After you enter a URL and press Enter, your browser interprets the address, finds a route to the site, requests its content, and turns the response into a page you can use. In a typical HTTPS visit, that involves DNS, a secure connection, HTTP requests and responses, and rendering. It is a useful overview—not a fixed sequence: cached data, redirects, browser design, and page scripts can change what happens or skip steps.

1. The browser interprets what you typed

An address bar can accept both website addresses and search terms. The browser first decides which one you entered; if it is a URL, pressing Enter starts navigation. In Chrome’s documented architecture, the browser process’s UI thread handles this decision and initiates the network call. That is a description of Chrome, not a universal blueprint for every browser.

If the text is interpreted as a search query rather than an address, the browser sends it to the configured search service instead of navigating directly to the hostname you may have intended.

2. DNS helps the browser find the host

A URL’s hostname—such as www.example.com—is a human-readable name. DNS, or the Domain Name System, helps resolve that name to an IP address that can be used to reach the destination. If the browser or another part of the system already has a usable cached answer, it may not need to perform a fresh lookup.

  • CONNECT MORE DEVICES: Wi-Fi 6 technology communicates more data to more devices simultaneously using revolutionary OFDMA technology
  • EXTENSIVE COVERAGE: Achieve the strong, reliable WiFi coverage with Archer AX1800 as it focuses signal strength to your devices far away using Beamforming technology, 4 high-gain antennas and an advanced front-end module (FEM) chipset
  • OUR CYBERSECURITY COMMITMENT: TP-Link is a signatory of the U.S. Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency’s (CISA) Secure-by-Design pledge. This device is designed, built, and maintained, with advanced security as a core requirement.

A page can also refer to files hosted on other hostnames. Those names may need their own DNS resolutions, so loading one page can involve more than one host lookup.

3. The browser establishes a connection

Once it has an address, the browser establishes a network connection appropriate to the URL and protocol. For an HTTPS address, TLS (Transport Layer Security) negotiates security parameters and verifies the server’s identity. It protects data exchanged over the connection from being read or altered in transit.

What if the URL starts with HTTP?

A website may redirect an HTTP visit to HTTPS. A browser that has remembered the site’s HSTS policy—or has the site on a preloaded list—can use HTTPS from the outset instead. HSTS is a policy that tells the browser to use HTTPS for that site.

  • NIGHTHAWK WIFI 6 ROUTER FOR YOUR WHOLE HOME: Delivers fast, reliable WiFi across every room of your apartment or small home for streaming, gaming, video calls, and smart home devices, all running at the same time without slowing each other down.
  • WORKS WITH YOUR EXISTING INTERNET SERVICE: Pairs with your existing modem or gateway via ethernet. Compatible with most cable, fiber, DSL, and satellite providers. Some gateways and modem router combos may require bridge mode. No coax needed.
  • SET UP AND MANAGE YOUR NETWORK WITH THE NIGHTHAWK APP: Download the free Nighthawk app on iOS or Android for guided setup. Manage WiFi, run speed tests, pause devices, and set up guest networks from anywhere. Active internet required.
  • READY FOR THE DEVICES YOU ALREADY OWN: Your phones, laptops, and TVs work right out of the box. WiFi 6 delivers speeds up to 1.8 Gbps across 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands. Backward compatible with WiFi 5 and earlier.
  • COVERAGE IN EVERY ROOM: Covers up to 1,500 sq. ft. for up to 20 connected devices. Walls, floors, and interference can reduce range. Larger or multi-story homes may benefit from a NETGEAR Orbi mesh WiFi system.

If a browser has not yet learned or been given that policy, an initial request over HTTP can be exposed to interception before the redirect occurs. A later HTTPS redirect does not retroactively protect that first exchange.

4. The browser sends a request and receives a response

The browser sends an HTTP request for a resource, usually the page named by the URL. HTTP is the protocol browsers and servers use to exchange requests and responses. The server replies with a status code and response content.

A successful request may return HTML, but the outcome is not always a page: a redirect points the browser elsewhere; a forbidden or not-found response reports an error; a server-error status signals a problem at the server; and a response can be a file or another format the browser handles differently. The response type and status influence what happens next.

5. HTML can trigger more requests

When the response contains HTML, the browser begins parsing it. The document may refer to CSS stylesheets, JavaScript, images, fonts, and other resources, which commonly require separate HTTP requests. If those resources use different hostnames, reaching them may involve further DNS and connection work.

  • MU-MIMO technology - (5GHz band) allows high speeds for multiple devices simultaneously

The browser can begin processing before it has received the entire document. Some scripts can pause parsing; scripts can also change the document or request additional resources. That means a page’s loading work can continue and branch as its contents are discovered and executed.

6. The browser builds and paints the page

As a high-level model, the browser turns HTML into a DOM (Document Object Model), a structured representation of the document. It parses CSS into a CSSOM (CSS Object Model), representing the page’s style rules. The browser combines structure and styles to determine which elements are visible and how they should look.

It then calculates layout—where elements fit and how large they are—and paints pixels for display. Scripts, arriving resources, or later changes to the document can require more style, layout, or paint work. This describes the broad rendering stages, not an identical internal implementation across all browsers.

Why the sequence can differ

The steps above are a common path, not a strict, serial checklist. A browser may use cached DNS data or reuse an existing connection, avoiding some work. Redirects add navigation steps; a non-HTML response may not lead to page rendering; and page scripts can initiate requests or trigger further rendering after the first content appears.

Browsers may also do speculative work before you press Enter. Depending on browser behavior, settings, and heuristics, they can preconnect to a likely destination, prefetch resources, or prerender a page they predict you will visit. Chrome, for example, may prerender when its heuristics indicate high confidence. These actions are not guaranteed, but they can help explain why a destination sometimes appears to load unusually quickly.
