Software Aging: Key Facts From David Parnas’s 1994 Paper

David Parnas’s 1994 paper argues that software ages when it fails to adapt or when poorly understood changes weaken the structure that makes it maintainable.

In “Software Aging,” David Lorge Parnas argues that software can lose usefulness or become harder to maintain over time—not because its code or mathematical correctness literally decays, but because user needs and operating environments change, and because poorly understood modifications can damage a product’s structure. His 1994 paper distinguishes those two mechanisms and makes a practical case for designing software to accommodate change while preserving the knowledge maintainers need.

What is “Software Aging”?

Parnas’s term describes a product’s declining fitness for its context. A program can continue to perform its original function and still become obsolete if it no longer meets user expectations. It can also become increasingly difficult to change when later modifications obscure the design concept and interfaces that once made it understandable.

The paper is an invited plenary paper published in the Proceedings of the 16th International Conference on Software Engineering in 1994, pages 279–287. McMaster University’s publication record lists DOI 10.1109/icse.1994.296790. Parnas’s framing is a conceptual argument from that period, not a current survey quantifying how often software ages or the industry-wide cost.

What causes software aging?

Parnas writes, “There are two, quite distinct, types of software aging.” They can occur separately or reinforce one another.

Elebase USB to USB C Adapter for iPhone 18 Pro Max,USBC Car Charger Adapter
  • Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
  • Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
  • Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
  • Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Failure to adapt

A product may fall behind because it is not changed as user expectations, competitors, or the environment evolve. Even if the original implementation still works as designed, its usefulness can shrink when the surrounding world changes.

Structural deterioration from change

Changes can also make software harder to understand. If maintainers do not grasp the original design concept or the boundaries between components, additions and fixes may introduce exceptions that do not fit the structure. Documentation that no longer reflects the implementation compounds the problem: future maintainers have less reliable guidance, so changes take more effort and carry greater risk.

These are not simply “too many features” versus “too few.” One mechanism is a mismatch between the product and its changing context; the other is damage to the structure and knowledge that make continued change manageable.

Does software aging mean performance degradation?

Not necessarily. Parnas distinguishes his broader idea from resource problems such as unreleased memory or files that continually grow. Such problems can arise at any age and may be more readily corrected; they are not, by themselves, what he means by software aging. Evolving usage or modifications can contribute to resource exhaustion, but equating aging with runtime slowdown misses the paper’s central concern: long-term usefulness and maintainability.

What consequences does Parnas identify?

Parnas connects the two aging mechanisms to several risks: a product may fail to keep pace with competitors, take more effort to modify, perform less well, or become less reliable. These are consequences in his argument and examples, not present-day measured estimates or universal outcomes. The underlying concern is a feedback loop: as structure and documentation become less trustworthy, change becomes harder; as change becomes harder, adapting to new needs becomes more difficult.

How does Parnas say software can be kept healthier?

Design for likely change

Parnas’s preventive principle is to “design for change.” He discusses information hiding, abstraction, separation of concerns, and data hiding as ways to confine likely changes rather than let them spread through a system. The aim is not to predict every future requirement, but to place boundaries around decisions or components likely to change so that a modification has a limited reach.

  • Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft

Preserve design knowledge

Careful review and documentation matter because future maintainers need more than a description of what the code currently does: they need useful, accurate guidance about its structure and interfaces. Documentation that is out of step with the software can mislead rather than help, so keeping it aligned with the implementation is part of maintenance, not a one-time delivery task.

Improve existing systems selectively

For products already in service, Parnas discusses restraint in adding features, retroactive documentation, restructuring, and, in some cases, replacing sections that are no longer worth preserving. These are options to consider in context, not a blanket instruction to rewrite legacy software. The paper’s point is to protect the product’s long-term health; the appropriate intervention depends on whether the system can be understood and improved at an acceptable cost.

Why does the 1994 paper still matter?

Parnas asks software engineers to look beyond the first release and judge success by the product’s long-term health. His abstract states: “A sign that the Software Engineering profession has matured will be that we lose our preoccupation with the first release and focus on the long term health of our products.” The argument remains a useful lens for separating two questions: is the software adapting to its users and environment, and are changes preserving the structure and knowledge needed for future work?

Later scholarship discusses software evolution and decay, including a 2021 article on the lifetime of fine-grained software elements (PLOS ONE article at PubMed Central). That context does not establish that every intervention Parnas recommends works generally; his paper is best read as a foundational framing of long-term maintenance challenges rather than a current empirical review.
