snipmd is a macOS screenshot-to-clipboard OCR tool for people who want to capture an equation, table, or passage of text and put it into notes or technical writing. Its project author describes it as a local-first alternative to Mathpix Snip, with Apple Silicon inference through MLX and an Ollama fallback on other machines. It is not a like-for-like replacement for Mathpix’s broader document and PDF workflows.
What snipmd does
According to project author Arthur031221, snipmd uses a global hotkey to open macOS’s native crosshair selector. After you select part of the screen, the crop is sent to GLM-OCR, processed, copied to the clipboard, displayed in a notification, and saved in a local history file. The author describes the project as free and MIT-licensed. These are the author’s descriptions; check the project article for current setup instructions and release status.

Output options
The described modes are Markdown with inline or block math, bare LaTeX, tables in Markdown or CSV, and plain text using Apple Vision. This makes the tool relevant to different destinations: LaTeX for a paper, Markdown for a note, CSV for a spreadsheet, or plain text when formatting is unnecessary.

How local processing works
The author says snipmd runs inference in-process through MLX on Apple Silicon Macs and uses Ollama as a fallback on other machines. That is the project’s stated processing design, not an independently verified guarantee about every capture or configuration. The available information does not establish minimum hardware requirements. There is no basis here to conclude that a Mac upgrade is necessary.
#1 Best Overall

- A VIBRANT 13-INCH DISPLAY* — The gorgeous Liquid Retina display on MacBook Neo supports 1 billion colors, so photos and videos pop and text is crisp for easy reading.
“Offline” is therefore best understood in the context of the described local inference paths, rather than as a blanket assurance about every part of installation or operation. Check the project’s current documentation for the runtime and model setup that applies to your Mac.
snipmd and Mathpix Snip compared
Both tools address screen capture and recognition, but Mathpix documents a wider product scope. Its materials describe extracting text and math from images and documents; its desktop snipping documentation covers screen-region capture on macOS, Windows, and Linux, while its product information also describes PDF conversion and other STEM-document workflows. snipmd’s described focus is a quick screen selection processed into clipboard-ready output.

| Need | snipmd | Mathpix Snip |
|---|---|---|
| Quick screen-region capture | macOS crosshair selection; output is copied to the clipboard, according to the project author. | Desktop screen snipping documented for macOS, Windows, and Linux; recognized text or LaTeX can be copied to the clipboard, according to Mathpix’s product information and desktop documentation. |
| Processing approach | Author describes MLX inference on Apple Silicon and an Ollama fallback on other machines. | Service-based product; the cited product materials do not establish an equivalent local-inference path. |
| Output and workflow | Described outputs include Markdown with math, LaTeX, Markdown or CSV tables, and plain text. | Designed for text and math extraction into LaTeX or Markdown workflows; product materials also describe document and PDF conversion. |
| Operating systems | macOS. | Desktop screen-capture documentation covers macOS, Windows, and Linux. |
| Cost and license | Project author describes it as free and MIT-licensed; verify current project status. | Current pricing is not established by the cited product documentation; consult Mathpix’s current official pricing information before deciding. |
The comparison is about documented scope, not a claim that the tools achieve the same recognition quality. The cited product materials do not provide a directly comparable independent accuracy test.
What the reported benchmark does—and does not—show
In an article posted October 1, 2026, the project author reports testing 48 rendered equations covering fractions, integrals, matrices, sums, Greek letters, and cases. The author says snipmd matched all 48 after equivalent notation was normalized—for example, treating pmatrix and a raw array as equivalent. The author also reports a median of 0.5 seconds from mouse release to clipboard when the model was already loaded.

These figures describe a small, project-author-reported benchmark, not an independent head-to-head comparison. The timing condition matters: it excludes the time needed to load the model. The results do not guarantee the same accuracy or latency on different hardware, other equation styles, or ordinary documents.
Known limitations to weigh
Handwriting has not been measured
The author does not report a handwriting evaluation, so the equation benchmark should not be treated as evidence that handwritten notes will be recognized reliably.

Multi-column reading order can be wrong
The author says a crop containing a full multi-column page may come back in the wrong reading order because snipmd processes the crop as one image without layout analysis. The stated workaround is to capture one column at a time.

When snipmd is a good fit
- You work on macOS and often need to copy a selected equation, table, or text passage into another app.
- You want the described local inference options and are comfortable checking the model and runtime setup for your machine.
- You need one of the project’s described outputs—LaTeX, Markdown, CSV, or plain text—and can verify OCR results before relying on them.
- Your source is a screen region rather than a full document that needs conversion or layout-aware extraction.
When Mathpix may suit the job better
- You need documented support for Windows or Linux as well as macOS.
- You want a broader workflow for extracting content from documents or converting PDFs, rather than only selecting screen regions.
- You depend on complex page layout or handwriting recognition and need evidence for those cases before choosing a tool. The snipmd author has not measured handwriting and identifies multi-column reading order as a limitation; the cited materials do not provide a directly comparable evaluation.
