Nothing Phone (3a) vs Galaxy A36 5G: Which One Should You Buy?

There is no clear overall winner from the specifications available: the Galaxy A36 5G stands out for its stated software-support commitment and IP67 rating, while the Nothing Phone (3a) has a slightly larger display on paper. Price is the deciding factor only after you compare the same storage configuration in your country; Samsung’s published $399.99 figure was its US launch price, not a current offer or a direct price comparison.

At a glance: the differences that matter

Feature Nothing Phone (3a) Samsung Galaxy A36 5G
Display 6.77-inch FHD+ flexible AMOLED; adaptive refresh up to 120 Hz; HDR10+; up to 3,000 nits peak brightness, according to Nothing’s India product page. 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED; 120 Hz; up to 1,200 nits HBM, according to Samsung.
Processor Not stated in the retrieved official product-page content. Snapdragon 6 Gen 3, according to Samsung.
Rear cameras Nothing’s retrieved product-page content does not establish a complete camera specification for comparison. 50 MP main camera with OIS, 8 MP ultra-wide and 5 MP macro, according to Samsung.
Front camera Not stated in the retrieved official product-page content. 12 MP, according to Samsung.
Battery and charging Not stated in the retrieved official product-page content. 5,000 mAh typical capacity and 45 W charging, according to Samsung.
Software support A comparable update-duration commitment was not established from the official content reviewed. Samsung states up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and six years of security updates.
Dust and water resistance A comparable rating was not established from the official content reviewed. IP67; Samsung says its lab test covers immersion in up to one meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes.

Specifications are manufacturer statements, not independent comparative test results. The Nothing display information is from its India product page; Samsung specifications are from its US and UK materials. Configurations and availability can vary by country.

How much do they cost, and what is the price difference?

A current price gap cannot be established from the available figures. Samsung’s US launch announcement, published March 2, 2025, listed the Galaxy A36 5G at a starting price of $399.99. That is a historical US launch price, not a current selling price. Nothing’s reviewed India product page did not provide a usable price, so these figures do not show which phone is cheaper.

Compare live listings in your country before deciding. Match storage capacity and, where possible, RAM, seller, warranty, taxes and any included charger. A lower price for a smaller-storage configuration is not a like-for-like saving. Regional versions may differ in configurations, supported bands, accessories and features.

Which display is better?

Both makers specify a 120 Hz display. Nothing lists a 6.77-inch FHD+ flexible AMOLED panel with adaptive refresh up to 120 Hz and HDR10+. Samsung lists a 6.7-inch FHD+ Super AMOLED panel with 120 Hz refresh. The size difference is small; the specifications alone do not establish which screen looks better in everyday use.

Brightness figures need particular care. Nothing advertises up to 3,000 nits peak brightness, while Samsung lists up to 1,200 nits HBM. Peak brightness and high-brightness-mode figures are not necessarily measured under the same conditions, so these numbers are not a direct brightness test. If outdoor readability matters, look for independent measurements made under comparable conditions rather than choosing by the larger advertised figure.

Performance and cameras: what the specifications can—and cannot—tell you

Everyday and gaming performance

Samsung identifies the A36 5G’s processor as a Snapdragon 6 Gen 3. The official Phone (3a) content reviewed here does not provide a complete specification sheet, and no independently comparable benchmark or gaming test is established. That is not enough evidence to say one is faster. For demanding games or heavy multitasking, consult tests of the exact regional models and configurations you are considering.

Photo and video results

Samsung lists a 50 MP main camera with optical image stabilization (OIS), an 8 MP ultra-wide camera, a 5 MP macro camera and a 12 MP front camera. These hardware details describe the A36’s camera setup, but megapixel counts do not determine image quality, and no comparable sample-based test establishes which phone takes better photos. Check daylight, indoor, night and video samples from both exact models if camera quality is central to your choice.

Software support and durability

Update commitment

Samsung states that the A36 5G receives up to six generations of Android OS and One UI upgrades and six years of security updates. This is Samsung’s policy statement; it should not be read as a promise that every region receives each update at the same time. A comparable official update-duration commitment for the Phone (3a) was not established in the product information reviewed. If keeping a phone for years is a priority, verify the support policy that applies in your market before buying.

Water and dust protection

Samsung rates the Galaxy A36 5G IP67. Its stated lab conditions are up to one meter of fresh water for up to 30 minutes, and Samsung advises against beach or pool use. The official Phone (3a) content reviewed did not establish a comparable rating, so this comparison cannot confirm equivalent protection. An IP rating also does not make a phone suitable for deliberate water exposure.

Battery life, charging and regional configurations

Samsung specifies a 5,000 mAh typical battery capacity and 45 W charging for the A36 5G. Samsung describes the capacity as a laboratory-tested typical value and notes that actual battery life varies. The reviewed official Nothing content does not provide figures suitable for a matched battery or charging comparison, and no comparable runtime testing is established. Capacity and charging wattage alone do not prove which phone lasts longer between charges.

Before ordering either phone, confirm the exact model and configuration sold locally. RAM and storage options, network bands, charger inclusion, price and features can vary by market and seller; a specification listed for one country should not automatically be assumed for another.

Which phone should you choose?

  • Lean toward the Galaxy A36 5G if Samsung’s stated six-generation OS and six-year security-update policy or its IP67 rating is more important to you than an unverified comparison on speed, photography or battery life.
  • Consider the Phone (3a) if its 6.77-inch display and listed adaptive 120 Hz refresh suit your preferences, and its current local price and regional specifications make sense for you.
  • For ordinary use—social apps, notes, calls and occasional photos—neither set of specifications proves a meaningful everyday-performance winner. Compare current like-for-like prices, then check camera samples and the precise configuration available where you live.
  • For gaming, photography or long battery life, wait for credible comparisons of the exact regional versions rather than treating processor names, camera megapixels or battery capacity as a substitute for real-use results.
