Beyond Single Sensors: How AI Multimodal Fusion Can Support Grid Maintenance

AI multimodal fusion can bring operational data, asset context and inspection evidence into a broader maintenance workflow. Here is what the research supports, where its limits are, and why extra sensors alone do not guarantee better decisions.

AI-driven multimodal fusion combines different kinds of evidence—such as equipment measurements, asset records, weather context and inspection images—to help utility teams screen for problems, investigate likely causes and prioritize inspections. It can give decision-makers a broader view than any one sensor or data feed, but more inputs do not automatically mean a more accurate diagnosis or a guaranteed maintenance outcome.

What multimodal fusion means for grid maintenance

“Multimodal” means using more than one type of data. A maintenance workflow might consider operating measurements alongside an asset’s history, local weather and images from a drone or ground inspection. A model or analysis process can assess those signals together rather than treating each as an isolated clue.

The purpose is decision support: help a planner or engineer decide what to inspect, where to investigate, or which condition deserves attention first. The International Energy Agency (IEA) groups grid AI tasks into forecasting, detection, diagnosis, screening and prioritization, simulation, and optimization. These are distinct jobs; detecting an unusual signal, for example, is not the same as establishing its cause or deciding what maintenance to perform.

The IEA says lower-risk uses—including forecasting, maintenance, inspection and planning tools—are scaling first because they improve decisions and workflows without directly controlling the power system. In its 2026 report, Modernising Grids in the Age of Electricity, the IEA puts it this way: “Lower-risk AI applications, such as forecasting, maintenance, inspection and planning tools, are scaling first because they improve decisions and workflows without directly controlling the power system.”

What data can be combined

Useful inputs depend on the asset and the question being asked. Grid AI can draw on operational, asset, weather, imagery and customer data, according to the IEA. For visual condition screening, the IEA identifies drone, satellite, LiDAR and inspection imagery as possible sources. Vision models may help flag vegetation encroachment, ice sleeves, wear, corrosion, fatigue or storm damage. The IEA describes image analysis as potentially faster, and in some cases more precise, than manual review; that is a general synthesis, not a guarantee for every asset, image set or inspection program.

The National Laboratory of the Rockies describes research capability in which vision models process high-resolution imagery from drones, ground cameras, and satellite or aerial sources to capture information about grid assets, including possible physical wear. That description establishes an area of research, not a quantified field trial.

Operational measurements offer another view. A U.S. Department of Energy page surfaced as 2022 reported that phasor measurement units (PMUs) had been deployed at over 2,500 locations across the U.S. bulk power system. The same page described eight projects selected in 2019 to explore big data, AI and machine learning on PMU data for improved grid operation and management. The 2,500-plus figure is the DOE page’s historical report, not a current deployment count.

Examples of fusion research and grid AI

Published examples span several tasks and levels of evidence. They should not be read as proof that a single, universal system is already deployed across utilities.

Approach Inputs and task What the evidence establishes
Visual screening (IEA, 2026) Drone, satellite, LiDAR and inspection imagery; identify possible asset or environmental conditions for review. The IEA describes these as grid AI capabilities and potential inspection uses; it does not make every result universal.
Transmission-line inspection framework (IEEE conference abstract, 2026) Visual defects, thermal anomalies, corona-discharge regions and spatial-clearance risks; intended for defect detection, anomaly localization and risk assessment. A proposed framework with reported experiments, as described in the abstract. It does not establish broad utility deployment or independently comparable field performance.
Outage location in looped distribution systems (peer-reviewed paper, 2025) Multiple evidence sources and network structure, analyzed with probabilistic graph methods to locate outages. The National Laboratory of the Rockies record reports validation on two modified public test systems. That bounded test result does not guarantee performance across real networks.
Transformer fault-diagnosis proposal (IEEE conference abstract, 2026) Vibration, acoustic-emission, dissolved-gas-analysis and partial-discharge measurements, with proposed edge inference. The abstract presents a proposed approach but does not provide enough detail for a comparative performance claim or establish field adoption.
PMU data projects (U.S. Department of Energy page surfaced as 2022) Operational synchrophasor data; projects explored AI and machine learning for grid operation and management. The DOE page gives historical deployment context and describes eight projects selected in 2019; it is not a current PMU count or proof of a particular maintenance system.

Can combining thermal and visual inspections find line problems earlier?

