How Murmur Keeps Talk and Music Moving Without Losing the Listener

Murmur overlaps speech and music preparation with playback, uses an epoch to keep interrupted work from reentering the queue, and schedules voice and music on an audio timeline.

Murmur prepares speech and music while audio is already playing, but it does not treat a queued item as finished or an interruption as a simple queue clear. Its local Director coordinates preparation and playback, while an AudioEngine manages playback state and a mixer schedules voice and music together. That division is the key to understanding Murmur’s prefetching, stale-work handling, and measured delays.

How Murmur separates content from playback

Murmur is a TypeScript application on Node.js, with a separate terminal interface process built with Bun and OpenTUI. Model inference and production speech synthesis use external services, so selected context and spoken text leave the machine. The implementation account, checked against revision d6c3619, says the Brain uses the Claude Agent SDK and submits structured results through task-specific tools with schema validation. The model writes segments and selects content; it does not directly control the speakers. The local Director schedules work, and the AudioEngine owns playback state. What prefetching does—and what it cannot guarantee

Talk segments are queued before their speech is necessarily ready

The talk buffer targets two segments. Each entry contains text and a speech-synthesis Promise that has already started, so preparation overlaps the current playback. When a segment is consumed, the Director refills the buffer in the background, with at most one refill task in flight. But a queued entry is not necessarily a playable clip: if its Promise has not resolved by the time playback needs it, Murmur still waits for synthesis to finish.

Music has its own one-item lookahead

Music search, selection, and source resolution run as a one-slot prefetch. If the next song is not ready at a planned boundary, Murmur can play another talk segment and check again at the next boundary. Deeper buffers could hide more variation in preparation time, but they also trigger more generation and leave more material that may become stale after the listener changes direction. Murmur’s author says the current depth has not been established as a global optimum.

How much waiting prefetch can remove

If preparation begins with R seconds remaining in the current segment and takes P seconds, the extra wait at the handoff is W = max(0, P - R). This simple model ignores playback startup overhead and retries. For example, the article’s 30-second segment and 12-second preparation illustration implies no extra preparation wait if work starts at the beginning; those values are illustrative, not measured performance.

What happens when the listener interrupts

An interruption makes queued talk potentially irrelevant. Murmur clears the old talk queue and invalidates refill work already in progress. While the reply is generated and synthesized, current audio can continue. When reply audio is ready, Murmur stops any remaining old voice playback and starts the reply; after that, it refills the talk queue with updated conversation context. If another line arrives while the reply is being prepared, Murmur merges it into the reply and invalidates the superseded preparation. In an ordinary interruption, the song continues beneath the voice at a reduced level.

Why clearing a queue is not enough

Asynchronous work can return after a queue has been cleared. Murmur guards against this with an incrementing epoch: a refill captures the current value, awaits generation, and enqueues its result only if the epoch is unchanged. An interruption increments the epoch, so work started under an earlier conversation state cannot add a stale segment to the queue.

This prevents an obsolete result from taking effect in the queue; it does not undo actions that have already completed, and a model request already sent may continue consuming resources. Old voice can also continue while the new reply is prepared, which is why reply latency and silence are different measures.

How voice and music share the audio timeline

Murmur uses node-web-audio-api for a graph containing voice, the main song, and a background bed. Instead of relying on JavaScript timers to adjust volume at a moment that may drift, it schedules gain changes ahead on the audio clock. In the implementation described by the author, voice lowers the main song to linear gain 0.3 over about 0.3 seconds; after speech, the song returns over 2.5 seconds. A linear gain of 0.3 is an amplitude ratio, not “30% as loud.” These are listening-adjusted implementation values, not universal audio settings. The background bed stays steady during speech and crossfades only when the main song enters or leaves.

Complete speech clips affect when playback can begin

Speech synthesis waits for the service to return a complete clip before playback starts. Knowing the clip duration helps schedule music recovery, interruptions, and joins, but the first line and each reply must wait for the full clip. Long music sources, by contrast, are decoded and queued in chunks, so playback does not require loading the entire song first.

Song changes and introductions

For a song transition, Murmur waits for the engine to confirm that audio has been queued before it updates “now playing,” records the song, and plays its introduction. That confirmation establishes a scheduling event, not that sound has reached the listener’s speakers. After a song starts, the system generates a short coda so the next return to talk can use context from the current song rather than a segment written before it began.

How to interpret Murmur’s latency records

The author’s logs are historical implementation records, not an independently reproduced benchmark. They contain small samples, and the figures were not rerun for the article. Startup delay, waiting between segments, and time from listener input to reply playback answer different questions and should not be combined into one latency number.

Reader’s question Relevant measure What Murmur’s records establish
“Why hasn’t anyone started talking?” Startup to first audible voice Roughly 29–39 seconds in the historical measurements. Prefetch did not cover the first batch.
“Why did it stop?” Extra wait beyond the configured pause at a segment boundary Across two historical runs, 13 prefetched-talk boundaries entered playback in the same logged second as talk.buffer warm. The logs have one-second resolution, so they do not establish zero latency.
“When will it answer me?” Input-to-reply-playback latency The author separates this from silence: old voice can continue during reply preparation, and reply playback waits for a complete synthesized clip. The cited records do not provide a single general reply-latency figure.

Preparation and startup figures from the logs

  • The first two-segment batch took 24.5 seconds in one historical full run and 33.9 seconds in another, measured from text generation through completed speech synthesis.
  • One separate log recorded 9–14 seconds for a refill segment’s model call alone, before speech synthesis.
  • For startup to the first song, a cold-start run took 136 seconds before optimization and 71 seconds after; a subsequent run with prior-session memory took 195 seconds before and 78 seconds after. The author combined multiple changes and did not rerun these figures for the article, so the before-and-after difference cannot be attributed to one isolated change.
  • Music preparation itself took 40.2 seconds and 54.7 seconds in the two after-optimization runs.
  • In another real log, five music selections took roughly 82–192 seconds each, while talk could continue during selection.

The experiments used separate data directories, preset personas, cached background beds, and a fixed “listener present” signal. Changes included starting music selection earlier, simplifying search, and limiting selection context. The small number of samples cannot support a meaningful long-run P95, and natural transitions plus real-service latency and source failures require listening to real runs.

What the design means for similar audio systems

Murmur’s implementation illustrates several useful distinctions when assessing a system that mixes generated speech and music:

  • Measure startup to first audible voice separately from steady-state boundary waits and input-to-reply playback.
  • Check whether a buffer contains completed audio or only promises for work still in progress.
  • Balance lookahead depth against preparation cost and the chance that queued material becomes stale.
  • Invalidate asynchronous work explicitly when listener intent changes; clearing visible queue entries alone does not stop late results.
  • Determine whether an interruption preserves music and how voice ducking is scheduled and measured.
  • Treat a scheduling acknowledgement as evidence that audio was queued, not proof that a listener heard it.
