smartsound.dll is a third-party SmartSound Quicktracks file, not a Windows component. If it is missing or will not load, repair the video or multimedia application that installed Quicktracks instead of downloading a replacement DLL.
What this file actually does
smartsound.dll is identified as SmartSound COM Object, a component of SmartSound Quicktracks from SmartSound Software Inc. Quicktracks provides music and audio functionality that has been integrated into various multimedia products.

The file may be used by older versions of:
- Corel and Ulead VideoStudio
- Ulead MediaStudio
- Adobe Premiere integrations
- Pinnacle Studio
- CyberLink multimedia software
- Roxio products
- Other licensed applications that bundled SmartSound technology
The filename alone cannot identify the exact program on your computer. It only tells you that an application is trying to load the SmartSound Quicktracks component.
This is also not a normal Windows file. It should not be restored with a Windows System32 download, and sfc /scannow normally cannot recreate it. The correct repair target is the parent application or its Quicktracks installation.
#1 Best Overall
- PLUG IN AND HEAR SOUND IN SECONDS - USB Type-A connector with a 3.5mm stereo headphone output and a separate 3.5mm mono microphone input. No drivers, no software, no external power - the adapter is USB bus-powered and is recognized as a standard USB audio device.
- WORKS ON WINDOWS, MAC AND LINUX - Driverless on Windows 98SE/ME/2000/XP/Server 2003/Vista/7/8, Linux and Mac OSX, and compliant with the USB Audio Device Class 1.0 specification, so any system that supports class-compliant USB audio will see it. Select it as the sound output and input device after plugging it in.
- TWO JACKS, TWO JOBS - The green jack is stereo OUT for headphones or powered speakers; the pink jack is mono microphone IN for a 3.5mm mic. It does NOT support 4-pole headsets on a single combo plug, it does NOT power passive speakers, and it does NOT add surround sound - it is a stereo 2-channel adapter.
- FOR LAPTOPS AND DESKTOPS THAT NEED AN AUDIO PORT BACK - Adds a headphone and mic port to a laptop, desktop, or mini PC whose onboard jack has failed or was never there. Managed and work-issued computers can block new USB audio devices by policy - check with your IT department before ordering for a company machine.
- SABRENT SUPPORT AND WARRANTY - What is in the box: one USB audio sound adapter. Backed by a 1-year limited warranty, extended to 2 years when you register within 90 days on the manufacturer's website.
Evidence for this file points to a legacy Win32, or 32-bit, component. That matters if an older 32-bit video editor is running on 64-bit Windows 10 or Windows 11. A 32-bit application can run on 64-bit Windows, but it still needs the correct 32-bit DLL and compatible supporting files.
smartsound.dll errors and what they usually mean
The wording varies by the application and Windows loader, but these are representative messages:
| Error or symptom | Most likely cause | First action |
|---|---|---|
| “smartsound.dll was not found” | Quicktracks or the parent application was removed or damaged | Repair or reinstall the parent application |
| “The program can’t start because smartsound.dll is missing” | The application cannot find its bundled component | Check the application folder, then reinstall it |
| “Error loading smartsound.dll” | A dependency, path, architecture or version problem | Repair Quicktracks and check antivirus history |
| “smartsound.dll is missing or corrupted” | Damaged installation or quarantine | Reinstall the signed component |
| “The specified module could not be found” | The DLL may exist, but another dependency is missing | Repair the application and inspect the full error |
| “Not designed to run on Windows” | Wrong architecture, damaged binary or incompatible legacy build | Install the matching application release |
| Error began after an uninstall | A shared component or registration was removed | Reinstall the application that still needs Quicktracks |
| Error appears after cleanup software ran | The DLL or supporting files may have been deleted | Restore through the original installer |
Fix 1: Repair or reinstall the parent application
This is the most likely fix because smartsound.dll belongs to application software, not Windows.
Before changing anything, note the name of the program in the error message. Look for a video editor, DVD authoring program, media suite or audio tool that launches immediately before the error appears.
Windows 11
- Press Windows + I to open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Installed apps.
- Find the affected video or multimedia application.
- Select the three-dot menu beside it.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Start the application again.
Repair normally keeps the application and its user data while replacing damaged program files. If the error remains, return to the same screen and choose Reset only if you have backed up projects, presets and custom media libraries. Reset behavior differs between applications and can remove local settings.
Windows 10
- Open Settings.
- Select Apps.
- Select Apps & features.
- Select the affected application.
- Choose Advanced options, if available.
- Select Repair.
- Reopen the application.
If Windows does not offer Repair, open Control Panel:
- Press Windows + R.
- Type
appwiz.cpl. - Press Enter.
- Select the affected program.
- Choose Change, Modify or Repair, depending on what the installer provides.
- Complete the wizard and restart Windows.
If repair fails:
- Back up project files and custom presets.
- Uninstall the affected application.
- Restart Windows.
- Reinstall it from the original installer, installation media or the software publisher’s official support/download page.
- If the installer offers SmartSound, Quicktracks or music-library components, install the matching component.
- Start the application and test the feature that previously failed.
Do not automatically install the newest Quicktracks package over an old video editor. SmartSound releases have been product-specific, and an older Premiere, VideoStudio or Pinnacle installation may require a particular Quicktracks generation. The application’s original installer or the publisher’s product-specific update is safer than mixing releases.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How to tell it worked: the application opens without the DLL message, and its SmartSound, scoring or music feature loads normally. If the program opens but the audio feature remains unavailable, the main application may be repaired while the Quicktracks integration is still missing.
Fix 2: Check whether antivirus quarantined the file
Security software can remove a legitimate old DLL if it considers the file suspicious, damaged or behaviorally unusual. Do not restore a quarantined DLL blindly, especially if you do not recognize the parent application.
Check Windows Security
- Open the Start menu.
- Type Windows Security and open it.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Select Protection history.
- Review recent detections.
- Look for an item referring to
smartsound.dllor the multimedia application. - Expand the entry and note the original file path and detection name.
If the file was quarantined, verify that:
- The path belongs to the known application.
- You still intentionally use that application.
- The file came from the original installer.
- The application publisher and installation are legitimate.
The safer response is usually to reinstall the application so that its signed or original component is restored. Scan the replacement after installation. Only use Restore or Allow on device when you have verified the file and understand the security consequence.

