unadjusted electricity bills or two sunny days. Keep monitoring records by month and year, and retain the production model so later results can be evaluated against the assumptions used at installation.

How long do solar panels and complete PV systems last?

Two different lifespan figures answer two different questions

Measure Reported figure What it describes Important qualification
PV system lifespan 20–30 years DOE/FEMP guidance for photovoltaic systems A general system-lifespan description, not a promise that every component or the original output lasts unchanged for that period.
Average operational panel lifespan Around 20 years in 2007; 25–35 years in 2025 Average reported by a Berkeley Lab survey of U.S. solar industry professionals, cited by DOE in 2025 A survey average for panels, not a warranty or an individual-panel prediction.

The figures are not interchangeable. One describes a PV system; the other reports a survey average for operating panels. DOE’s end-of-life page states: “A Berkeley Lab survey of U.S. solar industry professionals shows that the average operational lifespan of a solar panel has increased from around 20 years in 2007 to 25-35 years in 2025.” Neither statement means output remains at its original rating until a specific birthday.

What can shorten or extend useful operation?

Inverters, wiring and other balance-of-system components can require attention or replacement on a different schedule from the modules. Weather exposure, moisture, installation quality, maintenance, repairability and the availability of compatible replacement equipment all affect whether a system continues operating economically. A panel can remain physically present while producing less than its original capacity, and a system can be taken offline by a non-panel component.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Warranty documents should be read separately from lifespan estimates. A warranty may cover specified materials, workmanship or power performance for defined terms and conditions; it does not convert a population average into a guarantee for your roof.

How can you tell whether your solar panels are working efficiently?

Use a consistent, evidence-based check rather than judging by a single day’s generation.

  1. Check the monitoring portal. Record daily or monthly energy, inverter status and any alerts. Note whether the issue affects the entire array or one section.
  2. Compare with the site model. Use the original production estimate or a current model that includes the same roof orientation, shade assumptions and equipment.
  3. Adjust for conditions. Compare periods with corresponding sunlight and temperature data. Account for seasonal changes, storms and unusual weather before calling a difference degradation.
  4. Look for new external causes. Check from a safe ground position for growing trees, new construction, dirt accumulation or visible obstructions. Do not climb onto the roof or handle electrical equipment to investigate.
  5. Review equipment and downtime. Inverter alerts, communication gaps, tripped protection, wiring faults or maintenance outages can reduce recorded energy without indicating a panel-efficiency change.
  6. Arrange qualified service when the decline persists. Give the technician monitoring history, model assumptions and the dates of alerts. Do not open energized equipment or infer that the modules need replacement before a professional diagnosis.

A useful trend is a repeated difference between actual and modeled production after solar resource, temperature, age and downtime are considered. The panel’s nameplate efficiency alone cannot establish whether a household system is performing well.

What should you ask before buying or changing a system?

  • Which efficiency value is being quoted, and under what test conditions?
  • What annual energy yield is modeled for this roof, including shade, orientation, temperature and expected losses?
  • How will seasonal tree growth and nearby structures affect exposure?
  • Which module and inverter temperature coefficients are used in the estimate?
  • How will production be monitored, and can you export historical data?
  • What are the separate warranty terms for modules, inverters, workmanship and power performance?
  • What inspection and service process applies if output falls unexpectedly?

These questions keep conversion efficiency, energy yield, degradation, component reliability and lifespan from being treated as one interchangeable number.
