LDAP over TLS: LDAPS vs. StartTLS, Ports, and Active Directory Setup

LDAPS starts TLS on a dedicated listener; StartTLS upgrades a regular LDAP connection. Learn which ports to use, how certificate validation works, and why TLS does not replace LDAP signing or channel binding.

LDAPS starts TLS as soon as the client connects, usually on TCP 636; StartTLS begins as LDAP on the usual TCP 389 listener and upgrades that connection after a successful LDAP operation. Either can protect LDAP traffic. The important safeguards are a valid, trusted server certificate, hostname verification, and stopping rather than sending credentials if TLS fails.

What is the difference between LDAP and LDAPS?

LDAP is the directory protocol. StartTLS is an LDAP extended operation that asks the server to add TLS protection to an existing LDAP connection; it is not a separate LDAP version. The client must wait for the server’s successful response, complete the TLS handshake, and only then send more LDAP protocol data, as specified in RFC 4511.

LDAPS is the common name for LDAP over a connection where TLS begins immediately. It uses a dedicated listener, typically TCP 636. With StartTLS, the connection begins as LDAP on the regular listener, typically TCP 389, and is then upgraded. Once TLS is successfully established, both approaches can provide the same kind of transport protection; neither is inherently more secure simply because of its name. Microsoft documents both methods for Active Directory, and OpenLDAP describes the same distinction in its FAQ.

Connection method Typical endpoint How TLS begins
LDAP with StartTLS TCP 389; global catalog TCP 3268 The client connects using LDAP, requests StartTLS, then negotiates TLS after a successful server response.
LDAPS TCP 636; global catalog TCP 3269 TLS negotiation begins immediately when the client connects.

The ports are common Active Directory endpoints, not a guarantee that every directory server or network uses those defaults. See Microsoft’s Active Directory protocol documentation and confirm the listener and firewall configuration in your environment.

Should you use port 389 or 636?

Use the port and connection mode your LDAP client and server are configured to support: LDAP plus StartTLS on the ordinary LDAP listener, or LDAPS on the dedicated TLS listener. For Active Directory global catalog queries, the corresponding common choices are StartTLS on 3268 or LDAPS on 3269. Configure the URI, TLS mode, and port as a matching set.

  • Use an LDAP URI and explicitly request StartTLS when connecting to a regular LDAP port.
  • Use an LDAPS URI when connecting with implicit TLS to a dedicated TLS listener.
  • Do not request StartTLS on an LDAPS listener or use implicit TLS against a plain LDAP listener. These are different connection handshakes, not interchangeable port labels.
  • Check the application or LDAP library’s support for the mode you choose, and ensure firewalls permit the selected endpoint.

There is no universal preference independent of client and server support. If both modes are available and correctly configured, the meaningful security difference is not the label: it is whether TLS is actually established and properly validated.

Why cleartext simple binds are unsafe

A simple bind sends a name and password, so it must not be used on an unprotected connection. RFC 4513 warns that name/password authentication is unsuitable without confidentiality protection and that a session without data integrity and privacy protections can be viewed or modified by a man-in-the-middle.

Require TLS before sending credentials. If StartTLS returns an error, the session has no TLS layer; stop the bind instead of silently continuing with a cleartext simple bind. RFC 4513 recommends disallowing name/password authentication by default where suitable data security is absent. TLS also depends on correct implementation and use: a client that accepts an untrusted certificate or ignores a hostname mismatch can undermine the protection.

How to enable LDAPS in Active Directory

Microsoft’s guidance covers Windows Server 2016, 2019, 2022, and 2025. LDAPS uses TCP 636, or TCP 3269 for global catalog traffic. A domain controller needs a suitable server certificate and clients must trust its issuing chain. Consult Microsoft’s LDAPS certificate requirements for deployment details.

  1. Issue or obtain a server certificate. The certificate must include the Server Authentication EKU, identify the domain controller’s fully qualified domain name (FQDN) in its subject or DNS SAN, have an associated private key, and chain to a CA trusted by both the domain controller and LDAPS clients.
  2. Install it in a supported store. Install the certificate in the Local Computer Personal store or the NTDS store. Microsoft says Active Directory checks the NTDS store first.
  3. Configure the client endpoint. Connect to the domain controller by a name that matches the certificate and use LDAPS on the relevant listener—commonly TCP 636, or TCP 3269 for global catalog traffic.
  4. Verify TLS and certificate validation. Ensure the client trusts the issuer and checks the server name and certificate chain. Do not treat a completed TCP connection as proof that TLS or identity validation succeeded.
  5. Permit the traffic. Confirm that routing and firewall rules allow the chosen LDAPS or global catalog port between client and server.

StartTLS does not require the LDAPS listener: Active Directory uses the regular LDAP port, commonly TCP 389, and the client requests the upgrade. The same core requirement applies: the server must present a certificate the client can validate, and the client must not send credentials until TLS is established.

Does LDAPS replace LDAP signing or channel binding?

No. In Active Directory, LDAP signing and channel binding are separate controls from choosing whether TLS begins immediately or through StartTLS. Microsoft’s LDAP signing and channel-binding guidance treats TLS sessions on LDAPS ports and StartTLS-upgraded sessions on standard ports as TLS sessions, while also addressing signed or encrypted SASL binds.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Review the server policy and the authentication mechanisms your clients actually use, including the relevant signing and channel-binding settings. A TLS listener decision alone does not establish that every client authentication flow meets the domain’s policy.

Why is my LDAP client failing certificate validation?

Separate certificate validation failures from basic connectivity failures. A connection can reach the server and still fail securely because the certificate cannot be trusted or its identity does not match the endpoint. Check these items before considering any change to client validation settings:

  • Name: The hostname used by the client matches the certificate’s subject or DNS SAN.
  • Trust chain: The client trusts the issuing CA and can build the certificate chain.
  • Validity: The certificate is current and has not expired.
  • Server certificate setup: For Active Directory, confirm the Server Authentication EKU, associated private key, and supported certificate store.
  • Revocation and TLS checks: Client behavior can include certificate-revocation-list verification and name checking; Microsoft identifies these as part of TLS clients’ protection against man-in-the-middle attacks.

Do not make disabling certificate validation a permanent workaround. Correct the certificate, name, trust, or client configuration so the client can verify the server.

OpenLDAP configuration considerations

For current OpenLDAP configuration, use the versioned OpenLDAP 2.6 TLS guide for server certificates, CA certificates, private keys, and cipher settings. Protect the server’s private key carefully. The older OpenLDAP FAQ is useful for the basic distinction between StartTLS and an alternative LDAPS listener, but version-specific configuration should follow the 2.6 guide.

Quick troubleshooting sequence

  1. Match mode to endpoint: LDAP plus StartTLS on the regular LDAP listener, or implicit TLS on the LDAPS listener.
  2. Check reachability: Confirm DNS resolution, routing, and firewall access to the selected port.
  3. Verify the TLS handshake: For StartTLS, confirm the server accepts the extended operation before the client proceeds; for LDAPS, confirm TLS begins immediately.
  4. Validate identity: Check the certificate name, validity, trust chain, and private-key setup where applicable.
  5. Fail closed: If TLS or certificate validation fails, do not send a simple-bind password.
  6. Review directory policy: In Active Directory, investigate signing and channel-binding requirements separately from listener selection.
