It does not create a new token that holders must swap into: Solana says existing token instructions, wallets, and applications remain compatible. The important exception for builders is that Solana flags indexing changes as required. P-token is also separate from Token-2022.
What does “replaced in place” mean?
Solana changed the code used by the existing SPL Token Program rather than introducing a new token asset and asking users to migrate balances. Solana Foundation describes P-token as “a drop-in code replacement for the existing SPL Token Program” in its August 21, 2025 article.

In other words, the change is to the program implementation, not a swap of each holder’s tokens into a successor asset. Solana’s upgrade announcement says the existing instruction set remains compatible and labels the upgrade as having no breaking change.

Is P-token live on Mainnet Beta?
Yes. The Solana Explorer feature-gate record lists “SIMD-0266: Efficient Token program” as active on Mainnet Beta, with activation at slot 419,472,000 in Epoch 971. Solana’s upgrade page also describes mainnet activation as completed.

Do SPL token holders need to migrate?
No user-facing token migration is described as necessary. Solana says existing token interactions continue to work and that wallets and DeFi applications are expected to keep working with the compatible instruction set. That statement concerns the program upgrade; it does not mean every surrounding service has identical indexing or data-handling requirements.
What should developers and indexers check?
Solana marks “Indexing Changes Required? Yes” on its upgrade page. The announcement does not identify specific indexer providers, give an adoption schedule, or establish readiness for any particular integration. Developers should therefore check the indexing behavior relevant to their own stack rather than assume all infrastructure is unaffected.

Is P-token the same as Token-2022?
No. P-token is the optimized implementation of the original SPL Token Program. Token-2022 is a separate program, often called the Token Extensions Program, with its own program identity and selection path. Both support common token operations such as creating mints and accounts, transferring, managing authorities, burning, closing, freezing, and thawing; shared functionality does not make them the same program. See Solana’s SPL Token Basics.
The distinction also appears in the CLI. Solana’s SPL Token CLI Reference says the original Token Program remains the default, while Token-2022 is selected with --program-2022. A command will fail if the selected program does not own the supplied address. P-token should not be mistaken for a command to migrate an address or asset to Token-2022.

What performance improvement does Solana report?
Solana Foundation’s April 2026 upgrade page reports 95–98% fewer compute units across the displayed token-operation comparisons and 10% more total block space. These are Solana’s published figures, not independent benchmark results.

These values describe the examples shown by Solana; they should not be treated as a guarantee that every transaction will use those exact amounts. The published page presents the efficiency figures as benefits of the optimized implementation.

What does SIMD-0266 identify?
SIMD-0266 is the Solana feature gate associated with replacing the current SPL Token Program implementation with a compute-unit-optimized one. The feature-gate record shows its Mainnet Beta activation, while Solana’s upgrade announcement explains the compatibility and indexing implications.
