Start with the exact symptom: a slow download, an update error, a game that Steam thinks is uninstalled, and a game that will not launch have different likely causes. Record the game name and full error message, restart Steam and your computer, then follow the matching steps below. Avoid deleting game folders or disabling antivirus protection as first-line fixes.
When a game will not download, update, or install
For “An error occurred while updating [game title]” or a stalled installation, begin with Steam’s general update and installation troubleshooting guide. Restart Steam and the computer. If that does not help, work through the following targeted checks.

- Clear the download cache: In Steam, open Steam > Settings > Downloads > Clear Download Cache. Steam says this can help with games that will not download or start and does not remove installed games. You will need to sign in again, so make sure you know your login details first. See Steam’s download-cache instructions.
- Repair the library folder: In Steam’s storage or library settings, use the repair option for the library that contains the game. This can help if Steam cannot write to that location.
- Try another nearby download region: Open Steam > Settings > Downloads and choose a different region, then retry. Steam says a region’s servers can be slow, overloaded, or affected by hardware failures; no single region is best for everyone.
- Check storage and security software: Confirm that the library drive has free space and that Steam can write to its folder. Security software can interfere with downloads or installation. Check its alerts or quarantine rather than turning off protection broadly.
- Test another drive only if practical: If the library may be unwritable or the drive is faulty, a different library location can help distinguish a location problem from a Steam or game issue.
Steam’s installation guidance warns that uninstalling Steam deletes game content. Its reinstall guidance says installing Steam to the existing location can preserve installed games; do not remove Steam or its folders casually.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsWhen downloads are slow or Steam says servers are unavailable
If Steam reports “Steam Servers Are Currently Unavailable or Too Busy,” first try a different, relatively nearby download region as described above. If the problem remains, check the local connection and restart network hardware such as the router; Steam notes that network hardware can slow down or stop working properly after extended operation. Its server troubleshooting guide and client troubleshooting guidance cover these checks.

- Review firewall and security-software rules that may block Steam.
- Retry after changing the download region; do not assume a particular region or a service-wide outage is the cause.
When Steam says an installed game is uninstalled
If Steam offers to install a game you already have, do not delete its folder. Check whether the files are still present in the library location Steam expects. If they are in another Steam library, add that folder through Steam’s Storage Manager so the client can recognize it. Follow Steam’s installed-games troubleshooting steps.
External drives can disconnect or cause performance problems, so Steam does not recommend them for game libraries. A forced shutdown while Steam is writing to disk can also corrupt library information; allow Steam to finish disk activity before shutting down when possible.

When a game crashes, has missing content, or will not launch
Verify the game’s files
For a crash, missing content, or a launch failure without a more specific error, verify that game’s installation: right-click it in the Steam library, choose Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. Steam’s file-verification guide says the check can take several minutes. Do not run it for multiple games at once or during other system-intensive work such as a virus scan or disk defragmentation.
It is normal for one or more files to fail verification in many games. Steam says these are often local configuration files that should not be replaced. A verification result is not, by itself, proof that the game installation is unusable.

For “Games do not run after ‘Preparing to Launch’”
Steam’s Preparing to Launch guidance recommends updating the operating system and drivers, verifying game files, and temporarily closing non-essential software that might interfere. Also check that the game supports your operating system and that your computer meets the game’s system requirements.
Compatibility depends on the game and the computer’s hardware and software configuration. On Linux, Proton does not guarantee that every Windows game will work; if a game lacks native Linux support, check that game’s Proton discussion for title-specific compatibility reports. If the general checks do not resolve a game-specific failure, contact the developer.

When Steam says the game is already running
The exact message “Failed to start game (app already running)” can appear after a silent crash or when a game process did not close cleanly. On Windows, open Task Manager and look for the game process. End it if it is still running, then try again. If no process appears or the message persists, restart the computer. Steam’s app-already-running guide also suggests verifying the game files if necessary. If you use the Steam beta client, test the regular client to see whether the issue is specific to the beta.

“Failed to Start Game (Missing Executable)” can mean that a security product quarantined or blocked a file, or that a download failed or a file became corrupted. Check your antivirus or security product’s quarantine and alerts. Only restore or allowlist a file after confirming it is legitimate; do not disable antivirus protection across the system.

Then restart Steam and verify the game’s files using Properties > Installed Files > Verify integrity of game files. If the message remains, contact Steam Support and include the diagnostic information it requests. See Steam’s missing-executable troubleshooting page.
When Steam says “This game is currently unavailable”
Restart Steam, update your drivers, and verify the game files. If the error continues, check network configuration. Some games run prerequisite installers the first time they launch, including components such as DirectX or Visual C++; an installer that was canceled or blocked can prevent startup. Steam’s unavailable-game guide covers this scenario. Any manual prerequisite installation is game-specific, so use the game developer’s instructions or support rather than downloading components from an unverified source.
Choose the next check by the clue in the error
| What you see | Start with | What it helps distinguish |
|---|---|---|
| Download or update fails | Restart Steam, clear the download cache, repair the library folder, try another nearby region | Client cache, writable library, or regional download-server issue |
| Download is slow or servers are unavailable | Try another region; check the connection, router, firewall, and security software | Local network or security interference versus a region-specific server problem |
| Game is marked uninstalled but files remain | Check the expected library location and add the alternate library in Storage Manager | Whether Steam can locate the existing installation |
| Missing content or general launch failure | Verify the affected game’s files | Whether installed files match Steam’s expected files |
| “App already running” | Check for a lingering process; restart if needed | A game process that did not close after a crash |
| “Missing Executable” | Check security quarantine, then verify files | A blocked or quarantined executable versus a failed or corrupted download |
| “Preparing to Launch” or unavailable game | Check OS, drivers, requirements, platform support, interfering software, and prerequisites as relevant | Compatibility or a title-specific dependency rather than a download-region issue |
If the same failure affects several games, prioritize Steam, the library, security software, or the network. If it affects only one title, file verification and the game developer’s support are more directly relevant. Steam’s guides are general procedures, not a universal diagnosis for every system.
