It involves much more than writing code: developers interpret requirements, plan solutions, check quality, manage changes and work with other people throughout a product or service’s life.
What is software development?
The UK National Careers Service defines the work simply: “Software developers create and test programs that allow people to complete tasks, run services and use digital devices.” In practice, software development is the organised process of specifying, designing, building, testing, releasing and maintaining software to meet a need.

That software might be a website, mobile app, business system, game, data tool or the software embedded in a device. The people doing the work and the exact tasks vary by project: a small team may cover several areas, while a large organisation can divide them among specialists.

A developer helps move software from an idea or requirement into a working product and keeps it useful as needs change. Typical responsibilities include:
#1 Best Overall
- Understanding user or business needs and translating them into requirements or user stories.
- Planning and designing a solution, including its data, interfaces and security considerations.
- Writing maintainable code in a suitable programming language.
- Testing individual components and how they work together, then debugging problems.
- Using source control and team processes to review and manage changes.
- Deploying software to an appropriate environment, monitoring its performance and improving or eventually retiring it.
- Communicating technical decisions and progress with colleagues, stakeholders and users.
The mix depends on the role. Developers may work alongside analysts, designers, engineers, delivery managers and users. In a larger organisation, work is often split across specialists; in a smaller one, a developer may take on a wider range of tasks, sometimes with supervision.
What are the stages of software development?
A useful way to understand the work is as a life cycle, from investigating a need through ongoing improvement to retirement. It is a practical model, not a mandatory sequence: teams may revisit earlier decisions as they learn more, and projects differ in how they plan and release work.
- Understand the need: identify who the software is for, what problem it should solve and what constraints matter.
- Plan and design: decide how the solution should work, including its user experience, data, architecture and security.
- Build: implement the design in code, using approaches that make the software understandable and maintainable.
- Test and debug: check individual units as well as how components work together, find defects and correct them.
- Review and manage changes: use source control and team processes to track, review and coordinate modifications.
- Deploy and improve: release the software to its intended environment, observe how it performs, maintain it and make changes as requirements evolve.
- Retire when appropriate: replace or decommission a product or service when it is no longer needed or suitable.
Some teams use agile approaches, organising work into smaller cycles with regular feedback. Others use more sequential planning, often associated with waterfall. Each approach can suit different requirements, levels of change and governance needs; neither is best for every project.
What skills do software developers need?
Technical ability matters, but the job also depends on understanding problems and working effectively with people. Skills reflected in the UK Level 4 software developer occupational standard include:
- Logical problem-solving and the ability to interpret requirements.
- Programming, debugging and testing.
- Understanding data structures and algorithms.
- Source control and software deployment.
- Security awareness and attention to quality.
- Collaboration and clear explanations for both technical and non-technical audiences.
Developers also need to keep learning. Languages, tools, project practices and user needs change, so being able to investigate unfamiliar problems is useful alongside knowledge of a particular technology.
What is the difference between software development and software engineering?
In everyday job listings, “software developer” and “software engineer” often overlap; the title alone does not reliably tell you what a role involves. Skills England’s integrated degree apprenticeship standard describes its software engineer specialism as broader and carrying higher responsibility than a developer role, with engineering principles applied across requirements, analysis, design, development, data requirements and security. That is the distinction made in that standard, not a universal rule followed by every employer.
Rank #3
When comparing jobs or courses, look at the responsibilities, expected experience, technical scope and accountability rather than assuming that one title always means more than the other.
How can you become a software developer in the UK?
There is no single required route in the National Careers Service profile. It lists university and college courses, apprenticeships and graduate training schemes as options. Entry criteria, funding, time commitments, workplace experience and qualification levels differ, so check the current requirements and availability for each course or apprenticeship you are considering.
University or college
Courses in subjects such as computing, computer science, programming or coding principles can provide structured learning. Compare course content and practical work with the area that interests you, such as web, mobile, data or games development.
Apprenticeships
Apprenticeships combine learning with workplace experience. The National Careers Service lists routes including Software Development Technician Level 3, Software Developer Level 4 and DevOps Engineer Level 4, as well as degree apprenticeship options. Requirements vary by route: the profile says foundation apprenticeships may have no specific qualification requirement, while advanced and higher apprenticeships typically specify GCSE- or A-level-equivalent qualifications. Check the individual vacancy and current eligibility rules.
Graduate training schemes
Some employers offer graduate training schemes. Their entry requirements and training focus are set by the employer, so assess whether the scheme’s practical work and support match your goals.

A practical way to begin learning
If you are learning independently or alongside a course, build a foundation you can demonstrate: practise programming fundamentals, make small projects, test and improve them, use version control and document decisions. These are sensible learning activities, not formal entry requirements or a guarantee of a job.

What do software developers earn, and what is the UK outlook?
The National Careers Service profile gives broad UK salary indicators of £30,000 for a starter and £75,000 for an experienced software developer, and lists typical working hours of 37–40 per week. These are profile figures, not guaranteed offers: pay and hours can vary by location, employer, specialism and experience.
Skills England and the Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s 2026 digital and technologies sector assessment projects 69,000 additional programmers and software development professionals between 2025 and 2035. This is a modelled projection for the occupation group within that sector, not a count of guaranteed vacancies. The report warns that projections carry substantial uncertainty and should be treated as illustrative.
The assessment also says AI adoption is changing the emphasis of work: routine coding and testing may take a smaller share, while oversight, assurance, judgement and communication become more important. Skills England says evidence about AI’s effect on employment levels is weak, so the projection does not establish that AI will either eliminate jobs or guarantee growth for individual applicants.

It may suit you if you enjoy solving problems, learning continuously and building or improving things with other people. The work can involve careful testing, communication and maintenance as well as creative design and coding. Consider the day-to-day responsibilities and learning route—not only the job title—when deciding whether it fits your interests.
For a realistic first step, compare a few current UK courses, apprenticeships or graduate schemes in the area that interests you. Check their prerequisites and practical content, then try a small project to see whether you enjoy the process of building, testing and revising software.
