The key difference is how much your team wants to own: customizable frameworks offer control over the editing experience, while more packaged editors can supply more of the common authoring interface—but may bring licensing and plan decisions. Compare the document model, workflows, collaboration needs, accessibility evidence, maintenance risk, and deployment terms alongside the feature list.
Which is the best React rich text editor?
The best fit depends on the work your product needs the editor to do and the engineering work your team is prepared to maintain. “React rich text editor” includes customizable frameworks, headless editors, and more packaged products; a toolbar comparison alone can hide how much interface, plugin, document handling, and edge-case behavior remains your responsibility.

For example, Lexical’s documentation describes an extensible framework with official React bindings and plugin-based extension. Slate’s introduction describes a customizable, plugin-first React framework. By contrast, CKEditor 5 documents an official React component and several editor types. These descriptions indicate different levels of abstraction, not a universal ranking or a guarantee that a particular setup meets your requirements.
A useful starting point is to list the actual authoring workflows in your product: which content users create, what they paste or embed, who edits together, and how saved content must be rendered or migrated. Then evaluate the editor and its configured plugins against those workflows.

What should you compare before choosing a React rich text editor?
Compare the responsibility that comes with each capability, not merely whether a feature appears on a vendor’s list.
- Finished UI versus custom work: Determine whether the editor supplies the toolbar and interaction patterns you need, or whether your team will build and maintain them.
- Document model and output: Check how content is represented, persisted, serialized, rendered, and migrated. Confirm that the formats match your application’s requirements.
- Content types: Test the required formatting, embeds, tables, media, and custom nodes, including how they behave when users paste content or edit existing documents.
- Collaboration and persistence: Identify whether simultaneous editing is needed and how document changes must be stored, synchronized, or recovered.
- Maturity and change risk: Review release activity, API stability, and the migration work your team could absorb.
- Licensing and deployment: Confirm whether you will use a hosted or self-hosted setup, what license applies, and whether needed capabilities are included in the relevant plan.
- Accessibility: Review available conformance evidence, then test the integrated application and its configured editor workflows for your users.
Make a small proof of concept using representative documents and workflows. A vendor feature list or a framework’s documented capability does not establish that your configuration handles the product’s specific edge cases.
What is the difference between Lexical and TipTap?
The comparison is primarily about implementation approach and the specific requirements you verify. Lexical’s official documentation presents it as an extensible framework with a framework-agnostic core and official React bindings. A Contentful comparison updated July 23, 2026 characterizes TipTap as a headless, ProseMirror-based editor that gives teams control over the UI. That is a secondary-source characterization; consult TipTap’s current official documentation before relying on details about its features, compatibility, licensing, or price.

Lexical’s documentation lists plugins, an immutable state model, Yjs collaboration integration, and JSON, Markdown, and HTML serialization. It also describes support for content such as tables, lists, code blocks, images, and custom nodes. These are documented capabilities, not a guarantee that every feature is available without configuration or that the editor has been independently tested for your use case. Verify the installed version and chosen plugins.
When considering either option, ask how much of the interface and document behavior your team must supply, whether its document representation fits your persistence needs, and how the chosen integrations will be maintained. The available comparison evidence does not establish a feature-by-feature verdict for every TipTap version or configuration.
Is Slate still in beta?
Slate’s official Introduction, accessed October 4, 2026, says, “Slate is currently in beta,” and warns that APIs may change. Treat that as a project risk to assess, not an automatic reason to reject it.

Slate describes itself as a customizable React framework built around plugins. Its documentation discusses a nested document model and collaboration-ready operations. Before adopting it, evaluate current release activity, the APIs your implementation will depend on, and the migration effort you could face if those APIs change.
Does CKEditor 5 have a React component?
Yes. CKSource’s React guide documents the <CKEditor> component and classic, inline, and decoupled editor types. Confirm which type and configuration suit your UI rather than assuming those options behave identically in your application.
Do I need a CKEditor license key?
For CKEditor 5 starting with version 44.0.0, CKSource says the licenseKey property is required. The same React installation guide says npm self-hosting requires either GPL compliance or a self-hosting license. Check the requirements for your precise version and deployment before implementation.

CKEditor 5 is dual-licensed. CKSource’s license and legal terms describe a GPL 2+ open-source distribution and commercial plans that remove GPL restrictions. Some premium capabilities—including real-time collaboration, Word import/export, PDF export, and CKBox—depend on plan and deployment; do not assume they are included in every option. Confirm the terms that apply to your use before selecting an edition.
Which editor supports collaboration?
Lexical’s documentation describes collaboration through Yjs integration, while Slate discusses collaboration-ready operations. These are documented building blocks, not a complete assurance that your application has the collaboration behavior it needs. Confirm synchronization, persistence, conflict handling, and recovery for your chosen setup.
Recommended Free Tools
CKEditor 5 lists asynchronous and real-time collaboration among premium capabilities, with availability depending on plan and deployment. Teams should compare the collaboration model and commercial terms alongside implementation responsibilities; the word “collaboration” alone does not establish that two products provide equivalent workflows.
How should you assess accessibility claims?
CKSource’s accessibility page states that CKEditor 5 conforms to WCAG 2.2 levels A and AA and Section 508 unless exceptions appear in its Accessibility Conformance Report. The page, accessed October 4, 2026, lists a VPAT for CKEditor 5 v44.3.0 dated March 5, 2025.
This is the vendor’s statement, not independent proof that every integration is conformant. Review the current report and test the configured editor within your application against the accessibility needs of your users.
