Then check Do Not Disturb or Focus, and press Windows key + N to see whether the alert arrived in notification center without a banner.
1. Turn on Snipping Tool notifications and banners
- Open Start > Settings > System > Notifications.
- Make sure the main Notifications switch is on.
- Under Notifications from apps and other senders, select Snipping Tool.
- Turn on notifications for the app and enable Show notification banners. Check the notification-center option too if you want alerts to remain listed there.
Windows controls whether an app may send notifications separately from whether those notifications appear as banners or in notification center. A disabled banner setting can therefore explain a missing pop-up even when the app is permitted to notify you. Microsoft describes these controls in its Windows notifications and Do Not Disturb guidance.
2. Check Do Not Disturb and Focus
Do Not Disturb may hide the banner
Open notification center and check whether Do Not Disturb is on. With it enabled, Windows may send notifications to notification center instead of displaying most banners. Microsoft says alarms, reminders, and apps you choose can still show banners. Do Not Disturb can also switch on automatically under configured conditions, including a scheduled time, display duplication, gaming, full-screen app use, or the first hour after a Windows feature update. Review its automatic rules in Settings > System > Notifications.
Focus sessions also affect alerts
A Focus session turns on Do Not Disturb. If you were in a Focus session when you took the snip, check notification center afterward; Microsoft says notifications received during a session can be reviewed there. See Microsoft’s Focus in Windows guidance.
3. Look for the alert in notification center
Press Windows key + N, or select the clock and notification area on the taskbar. If the Snipping Tool alert is listed there, Windows generated it but did not show it as a banner. In that case, revisit the app’s banner setting and Do Not Disturb or Focus state rather than treating the missing pop-up as proof that the screenshot failed.
4. Check whether the screenshot was captured
Microsoft’s Snipping Tool instructions say a notification appears after you finish taking a screenshot; selecting it opens the image in the editor. The screenshot is also copied to the clipboard.

- Try pasting into an app that accepts images, or check clipboard history if you use it.
- Open Snipping Tool and see whether the image is available in the editor.
If the image is present but there is no alert, that separates a notification-display problem from a capture problem, but it does not identify the reason the alert was missing. If there is neither an alert nor a visible image, the cited Microsoft guidance does not establish one universal cause; the issue may need device-specific troubleshooting.

5. If the notification bell icon is missing
A missing taskbar bell is different from a missing Snipping Tool banner. In Windows 11 version 24H2 preview notes dated November 21, 2024, Microsoft documented that Do Not Disturb may hide the notification bell icon. The note says notification center remains available by selecting the date and time, and lists a Show notification bell icon setting under Settings > System > Notifications. This version-specific note concerns the taskbar icon, not whether Snipping Tool can send a notification. See Microsoft’s Windows 11 version 24H2 preview update notes.
