In a September 18, 2026 test of a US-region SofaBaton X2, the remote and app continued several control and setup tasks after internet access was cut. The hub still maintained one encrypted external connection, measured at about 110 bytes per minute. That is evidence about traffic volume in one defined session—not proof of what the encrypted data contained or a complete privacy audit.
Does the SofaBaton X2 hub communicate with external servers?
Yes. In the test, the hub opened one external TLS connection to an AWS IoT endpoint in Northern California. The reviewer also recorded an approximately hourly query to pool.ntp.org, a hostname lookup, and local broadcasts for app discovery. No additional analytics, advertising, CDN, or cloud hosts appeared during the measured session, according to Smart Home Perfected’s September 28, 2026 report.

During button presses, activity execution, syncing, and renaming, the reviewer saw no corresponding increase in the hub’s cloud-connection counters. The report characterizes the connection’s traffic as a heartbeat of about 110 bytes per minute. This was a byte-counter observation: the TLS payload was not decrypted, so the test did not establish what information, if any, was inside it.
What worked when the internet was cut?
With internet access blocked and the hub rebooted, the reviewer reported that the remote and app continued to control a television. The app also allowed the reviewer to rename the device, adjust power behavior, create and run an activity, and sync the remote. A second television was reported as added successfully, but the reviewer could not verify its infrared operation because it was outside IR range.

These results indicate that several already-configured functions worked offline in this test. They do not establish that every device, command, integration, or first-time setup path works without internet.
What happens if the hub loses Wi-Fi?
In a separate test, the powered hub was blocked from Wi-Fi. The remote still operated through its radio link to the hub, but the app could not connect and remained on a spinner. The hub’s indicator changed from green to white. This distinguishes an internet outage from loss of the local Wi-Fi link: the remote-to-hub path remained usable, while app control did not.

Does setup require an account or an internet connection?
The app required account registration or sign-in to set up and control the hub. The reviewer saw setup screens for cloud account access and node association and inferred from them that first pairing depended on internet. The reviewer did not repeat first-time setup with internet unavailable, so that dependence was not independently verified in the test.

In follow-up answers dated September 21–22, 2026, SofaBaton said offline setup can complete while showing a cloud verification error. The company also said cloud backup, voice assistants, and API access remain unavailable until internet access returns. Those are vendor statements, not outcomes independently reproduced by the reviewer.

What network activity came from the phone app?
The app’s traffic should be kept separate from the hub’s. On opening the app, the reviewer observed connections to third-party services, including repeated attempts to contact Agora servers. After the app had settled, the reviewer recorded no external connections during one 20-minute interval; the app communicated with the hub over the local network during that period. This limited observation does not describe every app session or later app version.
What did the test establish about Home Assistant?
SofaBaton described Home Assistant communication as using an MQTT broker configured by the owner and staying on the local network without a cloud round trip. The reviewer observed the hub attempting to reach a local broker, but did not run an end-to-end command test. The local-only behavior is therefore a manufacturer description supported by a partial observation, not a verified integration result.

How the test was scoped—and what it cannot prove
The test used a US-region kit with hub firmware 8, hub Wi-Fi firmware 1.2.15, remote firmware 7, and SofaBaton iOS app 4.1.5. The app offered updates, which the reviewer declined. The findings therefore apply to those in-box software versions, not necessarily later releases.

- The phone and hub were on the same network segment. Their local traffic did not cross the firewall and was not counted. As reviewer Sean Tulloch put it, “The firewall sees traffic that crosses it.”
- The reviewer did not inspect the TLS contents, probe every local hub service, verify all added codes against reachable target devices, or test the Home Assistant integration end to end.
- The test did not cover every Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, dock, or rollback path, nor setup when location or local-network permissions were refused.
- The report’s 20-out-of-25 privacy score is the reviewer’s assessment under the report’s own scoring rubric, not an independently replicated measurement or a certification.
The X2 combines a physical remote and Wi-Fi-connected hub: the remote uses its own radio link to the hub, while the app connects over Wi-Fi. The hub has IR emitters and can use emitter cables for equipment outside the remote’s line of sight. SofaBaton describes the product as supporting IR, Bluetooth, Home Assistant, local IP control, and customizable activities or macros; these manufacturer-described capabilities were not all validated by the privacy bench. Its optional IR repeater was not tested. SofaBaton’s X2 product page, X-series FAQ, Hub Connectivity FAQ, and November 2025 X2 manual describe compatibility and setup details. The FAQ lists Sonos, Philips Hue, and Roku among supported Wi-Fi-connected devices; Roku mobile control must be enabled in Roku settings, and Bluetooth support is device-specific. The manual calls for app sign-in, Bluetooth enabled, and the phone and hub on the same 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network. SofaBaton’s connectivity guidance advises matching subnet and network conditions and warns about guest Wi-Fi and VPN-related setup problems.
The test is best read as an instrumented observation of one configuration and session. It is not a comprehensive security audit, cryptographic assessment, or guarantee about later firmware and app versions.
