There is no single privacy switch: controls vary by brand and model, and an ACR opt-out does not necessarily stop all data collection. “Spying” is a common way to describe this tracking; it is not, by itself, evidence that someone is watching a live feed.
What smart TV tracking can collect
Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) identifies content displayed on a TV. Depending on how a system is implemented, it may recognize programming from built-in apps as well as external inputs, such as a set-top box or game console. Viewing data can be used for recommendations, audience measurement, or advertising.

In a documented historical case, the Federal Trade Commission said VIZIO TVs captured second-by-second information about viewed content, including material from cable, broadband, set-top boxes, DVDs, over-the-air broadcasts, and streaming devices. The FTC’s February 2017 announcement concerned 11 million televisions; it is not a count of TVs currently tracking viewers, nor proof that every brand or model collects the same data. The FTC said the resulting order required prominent disclosure and affirmative express consent for specified data collection and sharing practices. Read the FTC’s VIZIO announcement.

Turn off viewing-data collection on the TV
Start with the TV’s current Privacy, Terms, or User Agreements area. Menu names and availability vary by model, software version, region, and account state. Search on-screen settings for terms such as “ACR,” “Viewing Data,” “Viewing Information Services,” “Smart TV Experience,” or “Viewing History,” and read the privacy notice shown for your device.
Samsung
Samsung says owners can opt out of ACR and viewing-history collection. Its support guidance points to the Viewing Information Services Privacy Notice and Smart Hub Privacy Notice in the TV’s Settings menu; it does not establish one menu path for every model. See Samsung’s privacy guidance.

Fire TV documents a separate control for third-party app usage data: Settings > Preferences > Privacy Settings > Collect App Usage Data. Certain Fire TV smart TVs also have a separate over-the-air viewing-data opt-out in Privacy Settings. Check both categories if they appear on your device. See Amazon’s Fire TV privacy guidance.

- Ad personalization: Turn off interest-based or personalized ads, or limit/reset the advertising ID if the platform offers that option. This generally changes personalization, not whether ads appear. The Network Advertising Initiative’s guide covers advertising-ID controls for several TV and streaming platforms. See the NAI connected-TV guide. The FTC likewise notes that opting out of personalized advertising does not necessarily remove ads. Read the FTC’s consumer guidance.
- App usage: Look for separate controls governing which apps you use or how long you use them. Fire TV, for example, documents an app-usage control distinct from its over-the-air viewing-data setting.
- Voice features: Review voice-assistant settings and permissions separately, especially if you use a remote with a microphone or a built-in assistant. Controls differ, and the available evidence does not establish one model-wide voice setting for every major TV brand.
- Basic platform and app data: Disabling ACR does not necessarily stop other data handling covered by the platform’s or an app’s privacy policy. The FTC-hosted study discusses categories beyond ACR, including app choices and location; check the applicable notices and permissions.
Choose how much functionality to trade for privacy
| Option | Privacy coverage | Convenience and setup | Possible downside |
|---|---|---|---|
| Change TV privacy settings | Opt-outs apply to the specific categories named by each control; they are not a universal block. | Usually low effort and retains most connected services. | Controls differ by platform, and other data practices may remain. |
| Change settings on streaming devices too | Addresses controls on the separate stick, box, or other device rather than the TV alone. | Requires checking each device separately. | One device’s opt-out does not change another device’s settings. |
| Use a network-level DNS filter | Adds a network filtering layer for domains covered by the filter’s lists. | More configuration; a Raspberry Pi running Pi-hole is one possible setup. | Filtering is imperfect and can disrupt unrelated connected features. Consumer Reports describes the Pi-hole approach. |
| Disconnect the TV from the internet | Stops that TV’s internet communications while it is disconnected. | Simple if online TV features are not needed. | Streaming apps and other connected services on the TV will stop working. Separate devices and services can still collect their own data. |
A practical order for checking settings
- Identify the TV’s brand, model, and platform. Open its current Privacy, Terms, or User Agreements area so you are changing controls for the device you actually own.
- Disable viewing recognition or history controls. Look for ACR, Viewing Data, Viewing Information Services, Smart TV Experience, or similar wording.
- Turn off ad personalization or limit the ad ID. Expect ads to remain; the setting is about personalization, not necessarily ad delivery.
- Review apps and voice features separately. Repeat the review on every attached streaming stick or box, because its settings are independent of the TV’s.
- Decide whether the TV needs internet access. Disconnecting it removes its online functions as well as its internet connection.
- Consider DNS filtering only if you are comfortable managing your network. A Pi-hole setup can block some domains, but it is not a guarantee that all collection stops and may break useful features.