If you suspect malware:
- Open Windows Security.
- Select Virus & threat protection.
- Choose Scan options.
- Run a Full scan.
- If the concern remains, use Microsoft Defender Offline scan.
How to tell it worked: Protection history no longer shows the legitimate component being removed, and the application starts after reinstalling it. If the file is quarantined again, stop restoring it and contact the application publisher.
Fix 3: Confirm the application and DLL architecture match
A common indexed build of smartsound.dll is associated with legacy 32-bit software. That does not mean 64-bit Windows is incompatible. It means the 32-bit application must receive the 32-bit Quicktracks component it was built to use.
Do not solve this by searching for an “x64 smartsound.dll.” No authoritative source here confirms a separate 64-bit build, and an invented replacement can make the application less stable.
Identify whether the application is 32-bit
- Start the affected application.
- Press Ctrl + Shift + Esc to open Task Manager.
- Select Details.
- Right-click a column heading.
- Select Select columns.
- Enable Platform, if Windows provides that column.
- Check whether the process is listed as 32-bit.
On some Windows versions, a 32-bit process is marked with (32 bit) in the Processes or Details view.
You can also inspect the installation location. Older 32-bit programs are often installed under:
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →C:Program Files (x86)
That path is a clue, not proof. Do not move the DLL between Program Files, Program Files (x86), System32 or SysWOW64.
Install the matching release
Use the original installer or the application publisher’s official update. Select the Quicktracks or SmartSound option if the installer presents optional components. For older products, a product-specific archived update may be required.
How to tell it worked: the application loads the component without an architecture or loader error. If the message says the file is not designed to run on Windows, reinstall the exact application release rather than trying a DLL from another product.
Fix 4: Check for a missing dependency
The error may mention smartsound.dll, while the real failure is a supporting module that the DLL needs. Windows can report “The specified module could not be found” even when the named DLL is present.

Only install Microsoft Visual C++ Redistributable packages when the application installer or a separate error identifies that runtime as missing. smartsound.dll is not itself identified as a Microsoft Visual C++ runtime file, so reinstalling every runtime is not the default fix.
If the application specifically requests a Visual C++ package:
- Use Microsoft’s official Visual C++ Redistributable documentation.
- Choose the architecture requested by the application.
- Install the package.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the application again.
Do not remove existing older redistributables just to replace them with a newer package. Legacy programs can depend on specific runtime versions.

If the same message remains, return to repairing the parent application instead of repeatedly installing unrelated runtimes.
Fix 5: Run DISM and SFC only for broader Windows corruption
DISM and SFC repair protected Windows components. They are useful when several unrelated applications or Windows features are failing, but they normally do not restore a third-party Quicktracks DLL.
Run DISM first, as Microsoft recommends.
- Open Start.
- Type Command Prompt.
- Right-click it.
- Select Run as administrator.
- Run:
DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth
- Wait for the operation to complete.
- Then run:
sfc /scannow
- Wait until verification reaches 100 percent.
- Restart Windows.
- Test the affected application.
The SFC result may say that Windows Resource Protection found no integrity violations, repaired files, or could not repair some files. None of those results proves that Quicktracks itself was restored.
If you regularly repeat SFC and the same application still reports smartsound.dll, stop treating it as a Windows system-file problem. Repair or reinstall the application instead.

Reinstalling the SmartSound-owning application remains the definitive fix when that program is the source of the error.
Fix 6: Use System Restore after a recent change
System Restore is worth considering when smartsound.dll worked until a cleanup operation, application update, driver installation or other system change.
- Press Windows + R.
- Type:
rstrui.exe
- Press Enter.
- Select Next.
- Choose a restore point from before the error began.
- Select Scan for affected programs if available.
- Review the changes.
- Select Next, then Finish.
- Let Windows restart.
System Restore does not normally remove personal documents, but it can roll back applications, drivers and system settings. Back up important project files first.
How to tell it worked: the original application starts normally after the restore. If it does not, undo the restore if Windows offers that option, then reinstall the application from its original source.

