What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Yes, but usually not by installing an app directly on the television. Most smart TVs lack a built-in VPN client, and support depends on the TV platform, model, and VPN provider. If your TV cannot run a compatible app, you can route its traffic through a VPN-capable router, share a protected connection from a Windows PC, or use a supported streaming device. These options change how the TV connects to the internet; they do not guarantee better streaming, complete privacy, or access to any particular service.
What a VPN can—and cannot—change on a smart TV
A VPN routes internet traffic through a provider’s VPN endpoint. That can change the network location a service sees, depending on the endpoint and the service’s own checks. It does not automatically prevent all smart-TV tracking, improve connection speed, or make every streaming service available. Streaming platforms may restrict VPN traffic or apply their own location and account rules.

The practical question is whether you can run a VPN on your TV’s operating system or route the TV through another device that can. Provider setup pages describe supported device categories, not guaranteed compatibility with every model, region, or streaming service. Check the exact TV model and regional app store before choosing a method.
Compare the five ways to connect a smart TV through a VPN
| Method | Best fit | What it protects and what to consider |
|---|---|---|
| VPN app on the TV | A TV or streaming platform with a compatible provider app | Usually the simplest setup where available; app support varies by provider and model. |
| VPN on a router | A TV without an app, or a household seeking VPN routing at network level | Can route traffic from devices on the configured network. Requires a compatible router and setup; may affect speed. |
| Windows shared connection | Someone with a Windows PC who wants to route selected devices | Requires the PC and connection sharing to be set up and active. |
| External streaming device | A TV that has an HDMI input but no compatible VPN app | Can run an app on the attached device if supported; applies to that device rather than the TV’s other built-in apps. |
| Smart DNS or DNS workaround | A narrow case where the TV supports DNS settings and the method suits the goal | DNS routing is not the same as a VPN tunnel and does not provide the same encryption or privacy characteristics. |
1. Install a VPN app on the TV if its platform supports one
Most smart TVs do not include a general-purpose VPN client. Android-based TV platforms are a notable exception, and provider documentation lists apps for selected Android TV, Fire TV, and Apple TV devices. Availability is provider- and device-specific: a TV running a related operating system is not necessarily supported.

- 𝐁𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐃𝐞𝐯𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐦𝐩𝐚𝐭𝐢𝐛𝐢𝐥𝐢𝐭𝐲- Supports Nintendo Switch, PCs, laptops, Ultrabooks, tablets, and other USB-powered web devices; works with network equipment including modems, routers, and switches.
Open the TV’s app store and search for the provider’s official app. Confirm that the listing is available in your region and identifies your TV platform. If there is no supported app, do not assume that sideloading an app will work reliably or securely; use a supported network or streaming-device route instead.
2. Route the TV through a VPN-capable router
A router configured as a VPN client can carry the traffic of devices connected to it, including a smart TV. Depending on the configuration, it may route all network traffic or only selected devices. This can be useful when the TV itself cannot run a VPN app, but router support must match the provider’s specific connection method.

- Check the router manufacturer’s documentation for VPN-client support and the relevant protocol or configuration method.
- Confirm that the router still receives security updates. Some older router models may no longer be supported.
- Check whether the setup routes only the TV or other devices on the network as well.
- Expect configuration to take more effort than installing a TV app; routing through a VPN can also affect connection speed.
Do not choose a router based only on a generic claim that it “supports VPN.” Verify compatibility with the provider’s current setup instructions and the router’s firmware and security-update status.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3. Share a VPN-protected connection from Windows
A Windows computer can share a VPN-protected connection with selected devices, but the computer must be configured for connection sharing and remain part of the setup. The precise steps depend on the Windows version, network adapters, and VPN software; the cited setup guidance establishes this as an option but does not provide one universal procedure for every PC.

- Connects a USB 3.0 device (computer/laptop) to a router, modem, or network switch to deliver Gigabit Ethernet to your network connection. Does not support Smart TV or gaming consoles (e.g.Nintendo Switch).
- Supported features include Wake-on-LAN function, Green Ethernet & IEEE 802.3az-2010 (Energy Efficient Ethernet)
- Supports IPv4/IPv6 pack Checksum Offload Engine (COE) to reduce Cental Processing Unit (CPU) loading
- Compatible with Windows 8.1 or higher, Mac OS
Use the VPN provider’s current Windows connection-sharing instructions and verify that the TV is connected through the shared, protected connection before relying on it. If the PC is disconnected or the sharing configuration changes, the TV may no longer be using that route.
4. Use an external streaming device with a VPN app
If the television’s own platform lacks a compatible app, an external streaming device can offer an app-based alternative. The device must support the VPN provider’s app, and you use that device’s streaming apps rather than the TV’s built-in apps for the VPN route to apply. This adds hardware and covers the attached streaming device, not other devices or the TV’s separate built-in services.

Check the exact device model, regional app store, and provider compatibility before buying. Documentation for selected Fire TV, Android TV, and Apple TV devices does not mean every generation or region supports every VPN app.
5. Treat Smart DNS as a different kind of workaround
Some TVs allow users to change DNS settings, and some providers offer Smart DNS or related DNS-based workarounds. These can change how certain network requests are resolved, but DNS-only routing is not a full VPN connection. In particular, do not treat it as equivalent to a VPN tunnel’s encrypted traffic or privacy properties. Choose it only if its narrower behavior matches your goal.

Check compatibility before you set anything up
- Identify the exact device. Record the TV model, operating system, and region, or the model and generation of any external streaming device.
- Check the official app store. Look for the provider’s official app on that device and confirm regional availability.
- For router use, verify the exact method. Match the router’s VPN-client support to the provider’s instructions, and check that the router receives security updates.
- Decide which traffic should use the VPN. A TV app generally applies to that device; a router setup may route other network devices too. A streaming-device app applies to that device rather than the TV’s built-in apps.
- Set a realistic goal. A changed apparent network location is possible, but privacy effects and streaming access vary. Check the streaming service’s terms and do not assume a VPN will bypass its restrictions.
What the setup guides establish
NordVPN’s smart-TV guide describes the lack of built-in VPN functionality on most smart TVs and outlines device-specific options: NordVPN smart-TV VPN guide. ExpressVPN maintains separate setup instructions for Samsung and LG smart TVs, Roku, Chromecast with Google TV, Android TV, Apple TV, and Fire TV, underscoring that instructions differ by platform: ExpressVPN setup directory.
Windscribe’s August 25, 2026 guide distinguishes DNS-only use from full VPN encryption and lists supported platforms and workarounds: Windscribe smart-TV guide. For Roku specifically, ExpressVPN’s guide, last updated September 17, 2026, says Roku does not natively support its VPN app and requires a VPN-protected network; it also cautions that some router support has ended security updates: ExpressVPN Roku setup guide. These are provider instructions, not proof that every model, region, or streaming service will work.
