A USB hub can split an existing port into more connections, but only if your TV supports hubs. If you want to play files or add streaming apps, the right setup is different: use a supported USB drive or an HDMI streaming player, respectively.
What “adding a USB port” can mean
A TV’s built-in USB sockets are physical connections wired into the television. A hub plugs into one of those sockets and provides extra sockets for compatible devices; it does not install another port in the TV or guarantee that the TV will recognize every connected device. The available manufacturer guidance is model-specific, and does not establish a universal adapter that adds a working USB data port.

- More USB connections: Consider a hub only if the manual for your exact TV model permits one.
- Play videos, music, or photos: Connect supported USB storage to an existing TV USB port.
- Watch streaming services: Use the TV’s apps or connect a compatible streaming player over HDMI.
Can you connect a USB hub to your TV?
It depends on the TV. Sony’s guidance for applicable BRAVIA models says USB devices connected through a hub are not supported and advises connecting devices directly (Sony BRAVIA USB hub guidance). By contrast, the Panasonic TX-55JXW604 manual permits hubs on the TV’s USB inputs, recommends an externally powered hub, and recommends direct connection for hard disks (Panasonic TX-55JXW604 operating instructions). These examples show why a hub that works with one TV cannot be assumed to work with another.

Check your TV before buying a hub
- Find the TV’s exact model number on its rear label, in its settings, or on its packaging.
- Open that model’s manual or manufacturer support page and check whether USB hubs are supported or prohibited.
- Check what its USB ports are intended to support, along with stated power limits and storage or media requirements.
- If the documentation allows hubs, follow its power recommendations. If it forbids hubs, or does not confirm compatibility, connect the device directly instead.
A powered hub can provide its own power to connected devices, but external power does not override a TV’s hub restriction or ensure that its software will recognize connected devices.

How to play files from a USB drive
For local media, begin by plugging a compatible flash drive or external storage device directly into an existing TV USB port. Then open the TV’s media browser or USB input and select the files. The exact menu names and supported content vary by manufacturer and model.
- Check the TV manual for supported storage devices, capacity, file systems, formats, and power requirements.
- Connect the drive directly to the TV’s USB port.
- Open the TV’s USB, media, or input menu and choose the drive or file you want to play.
LG’s instructions describe connecting storage, selecting the USB input, and checking supported formats; they also give capacity and power guidance specific to the applicable LG TVs. Those specifications are not universal limits for other brands (LG USB storage instructions). Sony likewise explains how to browse USB media while noting that file support can vary (Sony guide to playing USB content). A file’s extension alone does not guarantee playback; the TV must support its format and codec.

How to add streaming apps
If you mean adding access to streaming services rather than adding USB connections, use an app already available on the TV or connect a compatible streaming player to an HDMI port. The USB socket is not a substitute for HDMI video input. Roku’s setup instructions connect the player through HDMI and warn that a TV’s USB port may not supply enough power; use the supplied wall adapter if the TV USB connection does not power the player reliably (Roku streaming player setup).
Google documents a separate USB-C hub procedure for transferring files on specified Chromecast with Google TV and Google TV Streamer devices. It requires a compatible hub with a power-delivery port and a USB-C charger rated above 1.5 A / 7.5 W, and Google cautions that the method is not guaranteed for all setups. It is not general guidance for adding USB ports to a TV (Google instructions for moving files on listed streaming devices).
