To type the paragraph symbol, insert the pilcrow ¶ (Unicode U+00B6). On Windows Outlook, hold Alt, type 0182 on the numeric keypad, then release Alt. In Word, type 00B6 and press Alt+X. On a Mac, open Character Viewer with Control+Command+Space and search for “pilcrow.”
Be careful not to confuse it with the section sign: pilcrow ¶ marks a paragraph, while section sign § is a different character (U+00A7).

Windows: use an Alt code or Word’s Unicode conversion
In Outlook
- Place the cursor where you want the character.
- Hold Alt and type 0182 using the numeric keypad.
- Release Alt. The pilcrow should appear.
Microsoft lists Alt+0182 for the paragraph sign or pilcrow. Use the numeric keypad rather than the number row. If your laptop has no dedicated keypad, use Word’s conversion or an available character map instead; laptop Fn-layer behavior is not universal. Microsoft’s Outlook keyboard-shortcut list gives the pilcrow code and lists the section sign separately as Alt+0167.

In Word
- Click where the pilcrow should go and type 00B6.
- Press Alt+X to convert the code to ¶.
If the code follows other hexadecimal characters, select only 00B6 before pressing Alt+X so Word does not treat preceding characters as part of the code. You can also use Insert > Symbol > More Symbols and choose the pilcrow; available symbols can depend on the selected font. Microsoft describes the code-conversion method in its Word instructions for inserting ASCII or Unicode character codes.

Mac: find the pilcrow in Character Viewer
- Press Control+Command+Space to open Character Viewer.
- Search for pilcrow or paragraph.
- Select ¶ to insert it.
There is also a hexadecimal method, but it requires setup: add the separate Unicode Hex Input source under Keyboard > Input Sources, switch to it, hold Option, and type 00B6. This is a configured input-source method, not a default shortcut. Unicode documents this method alongside the platform-specific alternatives in its FAQ on fonts and keyboards.
Linux: use Unicode input in GTK desktops
In GNOME and other GTK desktop environments, press Ctrl+Shift+U, release the keys, type 00B6, then press Space or Enter. A character-map app is another option if you prefer to find the symbol visually.

The Ctrl+Shift+U sequence is not standard across all Linux desktops: Unicode notes that KDE and other Qt environments do not have an equivalent standard entry sequence. Check the character picker or input method available in your desktop environment.

iPhone, iPad, and Android: copy or use a symbol picker
For occasional use, copy ¶ from a trusted source and paste it into your text. Some apps or third-party keyboards offer symbol search or custom text replacement, but the available options depend on the app and keyboard. Unicode says iOS and Android do not provide official hexadecimal Unicode input methods.

Inserted character or formatting mark in Word?
A pilcrow typed into a document is a literal text character. Word’s Show/Hide control does something different: it displays or hides formatting marks, including paragraph markers, without inserting a printable pilcrow into the text. If paragraph symbols appear throughout a document unexpectedly, use the Show/Hide paragraph-mark control to hide those visual formatting marks. Microsoft explains the toggle in its instructions for showing or hiding marks in Word.