Fix 7: Update drivers only when the symptoms point to a driver problem
A display or audio driver does not normally provide smartsound.dll, so driver updates are not the first repair for this error. Consider them if several multimedia applications fail, video playback is unstable, or the problem began immediately after a graphics or audio driver change.
Update through Device Manager
- Right-click Start.
- Select Device Manager.
- Expand Display adapters for graphics drivers.
- Expand Sound, video and game controllers for audio drivers.
- Right-click the relevant device.
- Select Update driver.
- Choose Search automatically for drivers.
- Restart Windows if prompted.
For a recently updated driver, open the device’s Properties, select the Driver tab and choose Roll Back Driver if that option is available.
Manually checking several vendors and matching legacy driver packages can take time, especially when the application is old. Outbyte Driver Updater can scan for outdated drivers; its free scan identifies issues, while installing drivers requires the full version. It is not a substitute for reinstalling the application that owns smartsound.dll.
How to tell it worked: multimedia playback and the affected application work without new loader, crash or device errors. If only one old editor still fails, return to its Quicktracks installation.

Why you should not download smartsound.dll manually
Random DLL download pages are a poor repair path because the file may be:
- The wrong version for your video editor.
- The wrong architecture.
- Modified or unsigned.
- Bundled with malware.
- Missing companion files.
- Placed in a directory the application does not use.
Copying it into C:WindowsSystem32 or C:WindowsSysWOW64 is especially risky. Those directories are not a universal storage location for third-party application DLLs. The application may need the file in its own installation directory along with matching configuration, COM registration or supporting modules.
A verified backup can sometimes be restored to the original application directory as a temporary recovery measure. Even then, follow up with a proper repair or reinstall. Never overwrite a system directory merely because a popup recommends it.
Use these safe sources instead:
- The original installer for the affected application.
- The application’s built-in update or repair function.
- Installation media you obtained for that application.
- The official SmartSound or application publisher support channel.
- A Microsoft runtime page only when the application specifically identifies that runtime.
Does regsvr32 fix this file?
Usually, no.
The description “SmartSound COM Object” does not automatically mean that the DLL must be registered manually. regsvr32 works only with self-registering COM or ActiveX DLLs that expose a registration entry point such as DllRegisterServer.
Do not run this as a generic fix:
regsvr32 smartsound.dll
If the original product documentation explicitly instructs you to register a known-good file, use the exact path and the registration method specified by that product. A registration attempt may produce an error such as “DllRegisterServer entry point was not found,” which means the DLL is not self-registering in the required way.
Registration cannot repair a missing file, a corrupt binary, a wrong architecture or a missing dependency. The application installer is the correct way to restore those pieces.
When Windows Features and game verification matter
Do not enable random Windows optional features to fix this error. smartsound.dll is not established as a Windows Features component.

This applies only to software distributed through Steam. Other launchers have their own verify or repair commands. Do not copy a global DLL into a game folder unless the launcher or publisher specifically directs you to restore that exact file.
If the DLL exists but the application still fails
Finding smartsound.dll on disk does not prove that it is usable. Check the exact path and the program that reports the error.
Work through these checks:
- Start the application from its normal shortcut.
- Note the full error text.
- Note the application name and version.
- Check whether the DLL is inside that application’s installation folder.
- Review Windows Security Protection history.
- Repair the application anyway.
- Check whether the error affects every Windows user account or only one.
- Create a temporary Windows user profile and test the program there.
If only one profile fails, corrupted per-user settings or media-library data may be involved. Back up the profile’s project data before resetting application settings.
If the application was intentionally removed, the error may come from a stale shortcut, plug-in registration or startup entry. Remove the orphaned startup item if the old program is no longer needed. Reinstall it only when you still need its projects or features.

FAQ
Is smartsound.dll a Windows file?
No. It is associated with SmartSound Quicktracks, a third-party component used by licensed multimedia applications.
Which program installed smartsound.dll?
The filename alone cannot identify the exact host. Older Corel, Ulead, Adobe Premiere, Pinnacle, CyberLink and Roxio products are possible sources.
Should I put the file in System32?
No. Restore it through the application’s original installer and let that installer place it in the correct directory.
Will SFC repair smartsound.dll?
Normally no. SFC repairs protected Windows files, not an application-owned Quicktracks DLL.
Is the error caused by Visual C++ or DirectX?
That is not established as the normal cause. Install a runtime only when the application specifically identifies a missing dependency.
Can I register the DLL with regsvr32?
Usually not. Use registration only when the original product documentation requires it and the DLL supports the required registration entry point.
What should I include when asking for support?
Provide the exact error text, application name and version, DLL path, Windows version, what changed before the failure, and whether antivirus software quarantined the file. Do not attach or download an unverified replacement DLL.
