An authenticator app is a useful extra login step when passkeys are unavailable, while a physical security key offers a separate hardware factor where the platform supports it. Whichever method you choose, set up a recovery route before you need one.
How the three methods protect your account
Passkeys: phishing-resistant sign-in
A passkey is a public-key credential associated with a particular site or app. Your device or credential manager holds the private part; the service holds the public part. You approve sign-in with a local unlock method such as a PIN, fingerprint, or face recognition. Because the credential is bound to the relying app or site, a fake sign-in page ordinarily cannot use it as if it were the real service’s credential.

Passkeys can be stored on one device or synced across devices through a supported account ecosystem. Sync is convenient, but that ecosystem and its recovery account become part of your security picture: protect them with a strong sign-in method and keep their recovery details current. Services may implement passkeys differently, so check what the platform actually offers. TikTok, for example, has separate instructions for its passkey sign-in flow: TikTok: Log in with a passkey. X describes passkeys as built on public-key cryptography and the WebAuthentication (WebAuthn) standard in its passkey help page.
Authenticator apps: codes as an additional factor
An authenticator app generates or displays a one-time code to enter as an additional login step. That code can help protect your account if someone has stolen your password. It is not equivalent to a passkey’s phishing resistance: a scammer may still persuade you to enter a live code on a fraudulent sign-in page.

TikTok lists authenticator codes as a 2-step verification option and gives Google Authenticator and Microsoft Authenticator as examples; Meta also describes authenticator-app codes as an option for Facebook and Instagram. See TikTok’s account safety guidance and Meta’s Facebook and Instagram account support update.
Physical security keys: a hardware factor
A physical security key is a separate hardware authenticator. Depending on the device and setup, it may connect over USB or NFC. Where a platform supports it, it can provide a strong factor that is not simply a code displayed on your phone. Meta says Facebook supports physical security keys for two-factor authentication and login on desktop and mobile; X’s account-security guidance also identifies security keys. Neither source establishes that every social platform supports them. Check the account settings and device compatibility before choosing a key. - POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5C NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
- WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5C NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
- FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5C NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
- MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
- PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
The labels can overlap: passkeys and hardware security keys can both use public-key authentication, while a platform menu may use “security key” specifically for a hardware token registered as a second factor. Follow the platform’s setup instructions rather than assuming two options with similar names work the same way.

Which option should you choose?
Compare the methods on four practical questions: resistance to phishing, support on the platforms and devices you use, day-to-day convenience, and recovery if a device, key, or synced account is lost.
- Choose a passkey first if the platform offers one on your devices and you have secured the device or sync account. It pairs a familiar local unlock with site-bound authentication.
- Choose an authenticator app if app-based 2-step verification is available but passkeys or hardware keys are not. Protect the phone that holds the app and keep account recovery options current.
- Choose a physical security key if the platform supports it and you want a separate hardware factor. Confirm connector and platform compatibility; enroll a backup key or keep another tested recovery route.
You do not need to use the same method for every social account. Enable the strongest method each platform supports, while keeping an independent way back into the account.

What happens if you lose your phone or security key?
The outcome depends on where your passkey or authenticator credentials are stored and on the platform’s recovery process. A synced passkey may be available from another device in its supported ecosystem, but that depends on access to the ecosystem account. A passkey stored only on a lost device may require another enrolled sign-in method or the service’s account recovery. Losing the phone with an authenticator app can also leave you without codes; losing your only hardware key can leave you unable to use that factor.
Before relying on any method, make sure you can use a backup or recovery option without the primary device or key. If the service offers recovery codes, store them somewhere secure and separate from the device they recover. Keep a verified email address and phone number where available, and review trusted devices and login alerts. These measures improve preparedness; they do not guarantee recovery.

Build a recovery route before you need it
- Enroll a backup security key if you use a hardware key, or add another supported sign-in method.
- Secure the account that syncs your passkeys and confirm its own recovery details work.
- For an authenticator app, check whether the platform provides recovery codes or another factor, and store codes securely if offered.
- Verify your social account’s recovery email and phone number, then review trusted devices and alerts.
- Read the platform’s current recovery instructions. TikTok recommends linking both a phone number and email so one can serve as an alternative if the other is compromised; it also documents a friends-based recovery route. Meta describes adaptive recovery and account-support changes. These are platform-specific processes, not guarantees of successful recovery: see TikTok account safety and Meta account support.
