Write down the expected result, try normal and edge-case inputs, compare what happens, and report any mismatch so someone else can reproduce it. Testing can reveal risk and defects; it cannot prove that software is defect-free.
What software testing is—and what it includes
Testing is a set of activities used to evaluate software and provide information about its quality. It includes more than running a program and looking for errors: testers analyze expectations, design checks, execute them, report findings, and consider what to test next. The ISTQB Certified Tester Foundation Level (CTFL) v4.0 syllabus covers testing fundamentals, testing across the software development life cycle (SDLC), test levels and types, static testing, test analysis and design, test management, defect management, tools, and automation benefits and risks.

Testing helps people make better-informed decisions about software quality. A successful check shows that a particular behavior worked under particular conditions; it does not establish that every other behavior or condition is safe.
How test levels differ from test types
A test level describes the scope or point in the software where testing is performed. A test type describes a quality characteristic or testing objective. These answer different questions, and a type of testing can be applied at more than one level.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
| Level | What it focuses on |
|---|---|
| Component | An individual component or unit of software. |
| Component integration | Interactions between software components. |
| System | The behavior of the complete system. |
| System integration | Interactions between the system and other systems or external services. |
| Acceptance | Whether the system meets acceptance needs for its intended use. |
For example, an integration check might verify that an online shop passes an order correctly to its payment component. A system-level check might follow a customer from signing in through placing an order and then confirm that it appears in order history. These examples appear in the Selenium Project’s testing practices documentation.
Quality-focused test types include checks of functional behavior and characteristics such as performance or usability. The right type depends on the risk and the question being asked; the same system can be tested at several levels and for several quality characteristics.
Design a useful check before you run it
Begin with a requirement, acceptance criterion, or clear user expectation. Turn it into a check with a specific purpose and an observable expected result. For a sign-in form, “the form should work” is too vague. “With a registered email and correct password, submitting the form opens the account page” is testable.

Note: This device is not compatible with Linux.
- What You Get: Anker USB-C Hub (5-in-1, 4K HDMI), welcome guide, 18-month warranty, and our friendly customer service.
- Normal case: Try a typical valid input, such as a registered email and correct password.
- Boundary case: Check a limit, such as the shortest permitted password or a maximum search length, if the feature defines one.
- Invalid or unexpected input: Try a missing field, malformed email, incorrect password, or a search with no matching result.
For each check, write down the setup or test data, the steps, the expected result, and the actual result. If expected behavior is unclear, ask the product owner or consult the requirement rather than silently inventing a rule. When time is limited, prioritize cases that could cause meaningful harm or block an important user task.
Practice on one small feature
A search box or sign-in form is a manageable first exercise. Keep the scope small enough that you can explain what each check is meant to learn.
- Choose a feature and expectation. For example, a search box should show matching items for a known query and a useful empty state when there are no matches.
- Write a few distinct checks. Include an ordinary query, a boundary or unusual-but-allowed input, and an invalid or no-result case.
- Run each check and record the outcome. Note the setup, exact steps, expected result, and actual result; keep the observations separate from your interpretation.
- Report any mismatch clearly. Include concise reproduction steps and relevant context such as browser, device, account state, or test data.
- After a fix, check both the change and nearby behavior. Confirmation testing checks whether the reported defect is fixed. Regression testing checks whether existing behavior was affected by the change; they are different activities.
Write a defect report someone can reproduce
A useful defect report is specific enough that another person can follow it without guessing. State what happened, what you expected instead, and the conditions under which the mismatch occurred. Avoid conclusions about the cause unless you have evidence; describe the observed behavior.

Manual testing comes before deciding to automate
“New to Automation testing” is a phrase some learners use, but it does not mean automation must be the first step. First understand the behavior to check and what evidence would count as a pass or failure. Automation is a way to execute selected checks; it does not decide whether the checks are meaningful.
Consider automating a check when it is repeatable, valuable to run often, and stable enough that the maintenance cost makes sense. A rapidly changing interface or a one-off exploratory question may be more useful to assess manually. Before choosing a tool, consider the application type, team language and environment, what needs to be verified, and who will maintain the checks. The Selenium documentation describes browser automation uses, while the CTFL syllabus addresses tool support and the benefits and risks of automation; neither establishes one framework as the best choice for every beginner.

Test-driven development (TDD) is related to tests but is not simply a testing level or tool. Selenium’s documentation explains: “Rather than a test type per se, TDD is an iterative development methodology in which tests drive the design of a feature.”
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Adapt testing to the development lifecycle
Testing does not happen only at the end of a project. The SDLC influences when testing occurs, its scope, how much documentation is useful, which techniques fit, how far to automate, and what responsibilities testers have. In iterative delivery, teams often repeat checks as changes arrive, including regression tests for previously working behavior.
For a beginner, the practical implication is to match the check to the change and risk. A small code change may call for focused confirmation and nearby regression checks; a major integrated feature may need broader system or acceptance testing. The precise plan depends on the product and its lifecycle, not on a universal fixed sequence.

Choose a learning route; certification is optional
You can learn by practicing on a small feature, studying the CTFL syllabus, taking structured training, or combining these approaches. ISTQB identifies accredited classroom, virtual, and e-learning training and also says: “Self-study, using the syllabus and recommended reading material, is also an option when preparing for the Foundation Level exam.” Certification is not a prerequisite for beginning to learn or practice testing.
When comparing learning routes, consider the following:
- Whether you prefer self-study or instructor-led structure.
- Whether syllabus alignment and provider accreditation matter for your goal.
- How much hands-on practice and feedback the route includes.
- Which delivery format fits your schedule and access needs.
- Local exam availability and arrangements, if you intend to sit the exam.
The CTFL v4.0 page lists an exam of 40 questions, a passing score of 26 out of 40, and a 60-minute duration; it states that candidates taking the exam in a language that is not their native language receive 25% additional time. These are exam details, not measures of software quality or a promise of career outcomes. Check the official page for current arrangements before booking.
