The Helio G81 is a 4G chipset with an octa-core CPU and Mali graphics. Benchmark results vary by source and by phone, however, so neither chipset guarantees a particular everyday speed or gaming experience.
At a glance: 5G is the clearest difference
Qualcomm lists 5G NR for the Snapdragon 4s Gen 2, with a theoretical peak download rate of up to 1 Gbps. That is a platform capability, not a speed a buyer should expect everywhere: the phone must support the relevant bands, and real performance depends on carrier coverage and network conditions. MediaTek’s official Helio G81 specifications list 4G technologies and LTE Cat-4, not 5G.

For a buyer specifically seeking an entry-level 5G phone, the Snapdragon platform is the more suitable choice on the specifications reviewed. The Xiaomi Redmi A4 5G is one handset identified as using Snapdragon 4s Gen 2; check the exact regional model and supported bands before buying.
Specifications compared
| Specification | Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 | MediaTek Helio G81 |
|---|---|---|
| Cellular | 5G NR; Qualcomm lists peak download up to 1 Gbps as a theoretical capability. Qualcomm | 4G technologies; LTE Cat-4. MediaTek |
| CPU | 64-bit Kryo CPU, up to 2 GHz per Qualcomm. NanoReview describes the configuration as 2 × Cortex-A78 plus 6 × Cortex-A55. NanoReview | 8 cores: 2 × Cortex-A75 plus 6 × Cortex-A55. MediaTek’s page gives inconsistent A55 maximum clocks: 1.8 GHz in its prose and 1.7 GHz in its specification list, so an exact clock is not stated here. MediaTek |
| GPU | Adreno; NanoReview identifies it as Adreno 611. NanoReview | Mali-G52 MC2, up to 820 MHz. MediaTek |
| Process | 4 nm, according to Qualcomm. Qualcomm | 12 nm, according to NanoReview; the MediaTek product page consulted does not state a process node. NanoReview |
| Memory and storage support | Qualcomm lists UFS 3.1 support. A phone’s actual storage configuration depends on its maker. Qualcomm | MediaTek lists eMMC 5.1; NanoReview also lists UFS 2.1, which is not confirmed on the official MediaTek page consulted. The handset configuration can differ. MediaTek NanoReview |
| Display and media | Qualcomm describes FHD+ display support; a maximum pixel matrix is not stated on the product page consulted. Qualcomm | MediaTek lists display support up to 2520 × 1080 and specifies video encoding and decoding capabilities. MediaTek |
| Wi-Fi and Bluetooth | Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.1. Qualcomm | Wi-Fi 5 and Bluetooth 5.0. MediaTek |
The CPU core configurations point to different performance-core generations, but core names alone do not establish how fast a finished phone will feel. Cooling, software, memory, storage and manufacturer tuning all affect results. Similarly, GPU model and clock specifications are not a substitute for matched-phone gaming tests; the available comparisons do not establish a universal gaming winner.

Benchmark results: what the numbers show
The following results are third-party benchmark data, not manufacturer claims. NanoReview’s comparison page, viewed in 2026, reports these scores with Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 first:
| Benchmark | Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 | Helio G81 |
|---|---|---|
| AnTuTu 11 | 506,757 (2 Snapdragon tests displayed) | 358,608 (43 Helio tests displayed) |
| Geekbench 6 single-core | 838 (fewer than 3 Snapdragon tests displayed) | 432 (11 Helio tests displayed) |
| Geekbench 6 multi-core | 1,899 (fewer than 3 Snapdragon tests displayed) | 1,416 (11 Helio tests displayed) |
| PCMark 3.0 | 8,594 (fewer than 3 Snapdragon phones tested) | 8,824 (12 Helio phones tested) |
NanoReview’s comparison shows a directional CPU advantage for Snapdragon in its Geekbench 6 results, while PCMark 3.0 is a near comparison in which Helio scores slightly higher. The small Snapdragon sample counts mean these figures should not be treated as a prediction for every phone.

Which chipset should you choose?
- Choose a Snapdragon 4s Gen 2 phone if 5G matters. It is the only one of these platforms for which the manufacturer lists 5G NR. Verify that the particular phone supports your carrier’s bands.
- Consider a Helio G81 phone if 4G meets your needs. It offers an octa-core CPU, Mali-G52 MC2 graphics and MediaTek-listed HyperEngine gaming features, but those specifications do not establish how a particular game will run.
- Compare the complete phones, not just the chips. RAM, storage type and capacity, cooling, display, battery, software support and price may matter more to your experience than the processor name. The available benchmark evidence does not establish a controlled, universal winner for gaming or battery life.
