Solana Transaction Dropped With No Error: The Seven Doors to Check

A Solana transaction that seems to vanish without an error is one whose outcome the app never saw. Here are the seven gaps to check, in order, with the signature lookups and safe retry rules that resolve them.

Solana has no protocol state called “dropped with no error.” When a transaction seems to vanish, the application has simply never observed its outcome. The gap usually sits in one of seven places between submission and confirmation. This framework is an editorial troubleshooting method, not an official Solana classification. Work through the doors in order, beginning with the signature, because it is the only handle that lets you ask the cluster what happened.

Start with what an accepted transaction actually means

The most common misreading is treating a successful submission as a successful transaction. sendTransaction submits a signed transaction and returns its first signature if the RPC node accepts it. Solana’s documentation is explicit that “a successful response from this method does not guarantee the transaction is processed or confirmed by the cluster.” The response means the node took the transaction, nothing more.

That is why the signature matters more than the spinner. Store it at the moment of submission, along with the cluster and the RPC URL, and treat every later question as a question about that signature.

The seven doors

Door 1: The RPC accepted the transaction, but the cluster has not confirmed it

This is the normal state for a short window after submission. An application that marks an order as paid on the strength of the send response has skipped the confirmation step. Check the signature with getSignatureStatuses and read both confirmationStatus and err. A status with no error and a confirmation level at or above your requirement is the only evidence that the transaction is settled.

Door 2: The recent blockhash expired before the transaction landed

Every transaction carries a recent blockhash, and a transaction that references an expired blockhash can never land. Solana’s production guide describes blockhashes as valid for roughly 150 blocks, which it puts at approximately 60 to 90 seconds. The transaction reference gives the limit as 150 slots. Neither figure is a fixed timer. Block and slot pacing varies, so the guide’s seconds are an approximation. The page reviewed for the production guide did not show a publication year, and the same is true of the transaction reference.

For application code, the reliable value is the lastValidBlockHeight returned alongside the blockhash. Compare the current block height against it. While the current height is still at or below that value, the original signed transaction can still land and should be tracked, not replaced.

Door 3: A recent status lookup returned nothing

A null from a signature-status lookup is inconclusive. The signature may simply have left the node’s recent status cache. Solana’s provider guidance says to search transaction history after the blockhash expires and to verify the intended application or on-chain state before rebuilding anything. Pass searchTransactionHistory: true when a signature may be older than the recent cache.

getTransaction is the second lookup. It returns the confirmed transaction for a signature, or null if the transaction is not found at the requested commitment. That null describes the result of that query at that commitment. It does not prove the transaction never landed, because a transaction can exist at a less strict commitment level than the one you asked for.

Door 4: A preflight or execution error existed, but the interface never displayed it

By default, sendTransaction verifies signatures and simulates the transaction at the configured preflight commitment before forwarding it. If simulation fails, the RPC returns an error, and nothing reaches the cluster. Many wallet and dapp integrations catch that error, show a generic message or a spinner, and move on. Log the complete JSON-RPC error body from the client, not only the message a user saw.

If the transaction did reach the cluster and failed during execution, the status metadata carries an error. Solana documents forms such as BlockhashNotFound and instruction-level errors. Transaction instructions execute atomically, so state changes revert when an instruction fails. Fees are still charged for a failed transaction, so a failure can cost money even when no state changed.

Skipping preflight is not a fix for a missing error. Solana’s production guide treats skipPreflight as a latency choice for transactions that have already been validated, and it advises keeping preflight during development so errors surface early.

Door 5: The RPC endpoint lagged, rate-limited, or answered inconsistently

The endpoint you select determines which node receives the request and which state it reads. Shared public endpoints are not intended for production applications. They may return HTTP 429 when rate limits are exceeded and HTTP 403 when traffic is blocked. A reply that arrives quickly can still come from a node that is behind, so speed is not evidence of freshness.

Provider guidance recommends checking endpoint health and slot freshness, planning bounded retries with a fallback endpoint, and keeping the blockhash fetch, simulation, send, and confirmation checks on one healthy endpoint where possible. A fallback can help you read the outcome, but switching providers does not recover a transaction that was never broadcast or confirmed. It only changes what later requests show.

