If you want a Softr alternative, first decide what “own the portal” means: keeping your data in a system you control, hosting the software yourself, controlling its source code, or simply giving clients a branded place to work. Those are different goals. For a hosted portal connected to existing data, compare Softr with Noloco or Jet Admin; for a self-hosted, open-source route, Budibase is the clearest fit in this group, though it leans toward internal tools. None of these choices should be treated as proof of code ownership or a secure setup without checking the exact plan, migration path, and permissions.
Define what you want to own
“Ownership” is not one feature. A platform can let you keep records in an external database while still hosting the portal and controlling its software. Before shortlisting products, identify which kind of control matters most:
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Data control: Where do client records and files live, and can you export or move them?
- Deployment control: Can you run the portal on your own infrastructure, or is it hosted by the vendor?
- Code control: Can you inspect, modify, or export the application code? A visual builder or data connection does not establish this.
- Portability: Can you migrate records, workflows, permissions, and files without rebuilding everything?
- Experience control: Can you brand the portal and shape what clients can see and do?
Compare deployment options, data connections, export paths, permission depth, and external-user charges separately. A vendor-hosted portal connected to your database may solve the shared-folder problem without giving you control of the application code.

Softr describes a portal builder that can use its built-in database or connect to sources such as Airtable, Google Sheets, and Notion. Its product pages describe branded portals, user groups, record and field controls, forms, workflows, PWA delivery, and an AI assistant that follows existing access rules. Listed client-portal uses include onboarding, project tracking, document sharing, approvals, invoices and payments, dashboards, support requests, and self-service resources. These are Softr’s own product claims, not independent security validation. Softr’s client portal overview and product information describe the offering.
#1 Best Overall
Softr also says it is SOC 2 Type II compliant and GDPR-ready, with data hosted in Europe. That vendor-authored statement does not establish that a particular portal configuration or business process complies with a law or contract; assess your own obligations and implementation.
Which alternatives fit which kind of control?
The alternatives solve different problems rather than forming a simple scale from least to most ownership. The comparisons below reflect vendor-authored or third-party descriptions, not hands-on testing. Check current vendor terms, deployment availability, and pricing before committing.
| Option | Best fit | Control and trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Jet Admin | Portals or internal tools built on existing databases, APIs, or data warehouses | A September 26, 2026 comparison describes row-level permissions and enterprise self-hosted, on-premise, or air-gapped deployment. Confirm which tier and requirements apply. Comparison details |
| Budibase | Technical teams that want to run an open-source builder themselves, especially for internal tools and dashboards | A July 16, 2026 comparison describes self-hosting and an open-source model, with a steeper learning curve. Its strongest cited use case is internal tooling, not a turnkey external client portal. Comparison details |
| Noloco | Hosted client or team portals connected to Airtable, HubSpot, or databases | A September 2026 comparison describes record- and field-level permissions and workflow automation. This is a hosted portal-builder alternative, not evidence of self-hosted code ownership. Comparison details |
| Bubble | A more customized visual web application, such as a SaaS-style product | An August 2026 comparison describes hosted data and workflows and says code export is not offered. It is not a direct self-hosting answer. Comparison details |
| Glide | A mobile-friendly app driven by spreadsheet or database data | An August comparison describes installable Progressive Web Apps rather than native app-store binaries. Do not choose it if native binaries are a requirement. Comparison details |
| Adalo | A no-code app where app-store distribution is a real requirement | An August comparison describes publishing native iOS and Android apps. Verify current publishing capabilities and plan requirements. Comparison details |
| Pory | Airtable-powered websites, portals, or directories | A July 2026 comparison positions it as Airtable-oriented and describes a smaller template ecosystem. Comparison details |
Choose by data source and technical capacity
If your records already live in a business system
Start with a portal layer that connects to the database, spreadsheet, CRM, API, or warehouse you already use. Jet Admin and Noloco are described as options for portals over existing data; Softr also supports external sources. Confirm which records, linked objects, and fields can be read or updated, and whether the connection supports the actions your workflow needs.
If you want to host the software yourself
Budibase is the clearest self-hosted, open-source route in this reviewed set, but expect more technical setup and assess whether its internal-tool emphasis suits a client-facing experience. Jet Admin’s cited comparison describes self-hosting, on-premise, and air-gapped deployment at the enterprise level; verify availability and conditions directly with the vendor. A self-hosting option is not the same as owning every component or having an exportable application.
If you need a distinct application or app-store distribution
Bubble may suit a more customized visual web app, but the cited comparison says code export is not offered. Glide is described as delivering installable PWAs, while Adalo is described as supporting native iOS and Android publishing. Those output differences matter only if your clients need them; verify current capabilities and plan boundaries before building around them.

A portal’s safety depends on its data model and access configuration, not just the presence of a permissions feature. A third-party Softr/Airtable implementation guide recommends associating each row with a unique client identifier rather than filtering on a broad category shared by multiple clients. It also recommends testing with two distinct client accounts. This is implementation guidance, not evidence of a Softr vulnerability or an independent audit. Read the implementation guide.
Rank #3
Before launch, test the real client experience, including linked records and uploaded files:
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Each client sees only records assigned to that client.
- Changing or guessing a visible identifier cannot expose another client’s account.
- Uploads and linked records follow the intended access restrictions.
- Staff and client roles have only the permissions designed for them.
- Removing a user or revoking access takes effect as expected.
Use separate test accounts and representative data. A checklist of platform features is not proof that your particular configuration is secure.
Compare plans at the scale you expect
Pricing snapshots and feature limits change, and a low entry tier may not include the capability that made a product attractive. Compare the plan you would actually need—not just the starting offer—against your expected client count and use:
- External client accounts and how they are billed
- Internal builder seats
- Record limits and data-source restrictions
- Workflow, API, or automation allowances
- Self-hosting, on-premise, or air-gapped deployment availability
- Export and migration options for records, files, and workflows
Ask vendors to confirm the relevant tier and terms in writing, particularly for deployment and data portability. The cited comparison sources include snapshots from July, August, and September 2026; they are not a substitute for current pricing or a quote. The comparison page also recommends checking connectivity, workflow depth, record and field permissions, external-user pricing, deployment, and the tier above the one initially quoted.
