Install the new 4TB SSD, initialize it in Windows if necessary, assign it a stable drive letter, and create a destination library folder. Then move each game through its launcher: Steam and Microsoft Store games have built-in move controls, while Epic Games Launcher requires a backup, a short installation restart, and file verification. Back up saves, mods, screenshots, and settings separately because moving an installation folder does not guarantee that those files move. Keep the old drive untouched until every important game launches and its saves are present.
What you need to decide before moving anything
A 4TB capacity label does not tell you whether a particular SSD fits your computer. Before buying or installing the drive, check the PC or motherboard manual for the supported interface (SATA or NVMe), physical form factor, available slot, mounting hardware, and whether the drive will be installed internally or connected through an enclosure. An enclosure must match both the SSD interface and its physical size.

- Same-PC upgrade: The procedures below assume Windows remains on the existing computer and you are adding storage for installed games.
- Two drives available at once: This is the simplest arrangement because launchers can copy or verify files directly.
- Only one drive bay or slot: You may need a compatible SSD enclosure or another temporary storage location. Confirm SATA/NVMe and form-factor compatibility before copying files.
- Clean Windows installation or a new computer: Treat that as a different migration. Launcher accounts, permissions, cloud saves, and title-specific package systems can require a fresh installation.
Do not choose a drive solely on the 4TB number. The available evidence does not establish a universal SSD speed, loading-time improvement, price, endurance rating, or physical fit for an unspecified PC.

- Install the SSD according to your computer or motherboard manual, or connect it through a compatible enclosure.
- Open Windows Disk Management. If Windows reports that the new disk must be initialized, use the partition style recommended by your system documentation; GPT is the normal choice on current UEFI-based PCs.
- Create a new simple volume, format it with a Windows-compatible file system, and assign a drive letter that is unlikely to be reused. For example, you might choose
G:, but use any available letter that suits your setup. - Create clearly named destination folders, such as
G:SteamLibrary,G:Epic Games, orG:Microsoft Store Games. Separate folders make it easier to select the right path in each launcher. - Restart Windows if the drive or its letter does not appear in a launcher, then confirm that File Explorer can create and delete a test folder on the new volume.
A stable drive letter matters because launchers store installation paths. If Windows later assigns a different letter, a launcher may report games as missing even though the files are intact.

Back up saves and game data separately
Game installations, save files, configuration data, mods, screenshots, and launcher metadata are different things. A launcher’s move command generally targets the installation files; it does not promise to relocate every user-created file.
- Check whether each game supports cloud saves and confirm that the latest save has synchronized before closing the old installation.
- Find local saves and copy them to a separate backup location. Locations vary by title and can include Documents, Saved Games, AppData, or a folder inside the game profile.
- Back up mods, mod-manager profiles, reshade files, custom key bindings, graphics settings, screenshots, and recordings if you need them on the new installation.
- Record which launcher account owns each title and whether a game uses additional authentication or content services.
Microsoft’s Age of Empires support instructions are a useful warning: that game keeps save files, recorded games, and crash reports on the C: drive, where they must remain for in-game access. This is title-specific, not a rule for every game. See Microsoft’s Age of Empires move instructions and verify the equivalent locations for your own titles.
Choose the migration method by launcher
| Launcher or title | Supported procedure | What the procedure does | Redownload behavior |
|---|---|---|---|
| Steam | Add a library folder on the new drive, then use the game’s Properties and Move Install Folder controls. | Steam moves the selected installation into the new library. | The launcher is instructed to move the existing files rather than download the game again. |
| Microsoft Store / Windows Installed Apps | Use Apps & features on Windows 10 or Installed Apps on Windows 11, select the game, choose Move, select the target drive, and confirm. | Windows relocates the installed app to the selected drive. | The documented workflow is a move operation. |
| Epic Games Launcher | Copy the installation folder, uninstall the game, start a new install, cancel after roughly 2–3% begins, replace the destination files with the backup, and resume. | Epic rebuilds the installation entry and verifies the copied files. | Verification should use the copied content; a full download can still occur if the path or files are wrong. |
| Microsoft Flight Simulator | Use the title’s package backup and clean-install procedure, then let its installation manager scan existing files. | Restores the Official and Community packages through the simulator’s own manager. | This is a title-specific restoration process, not a universal launcher move. |
For any launcher not listed, check its current first-party move, locate, import, or verify instructions before editing files manually. Do not assume that changing a folder name, editing manifests, creating junctions, or changing registry entries will be safe.
Move Steam games to the new SSD
Steam’s documented path is suitable when the client recognizes both drives.
- Open Steam and go to Settings, then Downloads.
- Open the Steam library-storage control, add a library folder on the 4TB SSD, and select the destination folder you created.
- In your Steam Library, right-click the game and open Properties.
- Choose the installed-files section and select Move Install Folder (the wording can change between Steam client versions).
- Select the new library on the 4TB SSD and start the move.
- Wait for Steam to finish. Do not close Steam or disconnect the drive during the transfer.
- Launch the game from the new library. Check the title’s save menu, mods, controller settings, and any overlay or add-on that matters to you.
The move control is preferable to dragging a Steam game directory in File Explorer because Steam updates its library metadata at the same time. If the move option is absent, confirm that the game is installed, the destination is registered as a Steam library, and the client has finished any pending update.

