Yes—VGA and HDMI can work together when a converter translates the signal in the correct direction. VGA carries analog video, while HDMI carries digital video, so a simple cable usually cannot bridge them by itself. Identify which device sends the picture and which receives it, then choose a converter labeled for that exact path.
Choose the converter by signal direction
Read the connection from the video source to the display. The adapter’s input must match the source, and its output must match the display. Connector shape alone does not tell you whether a product converts in the direction you need.

These are separate conversion paths, not two names for the same cable. Dell says most video adapters are not bidirectional, so check the product’s stated input and output before buying. Dell’s video display guidance explains the distinction.

Why a converter is needed
VGA sends an analog video signal; HDMI sends digital video. Crossing between them requires electronics that convert the signal. Dell distinguishes an active adapter, which has a chip to perform conversion, from a passive adapter, which does not. Its guidance specifies active conversion for the VGA-to-HDMI pairing, and notes that analog-to-digital conversion is not guaranteed to work in every setup.

When both devices offer the same type of connection, a direct cable is generally the simpler choice. Dell recommends a direct video connection for performance and compatibility where possible. See Dell’s guidance on video connections.

Check power, resolution, refresh rate, and audio
- Power: Some converters need a separate USB or other power connection. Dell’s C2G VGA-to-HDMI listing describes an integrated USB power cable; check the exact model’s requirements rather than assuming every adapter is powered the same way. Product listing.
- Resolution and refresh rate: Confirm that the source, converter, and display all support the mode you want. Dell’s listing specifies up to 1080p at 60 Hz for that particular C2G model; this is not a universal limit or guarantee for other converters and device combinations. Product specifications.
- Audio: VGA does not carry sound. A VGA-only connection will not send audio to a display’s speakers; use a separate audio connection or a converter with an explicitly supported audio input or output path. Dell’s VGA connection guidance.
- Device compatibility: Check the computer’s video output, the display’s input, and both devices’ supported modes. A converter’s direction and stated capabilities need to match the whole setup.
Before you buy or connect
- Identify the source device and the display. The source sends video; the display receives it.
- Check the available video port on each device: HDMI or VGA.
- Choose a converter explicitly labeled for that direction, such as HDMI-to-VGA or VGA-to-HDMI.
- Read the converter’s power requirements and connect any required USB or other power lead.
- Verify supported resolution and refresh rate for the source, converter, and display.
- If sound is needed, confirm how audio will travel; VGA alone cannot carry it.
- Consult the device manuals or compatibility notes if the display remains blank or the desired mode is unavailable.
If the picture does not appear
- Nothing displays: Recheck the direction label and make sure the converter is between the source and display in the intended order. Confirm any required power connection.
- The display reports an unsupported mode: Select a resolution and refresh rate supported by all three components: source, converter, and display.
- Video works but there is no sound: That is expected over VGA alone. Use a separate audio path or a converter with audio support.
- The setup still fails: Active conversion does not guarantee compatibility in every configuration. Check the exact models’ manuals and supported connections; where possible, use a direct connection of the same signal type.
