Choose a smart washer only if you will use its connected features. Remote cycle controls, status updates, phone alerts and app-based guidance can be worthwhile when they solve a real problem in your laundry routine. If you want simple controls and will rarely open an appliance app, a standard washer is usually the better value.
Do not treat “smart” as a cleaning or efficiency grade. Wi-Fi does not prove that a washer cleans better, lasts longer or costs less to operate. Compare the individual models’ capacity, installation fit, EnergyGuide estimate, ENERGY STAR certification and available efficiency metrics before deciding.

What “smart” means on a washing machine
“Smart” generally describes a washer’s connectivity and software rather than a universal performance tier. A smart-capable model may connect to your home network and a phone app, but the exact functions depend on the model, market and manufacturer.
Common connected functions
- Remote cycle control: Some supported models let you start, pause or manage a cycle from a phone. Remote-start behavior can be restricted by safety settings or a confirmation step, so check the model’s instructions.
- Cycle-status notifications: The app can alert you when a load finishes or needs attention instead of requiring you to check the display.
- Cycle guidance: Some apps recommend settings, provide care information or allow limited customization based on the load.
- Maintenance reminders: A connected washer may report a cleaning reminder, error condition or other service message through the app.
These features are not guaranteed on every model sold as smart. Manufacturer support pages describe functions for supported products, not for every washer in a brand’s range. Verify the exact model number, app, operating-system support and account requirements before purchase.

What a standard washer is
A standard washer is operated primarily from its physical control panel. It can still offer multiple cycles, temperature choices, load sensing and other modern functions; “standard” simply means connectivity is not the defining feature. A standard machine may be the right choice when everyone in the household can see the controls, laundry is done on a predictable schedule, or you prefer an appliance that works without an account or app.

Does a smart washer clean better?
There is no general evidence that adding Wi-Fi improves cleaning. Cleaning depends on the washer’s mechanical design, wash action, drum capacity, cycle options, temperature control, detergent use and how well the load suits the selected program. A connected model can have excellent or mediocre cleaning performance, just as a non-connected model can.
When comparing two washers, start with the functions that affect your laundry: a cycle for the fabrics you wash, a capacity that handles your usual load, controls you understand and an installation fit that does not force the machine into an unsuitable space. Treat app features as a separate convenience decision.

Reliability and lifetime cost are separate questions
Connectivity alone does not establish better reliability or a lower lifetime cost. An app may make a fault easier to notice, but it does not demonstrate that the underlying washer will fail less often. The available guidance also does not establish that smart connectivity reduces total ownership cost. Use the manufacturer’s warranty, service arrangements and model-specific information when those factors matter.
Efficiency: compare certification, not Wi-Fi
ENERGY STAR certification and connectivity answer different questions. ENERGY STAR evaluates the washer’s energy and water performance; it does not award certification because a product has an app. A smart washer can miss certification, and a standard washer can earn it.
| ENERGY STAR figure | Scope and meaning |
|---|---|
| About 20% less energy | ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 20% less energy than regular washers. This is a program comparison, not a smart-versus-standard result. |
| About 30% less water | ENERGY STAR says certified clothes washers use about 30% less water than regular washers. The comparison is based on certification status, not connectivity. |
| 14 gallons per load | ENERGY STAR’s current consumer guidance gives 14 gallons per load for a full-sized certified washer. |
| 20 gallons per load | The same guidance gives 20 gallons per load for a standard machine in that full-sized comparison. |
| About 300 loads per year | ENERGY STAR describes this as the approximate annual laundry volume for an average American family; the page does not state a study year. |
The 14-versus-20-gallon figures should not be read as “smart uses 14 gallons and standard uses 20.” They compare a full-sized ENERGY STAR certified washer with a standard machine. Either connectivity category can contain models on either side of that certification line.
Read the EnergyGuide label
The yellow EnergyGuide label gives an estimated annual energy use and operating cost so you can compare similar products. The estimate is not a promise of your household bill: your utility rates, water-heating method, cycle choices, load size and number of loads will change actual costs.
Use the label when comparing a connected model with a conventional model. Do not substitute the presence of an app for the label’s energy and cost estimates. Compare machines with similar capacities and configurations so the figures are meaningful.

Understand IMEF and IWF
- Integrated Modified Energy Factor (IMEF): A higher IMEF indicates greater energy efficiency.
- Integrated Water Factor (IWF): A lower IWF indicates greater water efficiency.
ENERGY STAR lists these metrics in its Product Finder for models where they apply. They are useful when two washers have similar capacities but different efficiency claims. Keep the comparison within comparable product categories; a metric from a different size class can mislead.
Capacity and installation fit often matter more
A washer that fits your room and your laundry habits can deliver more practical value than one with an app you never open. Measure the available space before comparing features, including the machine’s width, height and depth, the path used to bring it into the room and the clearance needed to open the door or lid. Confirm the location’s required water, drain and electrical connections against the installation guide for the exact model.
Match capacity to your loads
- Small, frequent loads: A very large drum may add cost and occupy space without helping if you rarely wash bulky items.
- Large household loads: More capacity can reduce the number of cycles, provided the machine fits and you can load it without overfilling.
- Bedding and bulky items: Check the manufacturer’s guidance for the items you actually wash. Nominal capacity alone does not guarantee that every comforter or blanket will wash properly.
Compare capacity in the same units and product class. A larger connected washer is not automatically a better buy than a smaller standard one; it may simply be solving a different household need.