Move Microsoft Store games with Windows’ Move control
Microsoft’s Age of Empires support guide, updated January 16, 2026, gives separate search paths for Windows versions:
- On Windows 10, search for Apps & features. On Windows 11, search for Installed Apps.
- Find the game in the installed-app list and open its menu.
- Select Move, choose the new SSD, and confirm the move.
- Wait for Windows to complete the operation before opening the Xbox or Microsoft Store app again.
- Start the game and verify saves, add-ons, and sign-in status.
Not every Microsoft Store package exposes the same controls. If Move is missing or disabled, do not delete the old folder or attempt to relocate protected app files by hand. Check the game publisher’s current support instructions and preserve the original installation until you have a confirmed recovery path.
Move Epic Games Launcher titles without a full redownload
Epic’s official process is not a simple drag-and-drop move. It temporarily removes the launcher’s installation record, starts a new install so Epic creates the destination metadata, and then verifies the files you copied.
- Close the game and make a complete copy of its current installation folder to a temporary safe location. Use a different disk or another location that will remain available while the launcher is reset.
- Open Epic Games Launcher, find the game in Library, and uninstall it from the launcher. Keep the backup copy.
- Start installing the same game again and select the 4TB SSD as the destination. If you want future Epic installs to default there, use Download Manager > Download Settings > General > Change, as described in Epic’s default-installation-path instructions.
- Allow the new installation to begin. Epic’s support procedure says to wait until roughly 2–3% has downloaded, then cancel the installation.
- Copy the backed-up game folder into the new destination folder. If Windows asks whether to replace duplicate files, choose the replacement option so the backup supplies the existing content.
- Resume the installation in Epic Games Launcher. Epic should scan and verify the files rather than downloading the entire game.
- When verification completes, launch the game and test its saves, settings, mods, and online sign-in.
Follow the folder names Epic displays for the new install; do not assume that a similarly named directory is the correct one. If Epic starts a full download instead of verifying, pause it and check that the copied folder is nested at the exact destination Epic selected. Consult Epic’s move-an-installed-game procedure before deleting anything.
Handle other launchers and individual games cautiously
Different launchers use different manifests, permissions, package stores, and patch systems. A procedure that works in Steam or Epic may leave another client unable to find its files. Before touching an unlisted title:

- Use the launcher’s repair or file-verification option after relocating files.
- Keep a complete backup until the client recognizes the game and a test launch succeeds.
Avoid universal advice to edit manifests, registry entries, or junction links. Those techniques can break updates, anti-cheat checks, permissions, or uninstall records when the launcher does not officially support them.

Microsoft Flight Simulator’s support guidance is written for moving to a new PC, so treat it as a title-specific exception rather than a general recipe. The support page, updated May 1, 2024, tells users to sign in with their Microsoft or Steam account and download the game rather than blindly copying an old installation. It warns that stale files can cause loading problems.
- Back up the simulator’s
OfficialandCommunityfolders. - Create the desired package folder on the 4TB SSD.
- Perform a clean app installation and select that package path.
- Allow the installation manager to scan existing files.
- Restore or reintroduce Community content carefully, testing the simulator before adding large groups of packages.

Verification is the step that prevents a convenient copy from becoming a lost library.
- Open the launcher and confirm that the game’s installation path points to the 4TB SSD.
- Run the launcher’s file verification or repair command when it provides one.
- Start the game and reach its main menu, then load a recent save.
- Check that cloud saves have synchronized and local saves, profiles, mods, screenshots, and custom settings are present.
- Test an update or a small piece of downloadable content if the title depends on a separate content manager.
- Close the game normally and reopen it once more from the launcher.
Only after these checks should you consider deleting the old installation. Keep the original files long enough to recover a title whose launcher still reports missing content.

Troubleshoot the common failure modes
The launcher wants to download the entire game
Pause the download. Confirm that the drive letter has not changed, that the destination folder is the exact one registered with the launcher, and that the copied files are in the expected folder level rather than one directory too deep. For Epic, repeat the documented 2–3% start-and-cancel sequence and resume verification; do not improvise by deleting the backup.
The game launches but saves are missing
Check cloud-save status and restore the separately backed-up local save folder. A successful installation move does not prove that user data moved, and some games intentionally keep saves on C: or in a profile directory.
The new SSD is not visible
Return to Disk Management, confirm that the disk is initialized and has a volume and drive letter, and check the physical connection or enclosure. If the drive is absent from firmware or Windows, follow the hardware manufacturer’s installation guidance rather than formatting the source drive.
Updates or mods fail after the move
Run the launcher’s verify or repair command, then check that your mod manager still points to the new installation path. Reinstall only the affected mod after preserving its profile and load order.
Performance seems worse
The Age of Empires support article specifically warns that moving a game off the C: drive may cause performance issues and suggests moving it back if a negative effect appears. This is a title-specific support caveat, not a general SSD benchmark. If the problem appears, compare the game on its original path, check the drive connection and power settings, and use the publisher’s support channel.
Organize the new 4TB library for future moves
- Use one obvious top-level folder per launcher instead of scattering game files across the root of the SSD.
- Keep the drive letter fixed and document it somewhere outside the drive.
- Maintain a separate backup location for saves and mod profiles; do not rely on the game installation as your only copy.
- When a launcher offers a default-install directory, set it to the appropriate folder only after confirming the drive is healthy and writable.
- Leave the old drive intact until the games you care about have passed launch and save tests.
This approach lets you mix built-in moves, verification-based restores, and title-specific procedures without assuming that one method fits every game.
