“Socket locks” can refer to several impact-socket retention designs: a pin and ring at the wrench anvil, a spring-loaded retainer, a locking-collar extension, or an integrated captive system. The right arrangement depends on where you need the socket held and whether the wrench, retainer, extension, and socket have matching drive sizes and retention features.
What does “socket lock” mean?
In impact-tool terminology, a socket lock is a mechanism intended to keep a socket attached to the wrench or an extension. The name does not identify one universal design. The main difference is where the mechanism retains the socket.

- At the wrench anvil: A pin-and-ring system or a spring-loaded retainer holds a compatible socket directly on the wrench.
- At an extension: A sliding collar can lock a socket to the extension; the extension itself still connects to the wrench.
- Integrated in a system: Some designs use captive pins and a ring as part of a dedicated retention system.
Manufacturers describe these products as retention aids, but the available product information does not establish a universal best mechanism or comparative holding-force, durability, or safety ranking.
How the common retention mechanisms work
Pin and ring or O-ring
This arrangement uses holes in the socket and anvil that line up when the socket is fitted. A pin passes through the aligned holes, while a ring or O-ring sits in a groove to retain the pin. Bosch describes its retaining ring and pin set as a way to secure compatible impact sockets on an impact wrench. Its UK product page lists variants for 1/4-, 3/8-, 1/2-, and 3/4-inch shanks; check the exact local variant and tool compatibility on Bosch Professional’s product page.

Spring-loaded pin retainer
A spring-loaded pin engages a compatible socket or adapter. Chicago Pneumatic describes a retainer ring for larger square-drive sockets and adapters, saying its spring-loaded pin holds the socket securely and reduces the likelihood of it slipping off. That is the manufacturer’s description, not a quantified independent test. The cited product is for a 3/4-inch output drive and a 44 mm internal diameter; verify those dimensions against your equipment on Chicago Pneumatic’s product page.
Sliding locking-collar extension
A locking-collar extension holds the socket at the extension’s socket end rather than directly at the wrench anvil. GEARWRENCH’s 84432N is specified as a 3/8-inch-drive, 3-inch locking impact extension. GEARWRENCH says its sliding collar attaches the socket to the extension; the product page also notes that a pin hole can be used with a pin and O-ring. Confirm your socket and extension match before use: GEARWRENCH 84432N.

Integrated captive retention
GEDORE describes IMPACT-FIX as an integrated captive two-pin retention system with a ring for impact sockets. GEDORE claims its insert cannot fall off or loosen unintentionally, even under extreme vibrations. Treat that as a claim about this named system, not a general guarantee for other socket locks: GEDORE IMPACT-FIX product information.

Check fit before choosing or installing a lock
A matching square-drive size is only one part of compatibility. The socket, wrench, and any extension must also have compatible holes, grooves, pins, rings, and retainer geometry. Do not assume a retention part made for one drive size or system fits another.

- BROAD COMPATIBILITY: Suitable for a range of brands, including Milwaukee, Dewalt, and other electric and pneumatic wrenches, ensuring compatibility with many wrench models.
- Match the square drive: Check the wrench’s output drive and the socket or extension’s drive size.
- Inspect the retention features: For a pin-and-ring arrangement, check that the holes align and the pin and ring fit their intended positions. For a spring-loaded design, confirm the socket or adapter suits the retainer.
- Check socket-end dimensions: A locking extension’s collar and a socket’s drive end must be compatible.
- Use the manufacturer’s fitment information: Product examples are not interchangeable just because they are all impact-rated or described as locking.
For example, DEWALT lists its DWMT19022 as a 3/4-inch-drive, 17 mm impact socket compatible with an O-ring and retaining pin. HAZET lists its 1100S-27 as a 1-inch-drive, 27 mm impact socket with a bore for a locking pin or safety spring and a groove for an O-ring, citing DIN 3129 and ISO 2725-2. These are separate product specifications, not evidence that the sockets or retention parts fit one another. See DEWALT’s DWMT19022 listing and HAZET’s 1100S-27 listing.