Door 6: The signature was checked at the wrong commitment or through the wrong lookup

Solana exposes three commitment levels, and they are not interchangeable. The table below sets out what each one means and where it fits.

Commitment level What the RPC documentation says Suitable use
processed The newest view of the chain, but it can be rolled back. Showing a pending state to the user. Do not release goods or credit funds on it.
confirmed A supermajority of stake has directly voted on the block. Confirmations where a rollback risk is acceptable and speed matters more than full finality.
finalized The strongest confirmation state described in the RPC overview. Irreversible actions, such as crediting an account or marking a payment complete.

The method matters as much as the level. confirmTransaction was removed in Agave v2.0, so older code that calls it will fail. Use getSignatureStatuses for current status checks, and set searchTransactionHistory: true when the signature may have left the recent cache.

Door 7: A retry created a second transaction or repeated the operation

A timed-out submission may already have reached the cluster. While its blockhash is still valid, provider guidance advises reusing the same signed transaction and tracking its signature rather than creating a new one. Any new signed transaction carries a new signature, so a rebuilt payment or state change is a second operation unless your application can recognize it as the same intent.

This is the door that causes the most damage. Do not resend while the original outcome is unknown. Search history and verify the intended change first. Only after the original is confirmed as not landed, and its blockhash has expired, should you rebuild with a fresh blockhash and apply idempotency protection in your own application logic.

Diagnosing a specific report, step by step

Use this sequence for any single transaction. It applies the doors above in the order that avoids duplicate operations.

  1. Record the cluster (mainnet, devnet, or testnet), the signature, the RPC URL or provider name, the submission time, and the complete client response or error.
  2. Query the signature. Use this JSON-RPC body, adding searchTransactionHistory when the signature may be older than the recent cache:
    {"jsonrpc":"2.0","id":1,"method":"getSignatureStatuses","params":[["<SIGNATURE>"],{"searchTransactionHistory":true}]}

Read confirmationStatus and err together. A null entry is not a verdict.

  3. If the status is absent, call getTransaction with the signature at the commitment your application requires. Treat a null result as “not found at this commitment.”
  4. Retrieve the lastValidBlockHeight that came with the blockhash and compare it with the current block height from the same healthy endpoint.
  5. Check the expected application state directly: the balance, the account data, the order record, or the token transfer the transaction was meant to produce.
  6. Only when the original did not land and its blockhash has expired, rebuild with a fresh blockhash and idempotency protection. Record the new signature as a separate attempt.
  7. If the endpoint itself is suspect, check its health, slot freshness, rate-limit responses (HTTP 429 or 403), and whether it serves history for older signatures. Run the lookups on a healthy fallback, but keep the original signature and cluster unchanged.

Choosing an endpoint for lifecycle checks

When you are evaluating RPC providers for this kind of diagnosis, Solana’s provider guidance points to six criteria. Compare them in this order:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Slot freshness and latency, including tail latency rather than averages alone.
  • Rate limits, timeouts, and the clarity of error responses.
  • How quickly transaction status changes become visible to your application.
  • History retention and support for older signatures.
  • Fallback behavior and WebSocket reconnection.
  • Whether the blockhash, simulation, send, and confirmation steps for one transaction run on the same healthy endpoint.

These criteria are a checklist for your own testing. Solana’s documentation does not rank providers, and this article does not offer provider benchmarks.

What to keep from the doors

  • A send response is an acceptance, not a settlement. Track the signature until a status with the required commitment confirms it.
  • Use lastValidBlockHeight, not a fixed timer, to decide when a blockhash has expired.
  • A null status or transaction lookup means “not available here, at this commitment.” Search history before concluding anything.
  • Read err and the full preflight error. A failed transaction can still incur fees.
  • Never send a new payment or state change while the original might still land.

Stale endpoints, public-endpoint rate limits, commitment choice, and history retention all change what a lookup shows, and any of them can make a landed transaction look missing.
