No available evidence shows that software engineering is ending. AI is changing how developers handle coding, testing, debugging, and other tasks, but its effects vary with the work, the developer, and the team. Studies report productivity gains in some settings, alongside concerns about delivery stability, learning, and oversight. They do not establish how AI will affect software engineering employment over the long term.

Will AI replace software engineers?

The evidence supports a more specific answer than either “yes” or “no”: AI can take on parts of software work, but engineers still make decisions about goals, design, verification, and accountability. Researchers have examined task completion, tool use, developer attitudes, and organizational delivery. Those are important signals about changing work, but they are not a forecast of net engineering jobs.

Microsoft Research’s August 2025 SPACE study concluded that “AI is augmenting developers rather than replacing them,” interpreting its findings on developers’ work and team support—not predicting the labor market. The reviewed studies do not prove that the occupation is disappearing, nor do they quantify long-term skill loss across the profession.

What software engineers use AI for

AI support is most established in tasks where developers can inspect and test the result. Developers report using it for coding, testing, debugging, and understanding code. A Microsoft Research survey-based study of more than 500 developers, published in August 2025, found broad adoption and perceived productivity benefits, particularly for routine tasks. Benefits varied with task complexity, personal use, and team adoption; the study found less evidence that AI had changed collaboration.

Routine development and code understanding

In an August 2025 internal study, Anthropic examined 132 of its engineers and researchers, conducted 53 interviews, and analyzed internal Claude Code data. Participants described using AI frequently for debugging and understanding code, and sometimes to work in unfamiliar areas. These observations offer a detailed company case, not a representative picture of the software workforce.

Documentation and operational toil

A Microsoft Research study of 860 developers, published in October 2025, distinguished core development work from toil and relationship-centered work. Developers showed demand for help with documentation and operational toil as well as coding and testing. For systems-facing tasks, the study identifies reliability and security as important requirements for AI support.

Mentoring, design, and relationship-centered work

Developers drew clearer boundaries around mentoring and work with identity or relationship significance. A July 2026 Microsoft Research study of 448 professional developers found that most accepted AI producing work under their oversight, but comfort with autonomy depended on the task. Acceptance was lower for identity-defining, human-facing, and design-oriented work; accountability was associated with less willingness to let AI act on a developer’s behalf. In these settings, transparency, alignment, and the ability to steer the system matter because a person must remain in control.

Do AI coding tools make developers more productive?

Some controlled evidence points to increased task completion, but productivity figures from different studies measure different things. A task-count result from an experiment is not interchangeable with a worker’s estimate of saved time or a company-wide measure of software delivery.

Evidence What was measured What the result does—and does not—show
Three field experiments, Microsoft Research, June 2025 A combined analysis of 4,867 developers given access to an AI coding assistant reported a 26.08% increase in completed tasks, with a standard error of 10.3%. Each experiment was noisy. Less-experienced developers had higher adoption and greater gains. This is evidence about the intervention and task-completion outcome in those settings, not a universal estimate for every developer, tool, codebase, or engineering outcome.
DORA / Google, 2025 The corrected v. 2025.2 report drew on more than 100 hours of qualitative material and survey responses from nearly 5,000 technology professionals worldwide. The report examines AI in relation to organizational strengths and weaknesses; it is broad survey and qualitative evidence, not a controlled estimate of AI’s causal effect on productivity.
DORA / Google Cloud, March 10, 2026 A DORA article summarizing the 2025 research says 90% of surveyed technology professionals used AI at work and more than 80% believed it increased their productivity. These are survey responses and perceived productivity, not a causal measurement of output. The article also reports an association between higher AI adoption and increased delivery throughput as well as delivery instability.
Anthropic internal study, based on August 2025 research Employees self-reported using Claude in about 59% of their work and reporting a 50% productivity gain. These are self-assessments from Anthropic employees. The study cautions that productivity is difficult to measure precisely, so the figures should not be treated as an independent or workforce-wide estimate.

DORA’s 2025 report describes AI as an organizational amplifier: “It magnifies the strengths of high-performing organizations and the dysfunctions of struggling ones.” That framing helps explain why more generated code does not automatically mean better software delivery. Review, testing, coordination, and production stability still shape whether faster work produces a successful outcome.

Why a faster developer may not mean a faster engineering team

Individual task speed is only one part of delivery. A team also needs to review changes, test them, coordinate dependencies, and keep production systems stable. DORA’s reported association between higher AI adoption, throughput, and instability does not prove that AI alone caused either outcome. It does, however, make it important to measure delivery quality and reliability alongside code production.

In practice, a team should judge AI use by end-to-end outcomes: whether work reaches users sooner without an unacceptable increase in defects, rework, or operational disruption. Adoption rates and developers’ impressions can inform that judgment, but cannot substitute for delivery measures.

Why access to AI does not guarantee effective adoption

Tool availability is not the same as useful integration. A Microsoft Research study of 54 developers across 27 teams found differences between frequent and infrequent users associated with their views of the tool, their willingness to experiment or use it conservatively, and whether they persisted through difficulty. The implication is that onboarding, time to learn, and team norms affect whether access becomes useful practice.

In a July 2026 Microsoft Research / ACM International Conference on Software Engineering paper, researchers described a “Productivity Pressure Paradox”: “widespread organizational expectations for rapid productivity gains without sufficient investment in learning support” may undermine the gains motivating adoption. Setting targets without helping people learn can turn experimentation into pressure rather than effective use.

How AI may affect skills and mentorship

AI can help a developer tackle unfamiliar tasks, but frequent delegation may also reduce practice in writing or critiquing code. In Anthropic’s internal interviews, some employees worried about losing opportunities to build deeper coding and code-review skills. They also described AI becoming the first stop for questions they might previously have brought to colleagues, potentially reducing informal mentorship.

Those accounts identify plausible concerns; they do not show that skill atrophy or reduced mentoring will occur across the workforce. Teams can respond by deciding which tasks are appropriate to delegate, making review and explanation part of AI-assisted work, and preserving direct opportunities for people to learn from colleagues.

How engineering teams can assess AI use

The studies do not provide a validated scorecard for comparing team approaches. They do point to five useful questions for evaluating an AI workflow:

  • What kind of task is it, and how easily can its output be checked? A suggestion that is straightforward to test differs from work whose quality depends on judgment or context.
  • Who is using the tool, and what learning support is available? Adoption and benefit vary, and access alone does not ensure effective use.
  • Where does human oversight sit? Clarify who reviews the output and remains accountable, especially when AI is allowed to act more autonomously.
  • What safeguards does the task require? Systems-facing work may call for stronger reliability and security; human-facing work may require transparency, alignment, and steerability.
  • What happens to delivery end to end? Track throughput together with review, testing, rework, and stability rather than treating code volume or perceived speed as the whole result.

What the evidence can—and cannot—say about engineering’s future

The studies available through 2026 show widespread workplace use, task-level changes, and productivity gains in some measured settings. They also show that results depend on work type, team practices, learning support, and the level of human control. Survey beliefs, internal company studies, field experiments, and organizational associations answer different questions and should not be collapsed into a single claim that “AI makes engineers X% more productive.”

None of the reviewed evidence establishes a reliable forecast for net software engineering employment or proves that engineers will become obsolete. The sound conclusion is narrower: AI is changing how engineering work is done, while the scale and long-term consequences of that change remain unsettled.
