NASA/JPL’s Eyes on the Solar System is a closely matching official example: JPL describes it as a web-based visualization using real NASA mission data, with controls for space and time. The available official material does not establish that a separate product named SOLAR is the same tool.
What can you explore in a browser-based 3D solar system?
JPL’s current Apps directory describes Eyes on the Solar System as a 3D solar-system visualization populated with real NASA mission data. It invites visitors to ride along with an asteroid or Voyager and says users can control space and time in the web-based experience.

That makes Eyes a useful official example of the kind of experience suggested by this title, not proof that it is the product called SOLAR. JPL’s September 2, 2011 launch announcement described an earlier version with models of planets, moons, asteroids, comets, and spacecraft, and a then-stated data range from 1950 to 2050. Those details describe the launch-era release; they should not be treated as current requirements or current date limits.
What does “real JPL orbits” mean?
JPL’s Horizons system is an ephemeris and solar-system data service. It provides object locations and motion over time, along with information about observability, and can generate vectors or osculating orbital elements. An ephemeris is a calculated description of an object’s position or motion at specified times; it is not, by itself, a live view from a spacecraft.

The Horizons manual, version 4.98e dated August 25, 2026, lists holdings of more than 1,560,000 asteroids, 4,075 comets, 461 natural satellites, all planets, the Sun, and 253 spacecraft. These are the manual’s listed counts, not independently verified totals. Its outputs and object coverage make Horizons relevant to understanding the kinds of data behind solar-system visualization, but the available sources do not establish that a product named SOLAR uses Horizons or any particular data pipeline.
Does a spacecraft marker show its live GPS position?
No—not on the basis of “real JPL data” alone. JPL explicitly says spacecraft trajectories in Horizons are not relayed in real time like GPS data; updates may occur weekly or monthly. A visualization can show a mission’s data-based trajectory while still not showing the spacecraft’s instantaneous position.

Timing also depends on the object. JPL advises users to check the relevant Horizons time span rather than assume every object has coverage for every date. For small bodies, the manual notes that orbit solutions can be superseded when new observations arrive, and some solutions may not be adequate for high-precision work over a selected time interval.
How do you use JPL Horizons for a more precise answer?
For a particular object and time, use Horizons rather than infer precision from a 3D display. JPL offers browser, API, command-line, and email access through the Horizons service. The API documentation, version 1.3 (June 2025), describes configurable requests and advises checking the returned version field for format changes.

- Open the Horizons service page and choose an access route suited to your task.
- Specify the target and the time span you need; confirm that the object’s available span covers those dates.
- Choose the appropriate output, such as vectors or orbital elements, and review the result’s qualifications before using it for precision work.
- If using the API, follow the API documentation and inspect the response’s
versionvalue when processing output.
Horizons is a best-effort public service, not an uninterrupted-access guarantee. JPL describes historically typical uptime above 99.9% while advising users with critical needs to allow for outages; that historical description is not a current uptime promise.
