Then compare Wi‑Fi with mobile data, refresh Snapchat and your phone, and test the camera or microphone in another app to narrow down the cause.
Start with the symptom
Identify what is failing before changing settings: does the call fail to start or connect, can the other person not see your video, or is audio missing? If Snapchat itself is freezing or crashing, skip to the app-refresh steps below.

To start a video chat, open a Chat or Group Chat and tap the movie-camera icon. Snapchat Support says a video chat can include one friend or a group of up to 15 friends: How to Start a Video Chat on Snapchat.

Check Snapchat’s camera and microphone permissions
Camera access is needed to send video, and microphone access is needed to send your voice. Check the permission that matches the missing feature; if both are unavailable, review both settings. Snapchat’s guides explain how to review its permissions on Android and iPhone.

Android
- Open Settings > Apps > Snapchat > Permissions. Menu labels can vary by phone and Android version.
- Allow Snapchat to use Camera and Microphone while using the app, if those options are shown.
- If you cannot find the controls on Snapchat’s app page, look in Android’s permission settings by permission type. Google documents both ways to change app permissions in its Android app permissions guide.
- Return to Snapchat and try the call again.
iPhone
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Camera and allow Snapchat access.
- Go back, open Microphone, and allow Snapchat access there too.
- Reopen Snapchat and retry the call. Apple describes these controls in its guide to controlling access to hardware features on iPhone.
Compare Wi‑Fi with mobile data
Switch from Wi‑Fi to mobile data, or from mobile data to Wi‑Fi, and try the call again. Snapchat recommends this comparison when troubleshooting camera problems because connection issues can affect camera behavior. If calls work on one network but not the other, Snapchat advises contacting the relevant internet or mobile provider for further network support. See Snapchat’s camera troubleshooting tips.
Refresh Snapchat and your phone
Close Snapchat completely, reopen it, and retry the call. If the problem continues, check Google Play or the iOS App Store for an update, install one if available, and restart your phone. Snapchat includes closing and reopening the app, checking for updates, and restarting the device among its troubleshooting steps for an app that is not working correctly or is crashing and for camera issues.

Find out whether the problem extends beyond Snapchat
Try the camera in your phone’s camera app. To check microphone input, make a short recording with the native camera or use a voice recorder, then play it back. If the camera or sound also fails in another app, the issue may extend beyond Snapchat; this test alone does not identify a specific hardware fault.

Report a problem that persists
If the permissions are correct, the network comparison and refresh steps have not helped, and the feature still behaves abnormally, report the issue to Snapchat. In the app, open Settings > Bugs and Suggestions > Report a Bug. Wording may differ across app versions.
