Three experiments found that people using paper calendars made higher-quality plans and fulfilled them more successfully in the tasks studied. That does not make paper universally better: the studies point to seeing the broader schedule as a likely advantage, while phones offer tools paper cannot provide automatically, such as alerts and syncing.
What the paper-versus-phone studies found
A peer-reviewed study by Yanliu Huang, Zhen Yang and Vicki G. Morwitz examined how paper and mobile calendars affect everyday planning and plan fulfillment. Across three studies, paper-calendar users made higher-quality plans and were more successful at fulfilling them than mobile-calendar users. The authors connect the advantage to taking a broader, big-picture view of the schedule; mobile users’ plan quality improved when they used a mode that provided a broader view. The on-time result—and its limits
In the first experiment, 129 undergraduates used paper or mobile calendars for two weeks. Columbia Business School’s account reports that 53% of paper-calendar users fulfilled plans on time, compared with 33% of mobile-calendar users. Those figures describe that experiment’s participants and tasks—not the share of people who will keep appointments on time in everyday life. Columbia Business School’s study summary.

What participants planned
The tasks went beyond logging appointments. Participants copied planned activities and added a study session and leisure activity; planned a home-improvement project; or scheduled an activity of their choice, such as gardening, cooking, art or knitting. For the third study, participants uploaded photos of completed plans as validation. Baylor’s Keller Center summary reports that paper users fulfilled activities more often in the first study, made higher-quality plans than users of a regular mobile calendar in the second, and completed the activity at a higher rate in the third. Where each format is more useful
| Planning need | Paper planner | Smartphone calendar |
|---|---|---|
| See the week or month while adding tasks | A printed layout can keep surrounding days visible and make it easier to consider how activities fit together. University of Washington student guidance describes planners as supporting big-picture, weekly and daily planning. | Overview depends on the app and display; some phone views show less surrounding schedule at once. |
| Remember one appointment at a set time | Records the appointment, but does not provide a built-in alarm. | Notifications or alarms can prompt you before the event. |
| Manage repeating commitments | Repeating an entry usually means writing it again or marking each occurrence. | Recurring-event features can reduce repeated entry. |
| Coordinate with people or devices | A paper copy is not automatically shared or synced. | Sharing and access across devices can help coordinate schedules, depending on the app and account setup. |
| Write notes with fewer digital distractions | Handwriting and a dedicated planning surface may suit quick notes or focused review. University of Washington describes planners as having little to no distractions. | Opening a phone can also expose you to messages, notifications or browsing. |
| Change plans or access them away from the planner | Edits may require crossing out or erasing; a planner left behind is unavailable. | Entries are easier to update and may be available on multiple devices, subject to the app and account setup. |

How to choose for your own routine
Choose paper for an overview-driven week
A weekly paper planner is a reasonable fit if you regularly map several activities around one another, plan projects with linked steps, or want to review your schedule without opening a phone. Its likely advantage is the overview—not proof that handwriting itself makes people more organized. The experiments found that a broader-view mode improved mobile users’ plan quality too.

Use both only with a clear source of truth
A hybrid approach can pair a digital calendar for shared commitments and alerts with a paper weekly view for arranging tasks around them. This is a practical recommendation based on the formats’ complementary features, not a workflow tested in the experiments. Avoid entering the same appointment in two places without deciding which calendar is authoritative; otherwise, edits can leave you with conflicting versions.

The studies support a limited conclusion: paper calendars helped participants plan and fulfill activities more successfully in the tested tasks. Those tasks included undergraduates, a home-improvement plan and self-chosen activities. They do not establish that paper is better for every person, every obligation or every calendar product; nor do they identify a best planner brand, app or hybrid system. California State University, Fullerton quoted study co-author Jay Yang, an assistant professor of marketing, saying: “It depends on the situation or the type of plans.” CSUF’s discussion of digital and paper calendars.
