To track an SMS security alert, save the messaging provider’s message ID against your alert, accept authenticated status callbacks, and reconcile messages that remain unresolved using the provider’s lookup or reporting tools. An API request accepted or queued is not proof that a carrier delivered the text—and a delivery receipt cannot prove that a resident saw or acted on it.
What an SMS delivery status does—and does not—tell you
Provider statuses describe stages in message processing. Their meanings depend on the provider and, in some cases, the carrier’s ability to return a final receipt.

- Accepted or queued: The provider accepted the request for processing. It does not establish that a carrier or handset received the message. Vonage says a successful SMS API response with status
0means the message was successfully queued, not that it reached the recipient (Vonage delivery receipts). - Sent or submitted: The message has progressed beyond the initial request, but this may still fall short of a final delivery receipt. Twilio defines
sentas confirmation that its network partner accepted the message. - Delivered: A carrier delivery report indicates delivery; the exact confirmation available varies. Twilio describes this as carrier confirmation and, where available, confirmation from the destination handset. It is not evidence that a person read the alert.
- Undelivered, rejected, or failed: The provider reports an unsuccessful outcome. Preserve the provider’s raw status and any error code so support and retry decisions have useful detail.
- Pending or unknown: No final outcome is available yet. Some messages can remain at
sentif a carrier does not return a final update.
Twilio says a sent status may change to delivered or undelivered within seconds or minutes, but some messages do not receive a final carrier update (Twilio Message status values). Vonage likewise cautions that a delivery receipt is not an absolute guarantee. Neither status establishes resident awareness or incident response.

A callback lets your application receive status changes without repeatedly asking the provider. A lookup or report helps investigate a particular message or reconcile records when a callback was delayed, missed, or left the message in an intermediate state.

| Provider | Status event mechanism | Reconciliation option | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Twilio | Outbound status callbacks sent to an HTTP endpoint; the callback includes fields such as MessageStatus and ErrorCode. |
Retrieve a Message resource using its SID. | Callback fields vary by channel and event and may evolve. See Twilio outbound message status tracking. |
| Vonage | Messages API status-change callbacks; SMS API delivery receipts can also be sent to a webhook. | Reports API records can include per-message status. | Keep the provider’s message UUID and raw status. See Vonage Messages API tracking and Vonage SMS delivery receipts. |
| AWS | SNS documentation describes delivery-status logging to CloudWatch Logs for specified endpoint types; AWS End User Messaging SMS documentation describes delivery events. | Use the reporting or event facilities of the specific AWS SMS service and architecture. | The SNS logging documentation is not a universal callback specification for an application endpoint. Confirm the exact service, event destination, and schema in the relevant SNS SMS delivery-status logging documentation and AWS End User Messaging SMS event destination documentation. |
These documented mechanisms are not a comparative delivery-rate benchmark. Before selecting a provider, verify the status vocabulary, final-state availability, error detail, signature validation, acknowledgment and retry behavior, reporting, carrier coverage for your markets, and operational cost for your account and region.
Model status without losing provider detail
Keep your application’s alert lifecycle separate from the provider’s message lifecycle. A practical internal model can begin with accepted/queued, sent/submitted, delivered, undelivered/rejected, failed, and unknown/pending. Map provider values into these categories for product displays, but store the original status and error data as well. Twilio and Vonage do not use identical status vocabularies, and providers may add or vary callback fields.

Persist a durable relationship between each security alert and each provider message. For example, a single alert sent by SMS to multiple residents may produce multiple provider message IDs; model each delivery separately rather than assigning one status to the whole alert.
- Store your alert ID, recipient or destination reference, provider name, provider message ID, and creation time.
- Record each callback as an event with its received time, provider-reported time when present, raw status, and error code or other relevant detail.
- Maintain a current status for display, updated from recorded events, while retaining history for audit and troubleshooting.
- Keep the provider’s raw status even when your mapping does not recognize it; treat unfamiliar values as safely unresolved rather than crashing or falsely marking an alert delivered.
This schema is an implementation approach, not a vendor-mandated format. Twilio identifies its Message SID and callback status fields, while Vonage documents a message UUID and delivery status in callback data.

Implement a callback endpoint that is secure and resilient
Configure a publicly reachable HTTPS endpoint in the provider’s message or webhook settings. Twilio’s tracking guide uses an HTTP POST callback, with form-encoded fields. Vonage documents POST callbacks for Messages API status events and requires the endpoint to acknowledge them with HTTP 200 or 204.
- Receive the provider request. Parse the encoding and fields documented for that specific API. Do not assume every channel or event has the same payload.
- Validate authenticity. Verify the request using the provider’s supported signature-validation method before trusting its status or changing an alert. Twilio recommends SDK-based validation because callback parameters can vary and evolve (Twilio webhook security). Vonage documents signed webhooks in its webhook concepts documentation.
- Find the associated message. Use the provider message ID to load the durable record linked to your alert. If no matching record exists, log and safely handle the event rather than attaching it to an unrelated alert.
- Record and apply the event idempotently. Save the callback and update the current state without allowing duplicate delivery or out-of-order callbacks to corrupt the record. Preserve unknown fields and statuses for later inspection.
- Acknowledge promptly. Return the success response the provider expects after the event has been safely recorded. Vonage specifies HTTP 200 or 204 for acknowledgment. Avoid doing slow downstream work synchronously in the request path.
Callback properties can change over time. Parse known fields defensively, tolerate extra fields, and make unrecognized statuses visible to operations rather than interpreting them as success. For Twilio’s callback-specific behavior and setup, see its outbound status tracking guide.

Reconcile messages that never reach a final status
Define an application-specific threshold for messages that remain queued, sent, submitted, or otherwise unresolved longer than expected. When that threshold is exceeded, query the provider’s Message resource or reporting facility where available. Twilio supports retrieval by Message SID; Vonage’s Reports API can return records including per-message status. AWS teams should use the event and reporting functions of the specific SMS service rather than assuming SNS logs are a universal per-message application callback.

If reconciliation still yields no final carrier result, retain an unknown or pending state. Do not convert missing evidence into delivered or failed. Operational dashboards can distinguish a confirmed provider outcome from a timeout or absent receipt, helping teams decide whether to investigate or use another contact channel under their own escalation policy.

Present delivery state honestly in a security product
Label the stage the provider actually reported—for example, “queued,” “sent,” “delivered,” or “delivery status unavailable”—and explain that carrier confirmation is not a read receipt. A home security SaaS should not tell customers that a resident was notified merely because the API accepted a request, nor imply that “delivered” means the alert was seen or acted on.
SMS status is one operational signal, not a substitute for an incident workflow. If your product offers additional notification channels or escalation rules, define them separately; the status callback alone cannot establish whether an alarm was handled.