It can give an inspection process complementary cues to assess. The 2026 IEEE transmission-line framework names visual defects, thermal anomalies, corona-discharge regions and spatial-clearance risks as inputs for detection, localization and risk assessment. A visual image may show a physical defect, while thermal evidence can point to an anomaly that is not apparent in an ordinary image. The value comes from interpreting cues in context, not merely collecting them.

The available abstract describes a proposed method and reported experiments. It does not establish that utilities broadly use this framework, that fusion consistently finds faults earlier than a single modality, or that it performs better in the field under all conditions. A thermal camera—handheld or otherwise—collects thermal evidence; owning or using one does not itself provide AI fusion, diagnosis or a maintenance recommendation.

Can AI predict when a power transformer needs maintenance?

AI can support condition screening and diagnosis when relevant measurements and asset context are available, but the evidence summarized here does not establish a dependable, general-purpose transformer maintenance predictor. The 2026 IEEE conference abstract describes a proposed diagnosis approach combining vibration, acoustic emissions, dissolved-gas analysis and partial-discharge measurements, with edge inference. It does not provide enough detail to compare its performance with other methods or establish operational adoption.

For a utility considering such a workflow, the practical question is not simply whether a model can label an anomaly. The team also needs to know how the output relates to the equipment’s condition, what evidence supports that interpretation, and what inspection or engineering review should follow. Diagnosis and maintenance scheduling remain separate decisions.

What data utilities need for predictive maintenance

There is no single required sensor bundle for every asset. A useful set of inputs is determined by the maintenance question, the asset type and the reliability of the available records. The IEA’s categories suggest a broader data landscape:

  • Operational data: measurements that show how equipment or the network is behaving, including PMU data in the DOE project context.
  • Asset information: records that identify equipment and provide context for interpreting its condition.
  • Inspection evidence: imagery or other observations collected in the field, including drone, satellite, LiDAR and ground-camera imagery described by the IEA and the National Laboratory of the Rockies.
  • Environmental context: weather information that can help interpret conditions affecting assets or inspection observations.
  • Other utility data: customer data is among the data types the IEA notes grid AI may draw on; whether it is relevant depends on the task.

More sources help only when the information is usable and relevant. Poorly aligned records, missing observations or signals that do not answer the maintenance question can make an output harder to interpret. The IEA points to growing computing capability and data availability as enabling larger, more diverse datasets, while its guidance on grid AI emphasizes validation and governance.

Does adding more sensors make grid maintenance more accurate?

No—not by itself. Additional sensors can contribute useful perspectives, but the sources here do not provide a consistent head-to-head test showing that a particular fusion approach is more accurate than a single-sensor method. Accuracy depends on whether the inputs are reliable, relevant to the asset and interpreted appropriately for the task. Fusion should be evaluated against the specific decision it is meant to support, rather than treated as an automatic upgrade.

Evidence maturity also matters. A proposed conference framework, a result on modified public test systems, an institutional description of research capability and an operationally validated utility deployment are not equivalent evidence. The examples in the table illustrate different research settings; they do not support ranking architectures or products against one another.

How to introduce fusion into an inspection workflow

A utility can treat a model’s output as a prompt for review, not as a maintenance order. A practical workflow should make the handoff from data to human decision explicit:

  1. Define the decision. Specify whether the system is meant to screen assets for inspection, detect anomalies, help diagnose a cause, locate an outage or prioritize work. Do not conflate those tasks.
  2. Choose relevant evidence. Select the operational measurements, asset records, imagery or environmental context that can inform that decision. Adding a stream without a clear purpose can add complexity rather than insight.
  3. Validate inputs and outputs. Check that data are fit for the intended use and that model results have been validated for the relevant assets and operating context. A research result on a limited test system does not establish performance on a utility’s own network.
  4. Keep review and accountability visible. Give planners, engineers or operators a way to assess the evidence behind an alert and decide what action, if any, follows.
  5. Plan for errors and interruptions. Define fallback behavior if inputs are missing or the model is unavailable, and make errors detectable and recoverable before the workflow is relied upon.
  6. Reassess governance as the role expands. The IEA says validation, explainability, cybersecurity, fallback rules and accountability requirements become more stringent as AI moves from workflow support toward automated control.

This distinction is important: an inspection-prioritization aid that a human reviews is not the same thing as a model that changes grid operations. The closer an AI system gets to control, the greater the operational and governance burden.
