Solana Priority Fees: How to Turn RPC Samples Into a Bid

Solana’s recent-fee RPC returns historical samples, not a guaranteed bid. Query writable accounts, estimate compute use, and tune fees from transaction outcomes.
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

getRecentPrioritizationFees returns recent fee samples, not a guaranteed price that will land your transaction. With no account addresses supplied, its samples can be zero; passing the transaction’s writable accounts makes the query more relevant, but still does not turn historical data into a promise of inclusion.

What the RPC result tells you

getRecentPrioritizationFees reports recent prioritization-fee samples by slot. A node’s cache holds up to 150 blocks, and the optional account argument accepts up to 128 addresses, according to Solana’s RPC method documentation. The history is measured in blocks, not a fixed number of seconds.

Each result is a slot paired with a prioritizationFee integer. It is a record of sampled fees in the queried scope and recent history—not a live market-clearing quote for your transaction.

Why an unscoped query can return zero

The account argument is optional. Without it, the query is broad rather than tailored to the writable accounts your transaction will lock. Solana’s exchange implementation guidance explains that an unscoped query can return the lowest fee needed to land in a block, which is often zero unless the block is full.

A zero therefore means the sampled minimum for that scope and history was zero. It does not mean every transaction can land immediately without a priority fee. Current competition can differ from the sampled slots, and transactions compete for inclusion.

How to make the sample more relevant

  1. Identify the accounts your transaction will lock for writing. Use the actual writable set, rather than unrelated accounts or every account mentioned in the transaction.
  2. Pass those public keys to getRecentPrioritizationFees. The method supports up to 128 addresses; for several accounts, Solana describes the returned value as the maximum of their individual minimum fees.
  3. Read the response as a set of slot-level samples. Use it as a baseline for your fee strategy, not as an instruction to copy one value into every transaction.

The account-scoped behavior and multi-account interpretation are described in Solana’s fee implementation guide and the RPC reference. Scoping improves relevance to contested writable accounts; it does not eliminate the time lag or guarantee inclusion.

Set compute use before choosing a CU price

A transaction’s priority fee depends on its requested compute-unit limit, not just the compute it ultimately consumes. For legacy and v0 messages, the fee in lamports is the ceiling of CU price in micro-lamports multiplied by the requested CU limit, divided by 1,000,000:

priority fee = ceil(CU price × requested CU limit ÷ 1,000,000)

Solana’s fee documentation describes the formula and a current maximum of 1,400,000 compute units per transaction. That is a maximum, not a recommended limit. The documented base fee is 5,000 lamports per signature; it is separate from the priority fee.

Estimate compute use before setting the limit. Solana’s production-readiness guide points to transaction simulation for this purpose, and its exchange guidance recommends requesting the lowest CU amount needed for execution. An unnecessarily high limit raises the priority fee for a given CU price, even when execution consumes less compute.

Build and tune a fee strategy

  • Set both an appropriate compute-unit limit and a CU price through compute-budget instructions.
  • Use the recent account-scoped samples as a baseline when the transaction has writable accounts whose competition matters.
  • Choose a strategy that fits the application’s latency and reliability needs, then monitor landing or confirmation outcomes and adjust.
  • Do not assume a particular percentile, fixed buffer, or bid is universally optimal. Solana says fees are dynamic and does not prescribe a canonical strategy.

Historical samples can become stale as network activity and competing bids change. The method helps describe recent conditions; observed transaction outcomes help show whether the strategy is working for your application.

How to assess another estimator

There is no single fee-estimation approach established as best for every application. When evaluating a third-party estimator, check what it measures and how that maps to the transaction you send:

  • Does it use the transaction’s writable accounts?
  • What recent time window and sample statistic does it use?
  • Does it return a CU price, a total priority fee, or both?
  • How does it account for the requested compute-unit limit?
  • What inclusion and latency outcomes have you measured for your own application?

Solana documents the RPC’s query behavior and the dynamic nature of fees, but a third-party estimator’s methodology needs to be verified independently.
