Snipping Tool vs. Print Screen: Which Windows 11 Screenshot Method Should You Use?

Choose Print Screen for a quick full-screen clipboard image, Windows+Shift+S for selected or editable captures, and Windows+PrtScn to save the whole screen directly.

Use Print Screen for a quick image of the entire screen copied to the clipboard. Choose Windows+Shift+S to select a region or capture a window, then annotate, crop, or save it in Snipping Tool. Press Windows+PrtScn when you want a full-screen screenshot saved directly as a file.

Which screenshot method fits your task?

What you need Use What happens
Copy everything visible quickly Print Screen (PrtSc) Captures a static image of the entire screen and copies it to the clipboard. Paste it into the app where you want to use it. Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions describe this behavior.
Capture only part of the screen Windows+Shift+S Opens the Snipping Tool capture overlay. Choose a freeform or rectangular selection, a window, or the full screen. Microsoft’s instructions list these image modes.
Save the whole screen directly as a file Windows+PrtScn Saves a full-screen screenshot in the Screenshots subfolder of Pictures by default. Microsoft’s Windows keyboard-shortcut reference documents this destination.
Add notes, highlight, or crop Capture with Snipping Tool Open the capture in Snipping Tool to use its pen, highlighter, crop, and save options. Microsoft’s guide explains the available editing actions.
Record an on-screen action as video Windows+Shift+R Starts a Snipping Tool video snip for a selected area. Microsoft’s guidance says the default recording is an MP4 in the Screen Recordings subfolder of Videos. See Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions.

How to capture, edit, and save with Snipping Tool

  1. Press Windows+Shift+S to open the capture overlay.
  2. Choose freeform, rectangle, window, or full-screen mode, then make the capture. Windows copies the image to the clipboard; select the Snipping Tool notification to open the capture for further work.
  3. In Snipping Tool, use the pen or highlighter to mark it up, or crop it if needed.
  4. Choose the save option in Snipping Tool to make a file. Microsoft’s guidance also describes automatic saving to the Screenshots folder and settings for changing automatic-save behavior or the folder; check the app’s current settings if your result differs.

For a timed image capture, Snipping Tool offers a delay of one to five seconds. This can help when you need time to open a menu or arrange something on screen before the capture.

Why Print Screen and Windows+PrtScn are not interchangeable

Although both shortcuts use the Print Screen key, they have different documented outcomes: PrtSc copies a full-screen still to the clipboard, while Windows+PrtScn saves a full-screen image to PicturesScreenshots. Choose based on where you need the image next: use the clipboard route to paste it into another app, or the Windows-key combination to create a file without first pasting.

Windows+Shift+S is another clipboard-based workflow: it opens the capture overlay, where you choose the area or mode. You can then open the capture in Snipping Tool for markup or saving.

If the Print Screen key behaves differently

Keyboard layouts, device shortcuts, and Windows settings can change what the key does. Microsoft notes that some hardware uses Windows logo key+PrtScn as the Print Screen shortcut. Windows can also be configured so the Print Screen button opens screen snipping instead of following the usual clipboard workflow.

  • To check that setting, open Settings > Accessibility > Keyboard and look for the Print Screen button option. Microsoft’s shortcut guidance covers the setting and shortcut behavior.
  • If your keyboard has no PrtScn button, Microsoft’s Windows shortcut reference lists Fn+Windows logo key+Space Bar as an alternative. The exact behavior may depend on the device.
  • If a shortcut does nothing or opens an unexpected tool, check the key legends and the Windows setting above; do not assume every keyboard maps Print Screen identically.

Quick choice

  • Whole screen, clipboard: Print Screen.
  • Selected region, window, or editable capture: Windows+Shift+S, then Snipping Tool.
  • Whole screen, saved file: Windows+PrtScn.
  • Selected area, video: Windows+Shift+R.

These are built-in Windows options; no special keyboard or accessory is needed. Interface details and defaults can change with Windows and Snipping Tool updates, so use current Windows settings if your device differs from the documented behavior.