Paying for smart capability makes sense when you can name a recurring situation that the connection improves.
You forget loads in the machine
A completion alert can reduce the chance that wet laundry sits unnoticed. This is most useful when the laundry room is distant, shared or outside your normal line of sight.
Your schedule changes during the day
Remote status and management can help when work, school or caregiving makes it difficult to return to the washer at a predictable time. Check whether the model permits the remote action you want; some functions may require an in-person confirmation for safety.
You want guided cycle selection
App-based guidance can be useful if several people use the machine or if you regularly wash unfamiliar fabrics. Treat recommendations as assistance, not as a substitute for reading garment-care labels.
You manage laundry in a difficult location
Notifications can be convenient when the machine is in a basement, detached utility room or another area you do not visit often. The benefit is situational: if you pass the washer frequently, a phone alert may add little.

When a standard washer is the better choice
You prefer controls that work without an app
A standard model keeps the primary operation at the machine. That can simplify use for guests, children who are learning laundry routines or anyone who does not want another account and password.
Your laundry routine is predictable
If you start loads at set times and remain nearby, remote control may not change the outcome. Put the budget toward capacity, a cycle you need or a more favorable EnergyGuide estimate instead.
Your home network or phone is not dependable
Smart features depend on the model’s supported connectivity and software services. If your network is unavailable or the app is not compatible with your phone, the connected portion may deliver no benefit. Verify how the washer operates when the connection is unavailable before buying.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteYou want the simplest ownership experience
A conventional interface avoids app updates, account management and service changes that can affect connected features. That does not make every standard washer more reliable, but it removes one layer of dependence.
How to decide: a model-by-model buying process
- Write down your laundry pattern. Note how many people the washer serves, how often you run loads and whether bulky items are routine. Include the time of day when you most often start and unload cycles.
- Measure the installation location. Record the available width, height and depth, door or lid clearance and the route into the room. Check the exact model’s installation requirements before treating a washer as a fit.
- Set a capacity range. Eliminate models that are too small for your regular loads or unnecessarily large for the available space and household volume.
- Choose the cycles and controls you need. Make a short list of fabrics, soil levels and special items that require specific programs. Confirm that each candidate has those functions on the machine itself.
- Check ENERGY STAR status. Look up each model in the ENERGY STAR Product Finder where applicable. Certification is an efficiency comparison, not a connectivity label.
- Record EnergyGuide estimates. Compare estimated annual energy use and operating cost among similar capacities. Keep the local utility rate and your expected number of loads in mind when interpreting the estimate.
- Compare IMEF and IWF when listed. Prefer a higher IMEF for energy efficiency and a lower IWF for water efficiency, while keeping the product class and capacity comparable.
- Audit the smart functions. For a connected model, list the exact features included: remote management, completion alerts, guidance or customization. Confirm the required app, account, phone compatibility, network support and any safety limitations.
- Compare current local prices. There is no single established smart-feature premium. Compare like-for-like models at the time and place of purchase, including delivery, installation and removal charges where they apply.
- Make the feature-use test. Buy connected capability only if you can name at least one task you expect to perform regularly. If you cannot, choose on capacity, fit, efficiency and needed cycles instead.
A practical scorecard for two finalists
Use a simple scorecard rather than letting an app demo decide the purchase. Give each finalist a pass/fail result for installation fit and required cycles; a model that fails either should be removed. For the remaining machines, record capacity, ENERGY STAR status, EnergyGuide annual energy use and cost, IMEF, IWF and current price.
Then score convenience separately. List the connected action you would use, how often you expect to use it and whether it still works for your household if the app is unavailable. A washer that wins on convenience but loses on fit or efficiency may be the wrong choice; a washer that meets all physical and operating needs without connectivity may be the stronger value.
Common buying mistakes and how to avoid them
Assuming “smart” means more efficient
Fix this by checking ENERGY STAR certification, EnergyGuide figures and the available IMEF and IWF values. Connectivity is not a shortcut to an efficiency conclusion.

- [Product Usage Tips] 1. Don't overload. Overload may cause the motor to turn on overheating protection. 2. Balance the spinner to prevent it from losing balance, hitting the inner walls, stopping work. 3. If the machine doesn’t drain, check that the water hose is not clogged or bent, which may prevent the spinner from working properly. 4. Make sure the drain height is less than 45 inches.
Comparing different capacities as if they were identical
Fix this by comparing similar sizes and configurations first. A larger drum can change both operating estimates and the number of loads your household runs.
Buying a feature you cannot use
Fix this by checking app availability, account requirements, phone compatibility and the network conditions in the installation location before paying for connected capability.
Ignoring the physical installation
Fix this by measuring the opening, clearances and delivery path, then reading the model-specific installation requirements. A washer that cannot be safely installed is not a bargain.

Treating a program-level water figure as a product guarantee
Fix this by keeping the scope attached to the number. ENERGY STAR’s 14-gallon figure applies to a full-sized certified washer in its stated comparison; it is not a promise for every smart model or every load.
Market and model qualifications
The efficiency figures and labeling guidance above are U.S.-oriented. ENERGY STAR availability, product labels, model names, app services and certification systems can differ in other countries. Confirm the information for the market where you will buy and install the washer.
Manufacturer feature descriptions also apply to supported models. A feature listed for one connected washer should not be assumed to exist on another model from the same manufacturer. Check the current product page and support documentation at purchase time because software support, account requirements, prices and availability can change.
The bottom-line decision
Choose a smart washing machine when its specific connected functions—such as completion alerts, remote management or cycle guidance—solve a problem you regularly have and the model also fits your space, capacity needs and efficiency targets. Choose a standard washing machine when you value direct controls, have a predictable routine or would not use the app. In either case, make the final choice from the washer’s own capacity, installation requirements, cycles, EnergyGuide estimate, ENERGY STAR status and available IMEF or IWF values—not from the word “smart” on the box.
